Dunno, but it looks like Eli got another one! Technically, it's only the left wheels that are bogged!

This is at Fraser Island.
That is usually caused by people driving to close to running creeks on sand. If you see a creek like that on sand you will find that the water is actually running under the sand as well about 3 to 5 metres either side of the creek.

So if you drive that close to the creek the weight of the 4wd actually puts presure on the area of sand where the 4wd is and the water underneath takes the sand away causing the 4wd to sink very very quickly.

Another thing that causes this is the tide coming up. The tide is coming under the sand as well as above which causes exaclly the same problem as above.

An example of this is if you sand at the waters edge while a little wave comes in when it goes out you will feel your feet sink a couple of inches. The above picture is the same thing just on a much bigger scale. ;)

Here a pic of a simillar thing that happens all the time on Bemont/ Blacksmiths beach near Newcastle. I managed to pull him out before it sunk like the one above but another 2 hours and it would have been the same. :P

http://warrenl.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/Miscellaneous-4X4-photos/000_0280.jpg

Hope this all makes sense. :D

Cheers Mick.

Tip to avoid this happening to you:

Drive diagonally down stream to cross these fresh water creek crossings. The reason for this is that if you get bogged, the sand accumulates behind your back wheels, rather than over your hubs. This means you will sink more slowly, and it will be easier for someone to pull you out quickly. Also, the water flowing in the same direction you are trying to snatch out will also help, rather than hinder your efforts as it does if it is flowing against the side of the car.

Also, make sure you have your recovery equipment handy, and you know exactly where it is (not at the back under boxes and bags) As Mick69 Pointed out, these things sink real quick in these situations, and wet sand creates a vacuum under the vehicle, so every minute that passes, it is more difficult to pull out.

I have two questions.

1. What fluids ... oil, coolant, dirty water & the like would be left in the drink after the vehicle is removed?

2. And should he be fined a few grand to assist with the cleanup?

Reddo
10-10-2006, 02:41 PM
Tough units those D11's. Why not just drive it off the quarry face?

A neigbour drives one in Tassie and some jokers stole it one day, drove it over a small quarry face and not satisfied with this, they turned it into the quarry face at full noise and there it stayed for over a day, grinding away. Did over 30K's worth of damage to the motor, tracks and final drives though.

In short we went up the beach that arvo at low tide no worries. Coming back down the beach the next day that pic best describes what we found. He had tried driving up the beach at night, around high tide, n was unsuccessful.

It was just north of Eli creek too.

Nope it is real they are not low profile or large hub caps, the photo is taken from a couple of levels up and the truck is in about 25mtrs of water.
It is a cat 793, carries around 270 tonnes of ore, the bloke who drove it died and was found 5 days later. The blue thing is a 20 ltr bottle to mark where the truck was, as when it went over it was loaded and it took around 3 weeks for the water to clear up.Police divers could not even see the truck let alone find him.
As someone else said the size of the rocks compared to the truck don't look right, well they are bloody big rocks, most are about the length of a cruiser.
Yes the above facts are correct as i was working there at the time and was part of the investigation as to what happened. It was all caught on video from the dispatch centers camera.

Cops told me I could be liable for all damage if I pulled it out. Their only suggestion was to get the rego papers signed over first. After a dozen or more calls I couldn't find the owner. Called the cops back and they said if I did find him and get it signed over, that I could be liable for the enviroment damage caused by the car as they had been in contact with the EPA.

Yep, it was hard to watch it break up and slowly get stripped. I think it was about 5 days till the council got down there with a backhoe. By this time waves had smashed the glass and it was totally stripped. What gets on my nerves is the fact that with the threat of fines, the EPA virtually stopped me from getting it out and it was spilling oil and fuel into the sea. It Pi%%es me off to think about it, probably sitting in some council holding yard rusting away. I had a team of blokes ready to strip it and wash everything down had I been able to get permission to recover it without all the threats.

I live in bunbury western australia and at the wharf there they bilt a big oil rig or some sort of platform. when the y dug the wall out to let sea water in and float it they had two dosers at each side and slowly dug it away, but not thinking to brightly they left the dozers near the were they where digging and the next morning they were both at the bottom of the harbour.
Apparantly there still there to this day and was going to millions to retrieve harbour was deep enough so they left them their.
not sur what type they were but some from piacintinis earthmoving in wa will defiantly know.

Trucks aren't meant to fly, therefore they don't land very well.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k76/rob1958/MVC-007S.jpg

Those wheels don't look right. Trucks like that don't run low profile tyres, nor have I ever seen large "hub caps" covering the tyres.

I reckon it's a toy.

the hucap looking item in the rear tyre is a planetary gear drive.

give heaps of reduction to save having somthin like a 3000-1 diff ratio:)

they are also a split type rim like standard cruiser utes come with.

VERY dangerous to change, if the band blows off when you are pumping up the tyre--game over for you

I have two questions.

1. What fluids ... oil, coolant, dirty water & the like would be left in the drink after the vehicle is removed?

2. And should he be fined a few grand to assist with the cleanup?

How long have you been hugging trees?
If i'd just had that happen to my car and some tree hugging faggot came up and said that to me i'd knock his block off. I really hope you are joking!

well it is a valid point of cleaning up the oil etc whether intentional or not, that is part of the reason we pay a fee to use the island etc. they should have a vehicle capable of fast retrievable for getting cars out before to much damage to the car and the environment.

This is at Fraser Island.

someone cut a surf in half and sat it on the beach!

saw a rangie on it's side washing in and out with the waves at the mouth of eli many years ago apparently he was driving up and down the creek trying to wash his car.

another funny or scary thing I have seen was a big line of cars going through a smaller creek, all taking the same line very shallow when about the tenth car just nose dived into the creek and sank. all the cars had turned the sand into quicksand and he was just the unlucky one.

From what i've been told most of the drivers of those big trucks are females. There was even a documentry on Discovery channel about it.

They said women look after the trucks better the guys do that why they employ them as drivers over males. After seeing that i'm begining to wonder.:D

Cheers Mick.
women can manage time better than blokes, they can do the same trip 20 times in a night and all at a similar time, blokes just put the foot down and go like the clappers...

talk to the guys at myth busters. I'm sure if they filled it with enough ping pong balls it would float to the surface> ha ha ha he he

"Note to self; Bigger snorkle."
Some insane pictures fellas..

Seriously though.. what was the cause of the big Tonka Truck going into that puddle ? :P

And did they ever pull it out.. that's a hell of alot of machinery to leave down there..
My old man is an earth moving operator, and I done my apprenticeship in a central Qld coal mine. Seen similar things a few times. I can tell you some people are lucky, but the bloke in this pic wasn't so lucky.

It would have been recovered and examined. A big and expensive job! Especially as that part of the pit would have been closed off during that time meaning millions of lost dollars in terms of productivity.

I can't prove it to you but I know it happened on Fraser because the Surf belonged to some friends of ours. It was their first time on the beach and Aussie girl and her Pommie husband who had never been 4wding before. I do actually have the original photo lying around at home somewhere.

stolen and trashed... man that is so sad that people do this type of shit when we spend so much time and effort as well $$$ getting our cars to do what we want them to do.

I have photos of this as well took them in september 2 years ago. They have photos of the event in the pub and it showed that it only happened about four weeks before hand. Its amazing what sea, salt and air can do in a short period of time.

That is great. I remember a few years back(probably 10 or more) I was on Fraser as a youngster and we saw a couple of small lumps on the ground. Went for a closer inspection and found they were spark plugs. Then found what appeared to be the remnants of a head and block. I guess someone walked home that time...
