My club's running an A-Grade trip next month and I need info on what tracks are worth doing at the moment. The harder the better. We'll want to drive both the Sat and Sunday without re-doing the same tracks. Anyone know what the tracks around Big River are like at the mo.
Thanx in advance.
John.

Sorry mate i know that big river is almost impassable(bloody hard) in winter because of the high rivers and snow dumps! ;D ;D ;D 8) It would probably be a tad dry up there now but thats like most places at the moment! If there is a bit of rain up there before you go it should make it interesting. ::) Sorry i couldn't be any more help cos i havn't been up there for a while!

Check out the 4WD Trips close to Melbourne book. I know these are not the hardest trips, but the areas would be great to explore. THey never take any of the side tracks, which is where the real fun is.

You can't go past Toolangi and Tallarook, especially steep trk and Phone trk in Tallarook
Go for a weekend woods point, brewery track, old fiddlers green track or old coach rd, Then hit the summit of Skene, down Barkly river jeep track, down to Mt Mkinty, over Mt sunday, turn right, down to Barkly river, [can camp here or on another few hrs to start of butcher]turn left into nobs track, follow that onto blue plain spur, turn left into butcher country [2/camp sat night by river] hit the howitt rd, turn right, and go back to king billy, down past lovicks, and bluff hut, 16 mile jeep track, past pikes. binderee, onto circuit road and head home.
That will be a weekend you wont forget in a hurry, with bit of everything.

It runs off the main st of Woods Point baout 200m toward Jamo on the right from the Woods Point store, you cross the bridge on the birumen over the creek, follow the creek into the hill on your right, crossing a little tributary stream, and drive in about 100m, and the track goes up on your right as you get to where you cant get any further.
The publicans Don and Anne or the shopkeeper will tell you how to find it, it is on the maps but shown as not coming into woods point, and it takes you up toward Champion spur.

any recomendations for the 2 camping areas (scott reserve, comet flat) at woods point ?
will be there on good friday thru to easter monday.
also sugestions would be great for slightly easier tracks if the patrol im going with cant hack the hard stuff!!!

Most tracks around woods point are easier, try most heading toward Mt Skene, and also back toward stockmans reward, big river, like gafneys creek track, Corn hill, Frenchmans etc.
Comets flat and down past the gun club might be busy, especially as 2wd territory, you could try the woods point hilton hut, through comets flat toward johnson hill track, and instead of following the main track hard right at the hut, turn left behind the hut, cross the river again and look for a camp on that dead end track where most people never look.
If you follow the track right in you will come to where an old town and gold mines used to be, you can also get to this by heading up johnson hill track, turning hard left back down the first spur to your left, you will see the track, and this will follow the ridge all the way down to the river too.
You may find a quite spot in comets after the main area too, if you follow the track which crosses the creek 13 odd times coming out near the biiiig tree down, where it comes back onto the main track just before you get to the woods point hilton hut.

Ok the trip has been and gone and what a fantasic weekend we had. We started from Frenchmans Creek camping ground, onto Frenchmans Ck Tk, up Short Cut No.1 (big ruts), down Short Cut No.2 (rocky, ledgy, ruts, lots of fun!), up Camp Tk, down Boundry Tk (great Tk) back up Boundry as Frenmans Ck Tk is over grown to Two Mile Tk. Across to Matlock where we went down Tinger Spur Tk (not bad, rocky section closed off ???, nice rut towards bottom) into Woods Point for ice cream. Over to Commet Flat (no grass very dusty, been reduction burning) back out to Scott Reserve north of Woods Point (nice big, toilets and some grass).
Big night that one.
Sunday up Brewery Tk (steep & very loose, closed off at top by tree cut down) removed the tree across Clarke Spur onto Abbot Link and onto Abbot CK Tk (awsome Tk, very steep, rocky, BIG ledges and loose) all made it up. Bit further on the same Tk had some troubles with section near end. Went up on two wheels, Steve bounced across 1-2 meters & bent lower control arm, Phill broke engine mount, fan broke cowling, earth strap ripped off. From here some went home while others had a swim in the Thompson River on Low Saddle Tk. Great trip had by all.

For a quick fix, Toolangie - North via the Melba, driver to the edge of the forest and enter (right) at the powerlines and follow the track back south parralell to the Melba. Some good play areas here. Follow this to Marginal Road, out onto the hwy and back in 50m down, (unless theres a road through now?) up rocky track, go right at the top, Vic Range Road, look out on your left and get onto Vic Range Track :o, follow to downies spur, then up sams hut track and onto blowhard range track ;D, is always a fun run ;D.
You can drive around and do it backwards as well.
