Ordered another set of M/T Radial Claws today. After several sets of MT/R's, Rad. Claws, STT's, et al. I think I like the M/T best. Will stick with 305/70R16's though until I get some lower diffs.

IMO the Claws, then Swampers, then Simex Extreme Trek 2.

I'm running 34 inch LTB swampers on my new zook they were the perfect size and the right price.

personally, i love the Simex extreme trekkers, i reckon theyve got the most agressive tread patterns. But i really dont like swampers, i just think theyre not all that attractive! and everybody seems to be getting them these days, WHATS THIS OBSESSION WITH SWAMPERS!!!

Perfect for what? Daily driving, touring, gentle 4 wheeling, mud, rockcrawling? need to be a bit more specific.
What do you mean by fit most peoples trucks. Any tyre will fit most peoples trucks it all comes down to what you have to do to make it fit. I have 34" Swampers on my Zuk with minimal lift and heavy guard cutting. But they wouldn't fit on some peoples cars because they wouldn't cut or use rear springs in the front to make firewall clearance. Again a little more info would be good
The swampers are available in a wider range of sizes and the rubber is softer than the Simexes. Also the different tread patterns available allow them to be suited to a range of terrains.

Got to go the Boggers, they are nuts, pitty about the price.
Same with the extreme trekkers, jungle trekkers, swampers, claws, mudzilla, etc.
Gotta love it when you are on the freeway and you hear the roar of some big tyres on their way to the bush. ;D ;D

I'm looking for some pretty nasty rubber for my MQ shorty, the only problem is it's a 2.8L petrol so it doesn't have a great deal of grunt. but i do have some lower ratio diff centres to drop in it. mainly for winch racing and rock hopping. i think 35" will bog it down to much even with the lower ratios centres. it's a pitty extreme trekkers don't come in 33". but jungle trekkers do so they might get the nod.
the claw is not a very nice tyre to use here in Vic, the directional pattern causes all sorts of issues when trying to stop, reverse etc when wet, slippery, loose, or snow.
36x13/16 swampers have been the best all round tyre I have used, big open tread [biggest tread openings of the swamper range] on 10" rims they drove well on the road, werent as noisy as some other makes and models, and worked very well in the bush. They also wore well.
boggers tend to dislike side slopes, and need to be on the power to make them grip.
Motorways are standard sidewalls of what ever tyre they remoulded.....
JT2's are a bar tread with grooves, and need to be driven like one, and will almost give you a migrain on the road with the noise.
cenepede's work well, but again, directional.

why not .nobody says you have to have a rig worth $50000 + and big rubber to have fun. thats why they have different classes . no point putting big tyres on something that doesn't have the power to turn them.

Dont forget that you air down when you go offroad so a 35 inch claw with is somewhere in the 34's on actually measure ment airs down to somwehere in the hight 33 inch range.
If you buy 33's you'll be forever wishing you got 35's.
FYI my 34X10.5 LTB's measure 33.5 as opposed to the 34X9.5 swamper which is about an inch smaller.
Would anyone dissagree that the bfg m/t is "The Ultimate Tyre", it's not for everyone but its generally what most start out on and it serves most ppl well. I reckon that would have to make it "The Ultimate Tyre" ???

Yes, I disagree!
I havent ever ran them but they seem a bloody popular tyre, not sayin that they are a hard core tyre just that they may go down as the ultimate/best serving tyre. Good mileage and fairly good performance=ultimate tyre ;)
I gave up on BF's after destroying many, cut sidewalls, cut tread area, relented when I got the troopy, and got the dealer to fit 100 gxl rims and 255 BF muds, and destroyed one first trip out, so sold them.
They dont clean as wella s some other mud tyres, either.
I do love my hancook dynamic m/t's tho, nice open tread, softer compound rubber, cheaper than bfg. Don't get as many k's but good for me.

4 me the Ult tyres is the biggest tyre I can afford (read: wont so much affecting cost wise in the future, such as CV, shaft & others), very good offroad and most important thing....onroad legal. Coz I dont like the idea towing my off road behind no matter how offroad macho they might be :D
at the moment, my vote goes to the new simex ext trekker 2 centipedes 36x13.5. The one with an extra lug

Bigsteve i hear what ya saying but you've got to have the power in your donk to turn the. Just cause your tyre has a smaller diameter when aired down doesn't make it any easier for your truck to spin it, in fact you need more power to turn a flatter tyre. 35" is a pretty heavy tyre when you've only got 2.8 ponies.(shetlands at that)

My old GQ has all the lift I need for 35's, but my:
1) Brakes don't work well enough for me.
2) Gearing with standard 4.1:1 diffs doesn't allow me to climb the way I want to.
I am about to embark on a small project that will give me the ability to run bigger tyres & I'll tow it with the old GQ

How about Michelin XZL bullet proof used by the British army jeeps. 16" as well .....http://www.expeditionexchange.com/michelin/
i know quite a few people running BFG muddies..... and i'm yet to find a single person that has had any problem with them....... 'cept for shed :o I do know that the BFG A/T's have sidewall probs..... but i have never heard of anybody i know shredding one or even getting low kilometres out of them (the muddies). They may not in some peoples opinion be the best tyres out there.... but they would have to be the most popular, and they don't get that way for no reason.

I think that the tread pattern is pretty similare to the old dunlop road/track tyres evryone was using years ago (correct me it im wrong!)
You guys maybe dont have the same type of ground as here in Vic, where all my BF sidewall and tread breakages have been ;)

If you are talking about the altimate offroad tyre, (for just off road) How can you beat tractor tread, especially in the mud, and steep uphill climbs? They are pretty bullet proofe, like 4 up pli and are as aggressive as you can get!

Just had some Simex Extreme trekker 2's fitted to my Mq today. they are a top tyre. a 32" in them is actually 33.2" in diameter so it lifts it up a bit as well. I've also got B/FG'S A/T's fitted to my Pajero and they are a good all purpose tyre for it. they hold on pretty well when you drop a few psi.

yer i priced MTR's but they were the same as the Extreme Trekkers so that's why i went that way. I've got a shitty set of road tyres so i don't wear them out but you can't beat them in the bush.

Of all the tyres i have tried, the good allrounders ahve been my Xterrains.
MTR's make a great cheap trip tyre, for monger trips (which i used a new set for cape york last year)
BFG Mud's i won't touch, last set i did 2 sidewalls when only 5,000km's old. after comparing sidewall strength with an MTR in a test we did, the BFG tears quite easily.
My current Interco Trxus are working amazingly well, a good solid strong tyre, good open tread which clears well, big lugs to bite in and dig. footprint is nice when aired down and the drive fairly well on road, road noise is a lot lower than other aggressive mud tyres, it's only draw back is lack of speed rating.
The best offroad tyre i have had is a TSL Swamper... can't be beaten off road ..

I'm been thinking about these for my next set of rubber, hopefully in a 33x14.5. What are they like price wise? And what is the speed rating, it must be pretty dismal I'm guessing for you to be comenting about it??

14.5 is a pretty wide tyre twisty you'll have to buy another 4 runner and chop it in half to widen your's to cover them. if you plan on doing some racing just check you can have a tyre that wide

I guess this is another example of City Style over 4WD experience. 14.5"! Check required rim size before ordering!

14.5 wide....
It'll be heavy to turn & be a hard pull as well.
I wouldn't go wider that 12.5 on a lux & even then I think that is a bit too wide.

I'm running 15x10's so the rims should be wide enough. I've never seen a truck running any 14.5 wide so that's why I wouldn't mind doing it for my next set. The cops might give me a hard time but. My 33x12.5's already stick outside the TJM Deluxe flares by over an inch. I think I probably wont end up doing it, but I'd like to atleast see what it looks like ones day.
My truck is 60% show pony ;D

Well my Zuk runs 34 x 9.50 x 15 Super Swampers and they are pretty good for everything I do in it. Great in mud, slippery hill climbs, on road as well. Before them i had 7.00 x 17 Firestone SATs and they were the ducks guts. Awesome in the mud (probably better than the swamper) and on road were pretty good too and the price was the best bit $120 a tyre new.
The Patrol is running 33 x 10.50 BFG MTs and are fine for what I need them to do. Daily driving, high country touring, and weekends away to various places. They fit under the car perfectly, don't effect the steering like a 12.5 would, easy on components due to the size, handle well
So there you go currently they are the ultimate tyres for my needs

hey twisty what happened to the other 40%.
ya loose it in the pig pen ;D ;D I was going to get some tyres that were 16.5" in diameter but i couldn't get the rims at a reasonable price so i ditched the idea. not worth the hassles when you stuff a rim or tyres trying to replace them.

The other 40% is the practable modifications, such as turbo, etc...But it could slide a bit either way!!
The big bodylift, expensive alloy's etc... is the show side!!!
Don't worry about that one Andrew, it has been removed

Found the MT/Rs to be perfect for me. Good offroad while still good enough to drive to work everyday even in the wet. Don't think i would like to drive 50 km on the highway and through brisbane in the rain with swampers!

i run 36 TSL's for comps but the side wall is too soft for the weight of my truck...they measure 33 3/8" at 17 psi and less than 32 at 12 psi....at 8psi everyone kept coming up to tell me i had a flat ::)
they grip well and mould great but i lose so much height that they will have to go [ if i can ever afford another set of tyres]
the 38's on the other hand grip well and hold their height well...pity they measure too high off the truck as they measure ok on the truck and would be good for the comps.

MTRs for me too.
Excellent grip on road for the pattern. Stick like the proverbial to a blanket on rocks and loose dirt. Probably not as good in mud as the more aggressive tyres, but I'm only in mud about 6-8 times a year, so the on-road performance for me is a top priority...especially with the handbrake and baby girl aboard.
Got the 33" MTRs for a steal too.
