what here would be evryones ultimate trip? just off the top of my head mine would probably have to be, catch the train from adelaide to darwinwith thefourby onthe back of course! go to kakadu national park, then go overto queensland, travel cape york, lcmp and fraser island. Start heading down through NT-kings canyon-rainbow valley etc. A trek through the simpson then a detour down to the vic high country, and back home to adelaide South aus.I'd liketo do something like this before the age of 21. Of course this is just rough. SO what does everyone else think, what would be your ultimate trek?

Start from the Cape & work your way to Tassie, trying to not use bitumin.
It would take a heap of serious planning, but I reckon it would be an awesome trip.
well we've gone from wooton NSW to Mackay (via dubbo, gilgandra, tamworth etc), back down to rockhampton, up to cape york, down to clare SA (via cunnamulla, bourke and follow the darling to willcania), up to tennant creek, down to cocklebiddy on the nullarbor (the hard way, via desert shortcuts).. quick holiday over to esperance, then to forster NSW, to hamilton Island, and then to the rock via townsville and the barkly!
all that is spread over the last 4 years and includes countless diversions, side tracks interesting shortcuts and too many beautiful places in between to mention!
the places i've listed are just the places we've lived/worked in the last 3 years! It would take me forever to list the places we've visited...
so anyway, what im gettin at is thats my dream trip, and it's still going.. from here, it'll be up to darwin and across to broome (another 6-12 months) then god knows where next after that!
we always stay in one spot for 3 to 6 months, and really take the time to explore surrounding areas..
we've seen a bloody lot of australia, but we've got a bloody lot more to go yet!
From Mexico, for Baha 1000, wheeling Las Cruces, Arizona, through Moab, so cal, Rubicon, Colarado, through the rockies, into Canada, wheel canada, and get some good snow driving in through Alaska.
Alaska would be great, as Jack Lives there, I know, Ive seen the ads ;D
That would make my ultimate aus trip, the tulla fwy to the airport ;D

Sounds as though you've had a ball croozerute - one of these days, you've got to try and fit the CSR in - I've done it 4 times and can't wait to go again. The Finke is also high on my list for a repeat, as is the Simpson even though it's a pretty short and easy drive. Also, if you're ever in WA try and get to The Karijini National Park up in the Pilbara. Not to mention the Kimberley - the list goes on and on!!
Shed Guy mentioned Canada etc - I've driven the length and breadth of the Canadian Rockies and they are spectacular, BUT you're struggling to find anything remotely like a true Aus 4WD track. Likewise in Europe, apart from the snow/ice conditions, which can be pretty tricky at times.
For me, the ultimate Aus 4WD trip (with no time limit) would be up the WA coast via Exmouth and the Ningaloo Coast, across to the Karijini National Park, up the CSR to the Kimberley, along the Gibb River Road to Kununurra and then to Alice (Kakadu only if just after the wet), down the Finke, across the Simpson, up to Cape York, back down through NQ and then to the Flinders, to Coober Pedy and then back to Perth via Len Beadell's tracks. If I had my way I'd leave termorra!!
yeah baldeagle, i've definately had a ball.. I would love to do the csr, and that is definately high on my list.. I could drive around this country for years and years, ya can never see it all..
have been up through the flinders and it is bloody beautiful country, especially nth of wilpena..
and as you say also.. the len beadal tracks definately, i have travelled the bottom half of connie sue, it's fantastic!
Hmmm, Darwin. Been there, done that at start of year. It's all down to personal preference but bein stuck there for seven days was six days too long for the missus and me. That's just my opinion though.

G'day High N Mighty
Yep, I agree - perhaps a couple of days. You might notice I referred to Kakadu only after the wet - by the end of the dry season, it's not high on my list of "wannasees" - a bit like King's Canyon which, despite all the NT Govt tourist blurb, I think is a bit over-rated - but that's only my opinion, when comparing it with the magnificent gorges in the Karijini National Park ( ie Hamersley Range) in the Pilbara. On the other hand, Palm Valley and the Finke (quite close to King's Canyon) are top spots and well worth a visit or three.
Would be good to sit down and have a yak and a beer or six with you Croozerute - I reckon we might speak the same language about this terrific country of ours, especially out in the sticks.

My vehicle blew up 150kms outside of darwin and I was stuck in a ford xf panel van so really didn't get to check out the 4wding around or mainly Kakadu. I was very dissapointed at that and I will return, I was mainly dissapointed at the town and anything that I could see in a 2wd. The only things that stand out are seeing the crocidilles, having a drink with an indigenous person on new years eve in the street(but thats another long and funny story that I will remember for a long time) and experiencing wet season, in a built-up city kinda way.
