Hi, I just bought a GQ nissan 4.2 turbo diesel with a safari turbo system on it. It is only running at 4-5 pound boost, and I would like to get abit more out of it. The previous owner didn't know why it was only set at low boost and didn't bother to fiddle with it. I have been told that 8-10 psi isn't to unreasonable to expect the TD42 to handle. Just after a few other opinons. Were I work as a mechanic, my boss said he can set the boost and fuel up by measuring exhaust temp using a "Pyrogauge"?? is this a safe way to acheive better performance or should I just shell out the cost of a dyno tune?? Also what sort of fuel consumption should I expect out of the Patrol? It also has a straight through 2.5inch exhaust and a 75 litre tank.

Go the Dyno,
10 lbs is OK for that turbo as well, but you will need to get injection adjusted.
Economy, properly tuned & should be around 12-16 l per 100 km (depends on the weight of your right foot)

just like you said 8-10 psi isnt too unreasonable but going too much higher than that and it would be advisable to fit a intercooler to keep the air temp into the engine to a reasonable level, you would know the old cooler/denser air equals more oxygen and thus more power. for a good article with dyno and on road tests try looking up www.airpowersystems.com.au/safari/turbo/turbo_super/air_force1.htm

Before you start cranking up the boost, most diesel tuners we know reckon you can get plenty more grunt without touching the boost. Unlike petrols, fuel and exhaust seem to be the keys with oilers.

Dunno whereabouts you're from, Bikie, but check out Berrima Diesel in Berrima NSW (a small outfit but one of the best known tuners in the game), Binskins in Wauhope NSW (they do a mild 'blueprint' for something like under a grand), West End Diesel in Sydney (they've got an amazing range of tuning and testing gear as well as an in-house dyno, featured in the July issue), or MTQ (formerly known as DTS, they do a 35% increase on the 4.2 that'll be featured in the mag soon).

Let us know what you end up doing - and send us a pic (either a print or 300dpi jpg) of you and your truck for Driver Profiles!

I haven't played with it just yet, I have decided to go the dyno route. I am from brisbane and I had a quote from "Stafford Dyno" to set the engine and turbo up to run 8lb for around $120 bucks. A small price to pay when considering the cost of a diesel engine rebuild. I read an article on the pyrometer gauges and the advantages of having one, so I am still going to add one at a later date.

I do intend to intercool it shortly, towards the end of the year. I'm considering a top mount with the ol GU scoop, as there is very little room up front.

At present I am only getting around 450klm per 75 ltr tank.

The only pic I have of the car is on the Wizard Performance site :- http://www.wizardperformance.com.au/4.html mine is the 2nd from the top.
Cheers

Sorry, I didn't mention that it was the Toowoomba MTQ branch that told us about their Nissan 4.2 turbo fix (see www.dynamicturbo.com.au).

BTW, checked out you truck (the LWB, right?) on the Wizard site - looks very nice! Apart from the 7-inch lift, does it have anything unusual that might make an interesting custom 4WD story? We've run dozens of GQs (ditto 80 Series) over the years, but are always on the lookout for something that's been done differently - maybe a minor item, not necessarily the whole truck. If not, send us a pic of the rig and yourself for Driver Profiles anyway!

Hey evaluator,
thanks for the info, as i've only owned the patrol for 3 weeks I haven't had time to even get it off the bitumen yet let alone get any decent pictures of it, (slack I know) but as I am getting hitched in 3 weeks time there are many other things on the go. I will do my best to set up my profile shortly when I get a spare chance. ;)

Generally my truck is pretty run of the mill, but I haven't even started doing my own customisations either, at current it is running a 3-inch lift with rancho 9000's rear ARB locker, front and rear ARB bars, side bars, ARB turbo timer, Recaro front seats, dual batteries, safari turbo (of course you already knew that) snorkel, 31.5 cooper st's (road wheels) 33 X 12.5 BF muds (play tires), and a custom drawer system in the back. Still has the IPF's on the front also Cibie oscars and Narva targas on the roof.

I still have the seven inch lift minus shocks and 35X12.5 BF AT's in my shed, but probly won't use the seven inch for insurance reasons. :(
I'm currently adding a overhead console running down the centre line of the roof to make a home for my sony 10 stacker, map lights from a WRX sti and maybe a small compartment for nick nacks.

I'm planning to do the intercooler and a 2inch body lift when funds permit, hopefully shortly after we get back from the honeymoon ;D
