Hi Guys/Girls,
I tried something new on the weekend. That was the thing where you stall on the steep slope and you put the handbrake on and then put it in reverse and start it in gear... I thought I knew how but wasn't sure if I had got it right as I saw a cloud of black smoke and the car started rolling when I didn't mean it to etc..
If someone knows what I mean could you please let me know the correct order of things
Thanks

Here goes ::)
Hope fully i can get this right :P
1. Stall the 4WD in gear
2. Handbrake and foot brake on
3. Clutch in select reverse
4. handbrake off (with foot on brake)
5. Foot off clutch
6. Turn car on and take foot off brake at the same time
Some one please correct me if this is not the order of things as i can do it but cannot explain!!!!!!!!!

just about right, for a proper stall start once you have it in reverse, hold the foot brake, release the hand brake, slowy let the food brake off and engine compression will hold the car. then turn the key and you can slowly back down the hill, looking behind you of course.

Yep....correct.....let the hand brake off and ease up the pressure on the foot brake (still covering it though) and if you watch your gear stick you will see it move as the weight of the car is taken up on the gear, re-apply pressure on the foot brake and turn the key as you gently release but still cover the footbrake. (footbrake is released as/when the car fires up)....................
Process is known as a stall recovery.

Need to be careful in fuel injected petrols as the small squirt of fuel given to them can make tthe car take off quite quickly

yeah it can tak eof fast but it slows right back down,
I've done it with no foot brack or hand break when i turned the key, once you've turned it over just feather it to keep you from getting run away,

hi All
Stall recovery is different for manual gearbox / as a auto gear box this is given in the club that you belong to driver training

The scary thing about stall starting an auto is you have to stick it in neutral to start it and that can mean sliding backwards for a few seconds while you start it and select reverse if the braked don't hold you.. Luckily they don't stall easily, if at all. You just have to stay calm, keep it straight and avoid the brakes.
It pays to find a nice easy hill with plenty of run off and practice until it becomes second nature. The first time you try this you don't want to be on a slippery slope with no traction with trees on one side and a drop off on the other.

in the states i know of a few people that hack into their wiring and make an external switch to trip the "park" circuit.
that is, that they flick this switch and it tells the ECU that the car's in park, so it'll start, but really the auto can be in any gear, so it can start in reverse.
if your getting into steep steep stuff it might be worth a look

I'm going to look into that a bit more. I remember one of my mates mentioning this a while ago and he seemed to think it was easy to do. I guess it would depend on the 4wd also. :-\
Cheers Mick.

Most neutral (park) start switched I've seen are just a switch that open circuits when in any gear but N or P.
Make up a simple on/off switch and wiring to piggy back the wires to the neutral start switch,
When the switch (that you made up) in on it should start in any gear.
When it is off, starter works as normal (only in N or P)
Be carful tho, if you start in any gear, the car will move almost straight away like a manual gearbox. I guess that's what you want tho
Hope that helps

It is a simple thing to do and quite popular on vehicles that spend a lot of time in the High Country, we do have a fairly comprehensive thread on this very subject somewhere here. It is one of those things that you can fit, probably should if you're into the steep stuff, but don't make it easy to hit accidentally or obvious to all, especially if you hafta go thru the pits every year, it WILL score you a yellow canary if the rego guys find it at pit time!! It is an OFF-ROAD only switch!
