Looking at a new set of tyres for a GU Patrol R16. Thinking about Pro Comp X-Terrains in 35's. Anyone got a set and what are they like for road and mud, rocks etc? Did want MTR Wrangler's but only come in 33's/R16's. Anyone got any ideas probably spend up to $400 a tyre.

I've decided on a 3" lift kit for my GU Patrol using Dobinson
springs and Pro Comp ES9000 shockies due to the price
difference between a 4" and a 3" of $1400 for 1". I've also
decided on the Pro Comp Xterrain 33"s for my tyre due to
Qld Transport, hope I've made the right decision, soon see.

Sounds like a similar setup to my GQ 4" dobbo's ,rancho's
& 33" MTR's. Should make a fairly capable truck that also looks a lot tougher than any of the others in the woolies carpark. (not meaning that is where you drive it) ;)

The battle scars don't show as much with my custom pinstriping. ;D

Just wondering whether anyone has seen anyone running the Toyo Tranpath MT tyre in Australia.
It appears to be a good aggressive all terrain tyre, but doesn't appear to very common (Have only seen them once on a vehicle in Australia).
At present we know that it only comes in a 31 x 10.5R15, but have never read a review on them.
Does anyone have any info on them?
I've also been wondering about the yokohama Geolander M/T's, they look very agressive and would probably look really cool on my FJ, But i cant find any good aussie info on them..........any clues?

I've heard that the Geolanders are OK off road, but they wear quickly.
I haven't seen the Toyo or heard anything yet.

Price them and you wont think they are good!
The yoko dealer up the road when I compared prices on MTR, BFG and Yoko said
"wont bother with the Yoko price if thats the others your lookin at"...

Hey my45,
I find the es9000 pro comps pretty good, they don't seem too hard for my liking. I think the standard shockies on the GU are harder than my new one's.
;)
Yeah, i thought that there had to be a reason that noone was running the geolanders :-[
For good to hear about the procomps, i'm thining of getting them on my FJ.....................and there not to expensive :D

Isn't marketting a wonderful thing.
For the information of you all.
The Mickey Thomson radial Claw & the Pro-Comp X-T are essentially the same tyre and they are both made by the......surprise.........Cooper Avon Tyre Co.
I put 40,000km on a set of 305/70R16 (33/12.50-15 mould) Radial Claws & managed to about half wear them out. Now running MT/R's & am wearing faster but the traction (esp in rocky conditions) is amazing.
Ya pays ya muny an' ya takes yer choice.....
Got those geolanders priced, he said about $250 each...........I still like the look of them
procomp xterrain versus Thompson STT which is better guys? my first post

Hey Blu,
My MTRs will be due for replacement in a couple of months, reckon I'll get 55000kms out of them, might just make 60. I like the look of the Radial claws, how are they on road, my car is my work vehicle and racks up 40000kms a year around the burbs. I can't convince the g/f that i need two sets of wheels and couldn't be ar$ed changing them anyway if I'm honest. Currently running 265/75R16 but will probably go up a size (or two)

PP, If you choose between the new STTs, Radial Claws & MT/Rs, you won't make a mistake. For a Patrol, that would be my order of preference.

They are my three options at the moment, I'll be buying at tax time and it depends on the best deal at the time.

On the road they are a shocker IMO
These are on my mates cruiser with a 4" suspension lift, they are a 35.
Great off road especially in the mud, buton road vibrations galore, love the noise though :D

hey all,
i just got a set of STT's 315/75 16. GREAT Tyre. awsome on road, really quiet, yet to try off road. next Weekend!!
They would be my pick. Recommended by tyrepower over Baja Claw for strength (Claws cost more, so not money biased)
Cheers

Fair chance this guys picked a set of tyres by now ;D
three posts above he said he's buying around TAX time so some are still looking . ;D
ive got 33mtrs for on road and they are a good wearing tyre and pretty quite , i have 35" claws for off road and they are noisy and vibrate at low speed badly , but offroad they seem quite good even on the rocks at around 15psi (gu 4.5 wagon ) .
if i were to have just one tyre doing heaps of road km for work etc and the missus and kids in it all the time i think the claws would be down the list somewhat , but they do look good though ;) were as the mtr's are a jack off all trades and great for the rock

Hey Cranky, how about a bit of a report on your experiences with the MT MTZ's? A bit more detail about why you think they are great, and how they compare to tyres you've run in the past would be good!! We've seen/heard/experienced a lot from just about all the other tyres mentioned on this thread, MTR's, Claws, etc, but the MTZ's are relatively new and not much detail out there about how they perform in the harder stuff!
Hows about it?? Puullease?

I noticed just recently that BFG Muddies are now back to coming out of the States!!
When they originally changed to the KM Mud Terrain, they were manufactured in Mexico, and the quality and durability of the tyre dropped significantly, making it a very poor preformer in all but the 'looks' stakes! I've yet to see if the move back to making them in the good ole' USA will see a return to the performance and durability of the earlier BFG Muddies, pre KM, but at least it looks like it might be a step in the right direction!
They may well be a good allrounder in this latest incarnation, but the Mexican manufactured KM's really WERE NOT GOOD!!

im running pro coms find them awsome in the rocks espescially if aired down on 10 inch rims. they are a different compound to the claws. had mtrs previously and i find the pro comps a step up again in traction.

i think get your self a set of 15" rims and u can put the tyres you wanted on the car. and they are cheaper than 16" tyres
Peter @ Aawen4x4
17-11-2006, 05:44 PM
I seem to have put this up on more than 1 thread just recently, but changing from 16" to 15" rims isn't just a simple swap in size, there are some implications!!! Generally speaking, the 15's are 'low pressure, low load, high flotation' tyres, while the 16's are 'higher pressure, higher load, lower flotation' tyres.
15" 4WD tyres generally are imperial sized, ie 33x12.50R15's and as such they tend to be lower ply rated and load rated. But having said that, they are also just about the equivalent of an 85 profile tyre. The 85 profile on the 15's adds to the lower pressure, lower load, higher flotation ability, 'cos it gives you more sidewall height to work with, before the rim starts running on the inside of the tyre when you've deflated the tyre for flotation or traction! Whereas 16" 4WD tyres generally are metric sized, ie 285/75R16's and as such they tend to be higher ply rated and load rated. F'rinstance, the two tyre sizes mentioned above are virtually the same size tyre, but the 15" will be 6 ply rated and 108 load range, while the 16" tyre will more likely be 8 ply or even 10 ply rated and 120 load rated! AND THEY ARE BOTH ALMOST THE SAME SIZE TYRE, just different rim sizes!!
So when you think about making the change in rim size, consider the ramifications! The 15" will generally be a LOW PRESSURE LOW LOAD FLOTATION tyre, best suited to sand and things that require low pressure and lower loads, while the 16" tyre will work better for terrain that doesn't need such flotation but does need HIGH PRESSURE HIGH LOAD LOW FLOATION!
Ps This is a broad brush generalisation, and there ARE specific instances that are at odds, but take this as a GENERALISATION and it'll work for you most of the time!
