has anyone fitted 35,38 or 44's to landcruiser 80 series? was there much work involved, any modifications needed and how much did it change the cars on road handling? thanks

;D

lol did it change the on road handling much, and did it still power them well?

It changes the handling a fair bit, though if you can leave the factory sway bars connected on road, isnt as bad as with them off.

My 80 was a turbo 4.5 petrol, so 220kw @ the wheels meant the larger size didnt hurt it much, though a standard diesel, or 4.5 would get better economy and better 4wd ability from 4.88 gears which would return gearing fractionly below standard with 36" tyres.

A friend in the US runs 40" on his 80, but CV's are suffering.

nice looking machine, even with the 35's did the on road handling still suffer? they would be fitted to a turbo diesel, but dont want to turn into a total snail!

I would go to 4.56 or 4.88 diffs if going 35" or bigger, as loss of torque is the biggest problem with larger tyres, and a brake upgrade to slotted rotors and a btter pad material might help as well.

Just fitted 36x13x16 swampers last week on stock suspension with 2 inch cabin lift.

They should work well for you madcruiser, I found them to be the best all rounder size of all the swampers I have run.

I found they drove much nicer, and were less prone to side slip, sidewall movement once I put them on 10" rims after having them on 8" rims.

was any of the above done on this rig, just wondering just how much they'll slow you down in every day driving, is it still bearable, cheers ;D

Yes some home mods, had to cut loose the damaged factory side steps.

Regarding drivetrain, you can change the diff ratios and gearings to super low if your going to use those size tyres everyday. However i am not going to drive on those 36's everyday because it would be wayyy too noisy so i didn't need to change any ratios at all. I still have the 4.11 diffs and a short turbo gearbox.

won't those tyres affect your articulation though??

i know with my 32's i can neatly bury them up in the wells without any dramas but with the 36's, i think i'd be pushing it... at least until i start choppin... ;D ;D

Yes they would, i am going with a 4 inch suspension lift in the next month so articulation won't be a problem then.

I had 35's with a saggy 2 in spring lift and they fitted easy.
Didn't touch when u tucked them or any thing, but they were on rims with about 1" offset compared to the factory ones

I'm running 35x12.5x16 Procomp X-Terrains on 16x10 Beadlocked Rockcrawler rims. This is with a 4" Lift and Tough Dog Adjustable Shocks, this combo seems to work fine.
On anything from 6/9 on the hardest shock setting, the 80 handles like standard. Crank it up to 9/9 and it's stiffer on the road than my ladies Lancer. No need for the sway bars anymore.
35's on 8's will tuck under the guards no probs. on 10's you'll get a 1/2 inch sticking out, which is good for running up the ruts, but you still get it under the guards at full articulation. Just need to worry about bouncing.
Any bigger than 35's and I think you'll need to start cutting into your guards.

I've now got 36 x 12.5 Simex ET II's on a 6 " lift and it loves em, it only touches the back mud flap screw at full articulation.

If you're going to the XRCC round @ LCMP this weekend, you'll see "Siggy", the Exclusive Tyres 80 wearing the new 47" M/T's.
