abs takes some of the thinking out of breaking and lets you turn under locked wheel condition it is very good when you have different surfaces under each wheel like pulling off the edge of the road it reduces the chance of going in to a slide.
I think it is a good thing for my missus she has less feel of the brakes and doesn't know when it locks a wheel witch means she will go straight ahead even if she turns in an emergancy brake.
to answer your question I think abs is good in the dirt cant see why it wouldn't be

There is no car sold here that you can turn the abs off. It is illegal. If you find one, it will most likely be a home job. I know each cars abs is different. I tried the abs on a cruiser and it was great on road, but not so good in the dirt, it tended to over-react. From all the info I have, ABS is great for most cars on road, but many struggle in dirt.

many people either pull the fuse or make up a switch for use off road. It should always be operational on-road. Tends to play up on loose surfaces

Just about all the ABS units put on 4by's since about 2000 have been BETTER than unaided braking off road!! They are much better tuned to Australian conditions, and as long as you, the operator, applies the brakes firmly and keeps pressing harder, the ABS WILL WORK BETTER THAN ANYTHING YOU COULD DO WITHOUT IT!! Been tested by many professional drivers and testers, the failures that occur all come down to operators lifting off the brake when the ABS starts hammering away!! YOU'VE GOTTA KEEP PRESSING HARDER AS IT HAMMERS!
So if you've got it, learn how to and USE IT, if you don't have it, it is a worthwhile addition GET IT!
Must admit, that all the car types that I've been exposed too that were not good on dirt roads in the past are now great on dirt roads when pushed!! However, you can't drive 20 kph faster 'cos you've got ABS, you've still gotta drive to the conditions!! ABS will work and help you when you haven't absolutely overcooked it and are well beyond any help!! So drive to the conditions, and keep your speed suited to how far you need to stop!

I turn mine off when i go offroad, just by taking the fuse out,
its easy,
I found when i had it on going down slippery hills sometimes you want it to lock up,

Pretty sure some defensive driving schools take the fuse out of the abs to let you learn how the car handles without abs, then they put the fuse back in so you can see the improvement. Anyway, pull the fuse out and you should no longer have abs

I have an 80 series with abs and on corrugated roads it is a nightmare. It was scary the first time I had it affect me as it just wouldn't slow down no matter how hard I pushed the pedal. But when you put it into low range it turns the abs off anyway from the factory. I have read of ways to put a switch in this circuit to turn the abs on and off using the proper wiring. Another nuisance on these is that you can’t lock the centre diff in high range and locks it automatically in low range you can put a switch in here also to override this.

You must have the automatic 80 series as the manuals I drive with at work have a CD lock switch on the dash and the auto's I drive dont. (both lock cd automatically with low range but) ABS on the beach is not a good thing at all however for insurance purposes it cannot be disabled. >:(

The 80s autos with abs don't have a diff lock button but have a viscus lsd in high range but lock the diff when put into low range.
I just have to put a switch in to make it think it is in low range to lock the centre diff and disable abs and very hard to find also if you don't know its there :)

Can't imagine ANY condition when I'd WANT the wheels to lock up!
I'd rather have control at ALL times.

It's nothing to do with auto vs. manual trans. Any ABS equipped 80 series will have the viscous coupled (VC) transfer case. If you have VC, then you will not have a centre diff lock (CDL) switch fitted from the factory.
If you fit this switch, you can manually lock the CDL in high range, and the ABS can be disabled by following a sequence.
