What stops a snorkel from drawing water into the engine when it's absolutely pissing down with rain.

Little drain hole at the bottom of the air cleaner with a 1 way rubber valve, lets water out.
Also I believe the Safari ones have drainage holes which let water out. I am not 100% on this though.

Yeah i believe BT is right most standard air boxes come with a one way valve. The amount of rain that would enter through the snorkle would be minimal and your filter would soak most of it up any way!
theres holes at the back of the ram, while driving the water hits the back of the ram and the water runs out the holes.

i was thinking of ripping out the precleaner in the Mav and putting a precleaner in the snorkel instead ( foam one )..
you guys reckon this would be a good idea?? or not bother...

Anything that restricts the air flow will have a detterant effect on power & fuel economy.
If you can filet the air without resticting the flow, go for it, but stiffing foam down the snorkel will restrict the flow.

why is it on competition sometimes the guys face their snorkel heads backwards?

where abouts was that lachie. I was told around $640 for the kit and more if fitted for a snorkel for the Jeep and I thought that was a bit much considering the prices for other 4wds.
Maybee it is a Jeep thing ;D

Looking at all of the snorkels available for the GU, I have to say I think I prefer the genuine Nissan one.
They follow the bonnet line and just look a bit smarter than the Safari one which has that big diamond shape on the guard.
But hey, that's just my thoughts.
Genuine GU Nissan snorkels are Airtec's..
Turning the head around on the snorkel helps stop dust etc entering the intake..
The difference between Airtec and Safari is more a matter of personal choice and what you feel like spending.. or be different and build your own..

Oh, Ok. :)
Maybe it's because it has the 8" long chrome Nissan plaque that gives it the look ::)

I'm not sure, but I have seen the Nissan ones with a Donaldson "Type" top on them.
I suspect it might be a Nissan offering on their snorkel maybe.

I had an Airtec fitted to my GU III. Only reason I went for the Airtec was that it looked better than the Safari, IMO, and it didn't have the big NISSAN badge down the side. Cost $460. Have done river crossings up to the window. Very scary but the snorkle did the job.

yeah i'm up on the Pacific highway so it was easy for me too...
yeah they did a pretty good job, but if you're like me ( very picky) you're probably better off going elsewhere...
just small things like removing one of the Maverick stickers on the side fender... they must have used a knife coz now all the paintwork is marked in that area...
but apart from that... can't fault it... has never leaked that's for sure..
i think you get 5% off too if your a club member...

my safari snorkel on the defender has a flexable tube from the snorkel to the air box, but on the way there it has like a 90 degree junction (thats what it looks like to me a plumber) but it goes no where I presume it lets water out but I'm not sure how water tight it is the other way? it is about 40-50mm in diameter so if it takes water in it will take alot.Any thoughts out there. I was just going to silicone it up.

Before you do anything with it I would check to make sure it doesnt have a valve or flap in it to let water out but not in.

yer i think I will pull it out & try to force water into it & if it passes ok I'll leave it but if it lets any water past I think it will get the silicone.

when you're doing the water crossings, if you get the bow wave thing happening you shouldn't have to worry about water ingress through the butterfly valve... the pressure wouldn't be enough... unless you stop mid stream or we're talking over the bonnet monsoon kinda rivers... ;D ;D ;D

I've got an airtec on the troopy, I believe that i can put a precleaner on it, from what i've seen, most snorkels have the same size pipe at the ram, so would be interchangeable.
Out of curiosity has anyone used any of the snorkel socks, there are apparently two types, one, like a wind sock, that goes in under the ram - down the tube, and ontother type that goes over the ram, that you just turn around when it gets cruddy, they are intended for use just where it is really dusty.
Anyone found them or had experience with them??

yer it did let a little past but only under extreme force.
but as stated if a water crossing is done properlf it shouldn't matter so i have left it there for now. cause well i do stupid things. so we will see
