Going to Cape York in June/ july is this a good time to travel up there or would later in the season be better?
Also where is water available, can it be obtained from most towns & road houses?
Will be taking about 3 weeks from Brisbane, is this enough time to go straight up the guts and back?
What places up there are a must do?
Any other info would be great thanks.
OK I must be going nuts cause I swear I've replied to this and it was loooong post to #$%^ it.
3 weeks is tight but doable for the Cape. You just won't have time to see everything that's all and not much time to stay in one place very long and relax.
Water availability is not a problem, you will be fine.
If you fish, the September School holidays are a better time to go but temperature wise, June/July is the best.
Elliot and Fruit bat falls are worth a look and Traversing Lakefield NP is worth thinking about.
have a great trip!!
g,day having done this trip from rockhampton to the tip & back down through the gulf, kurrumba and back home at at a total of 3 weeks.i found we were stapped for time and would recomend more time as there was a lot we had to by pass due to lack off time. happy holidays tony.

Me too.
Buy the Cape York Adventurers Guide by Ron & Viv Moon and you will know everything you need. IMHO 3 weeks is at least a week too short....but then I like multiple day stops not drive drive drive for 3 weeks. You have no chance to really enjoy the Cape for what it is if you do. June July is fine....lots of tourers though for school holidays....I prefer late season (Sep/Oct) as its warmer.
3 weeks is definately pretty tight..
we also went up there from rocky in june year before last.. and it was pretty miserable weather.. but we still enjoyed it..
finding spots to camp on the way up before cairns can be pretty hard.. but one great spot we found if ya need an overnighter was Midge point, travellers rest c'van park.. it was a bloody fantastic place to stop, they have a huge bit of land there and you can get some gret spots...almost bush camping... right on the beach. it's the ONLY time I have enjoyed staying at a caravan park, and it was that good we stayed 2 nights and did a fair bit of fishing there..
national parks around townsville are very bad.. so don't worry about trying to overnight there..
unless ya like being surrounded by motorhomes and c'vans with blaring T.V's..
thats how we found midge point.. we drove straight back outta the nat park..lol

[What town would you be leaving from? We are going for three weeks leaving about 13th June (can't afford to take longer). A bloke at work here has been twice in a stock standard Triton dual cab & he normally goes in May as the fishing is better. He also says the roads are better earlier as they get graded after the wet & are not too badly corrugated. If you are interested in travel company let us know as so far we will be on our own - a coiuple of mates interested but not definite starters.

we did 3 weeks from toowoomba. 7 people 2 4b's and 2 motorbikes. like everyone says you're pushing it. as LUG said fruit bat and elliot falls are very nice spots. we went late august/sept in 1991. the corrigations are a killer so make sure your suspension is in good cond. if you want your 4b to come back intact.
buggerit everyone is off in July so I have to work. Have fun fellas, I'll be up there in September.
Cheers Mark.

Mark,
We will probably up around the same time. Look for 4 or so 80 series cruisers travelling together.
We leave Brisvegas @ 14 Sep for about 5 weeks total. Biggest hurdle is always the bitumen boredom up to Cairns.
It will be nice to camp up the Cape again. We are planning on getting into Cape Melville & Cpt Billy's landing... I haven't been before.
Cheers
Craig
Thanks Craig I'll keep an eye out. I've got a GU Patrol Ute with the tray pretty high. It's a white one!!
Not sure who else is coming yet but possibly a grey/silver cruiser, a white cruiser, a white GQ Patrol, all utes, a blue GU Patrol wagon and maybe even a Landrover Defender/county!!
Cheers, Mark.
Righto....should be at least my blue GXL TD, a mettalic beie GXL TD, a Red GXL TD and a grey GXL TD and a lone white 80 STD.
Craig
