MEET
GOSFORD meet

Am I correct in thinking it would take about 1.5 to 2 hrs to get to Tuggerah from Newcastle ? If I leave home to meet up with the Sydney fellas I'd have to leave at 4.00am at the latest, so was thinking of visiting the parents in Newcastle and leave from there.

is 10 a good limit ?
or should it be more?

Brendan

10 is a pretty good number in my opinion, but from past trips experience you usually get about 1/3 of the people have to drop out at the last minute.

Morning nath, mate the spot is yours. If I do end up coming it will be as passenger with Mick :D

Sadly clutch is getting worse, will do half day on it today and finish it tomorrow night I geuss. It's not easy with a trolley jack and a couple of bottle jacks that's for sure, this gearbox and transfer is like half a freaken car length and weighs as much as two maybe three camels. :-[

Ghost, sorry I didn't get back sooner, was going to pull an all nighter last night but couldnt be arsed and was buggered from work. Sorry mate.

If I dont catch up with you guys on sat have a good one, nath get some wheel lift (I know you will :P) and please someone get it on film this time.. Take heaps of photos and above all be safe yeh.

Thanks

Slippery Rock its self isn't that hard really. Last time we did it know one had lockers and with a little road building you would be fine. Its very straight forward the hardest part is the very start of the track where it gets washed out and dug out by 4wds. With a little road building provided it dry I think we could get everyone up there. ;) I'm taking a chainsaw and shovel to fix up a couple of areas along to way.

The day went well other than a few scratches, Col stuffed 2 tyres and a rim I think :o After we finished fixing my engine mout Steve, Col and myself caught up with the others which where doing the Zigzag. Col and steve sent me up a hill which is like Hell Hill only 100 metres longer :o (it makes Hell hill like like the freeway) Luckily I got up it because there was now way out but up. Than I looked around and Col and Steve where driving off. :o Steve directed me back to the others at the top of the Zigzag while Steve and Col went up the Zigzag. The Zigzag was a bit of a mess and took the others about 3 hours to get up. Even the double locked 4wds had trouble on this track. Rowan thought he would help Steve out on the ZigZag by removing all the rocks for him. ;D It was entertaining to watch. Steve put the rocks back in and adventually got up than they snatched Col up whos front locker wasn't working. :P
Than we went down Whitemans lane which is overgrown and very narrow now. We all got down there pretty easily though. A couple of people needed snatching due to diffs getting wedged on rocks but nothing serious.
Than we went to Smocko corner where we did some triming of a tree so it wouldn't damage anymore roofs of 4wds. Thats where I ran over a stump which went straight through my sidewall. Luckily I had a air jack which made changing the tyre on the side of a hill easy. Everyone got down there pretty easy this time around due to a little trimming of a tree. ;)
The last bit of this track caused a little bit of a problem for some of the lower 4wds though. Everyone got up adventually though some with a little help from the snatch strap. Thats where most said there goodbyes and left.
A few of us continued on to Slippery Rock which Steve, Rowan and myself drove before going home. It ended up a great day (except for some damage but shit hapeens :D) and i'm sure we will all do it again soon. Thanks for a geat day fellas and helping me get the patrol fixed to. ;)

Cheers Mick.

2 rims & one tyre ;)

BTW the locker was working fine, just the drivers side hub wasn't engaging, so to use the front dif at all, I had to engage the front locker & only get drive from the passenger side.

I have to oull the drivers side one apart & work out why it wasn't engaging.

Still a fun trip though ;)

It was very close to the Zigzag Paul. Basicaly once you get to the top of this hill your only probably a 1km from the zigzag. Col will be able to explain it better. :P This hill seemed to go for ever. Someone said it used to be called hell hill its self once. ??? It didn't have any black tyre marks on it so I don't think it had been used for a while, appart from Cols marks. I could smell his tyre smoke from the top. :D

Sounds like a good trip (apart from the carnage)

How did you wreck 2 rims Col ???

Where was your Hell Hill + Mick?

1st rim was dented going up one of the hills from the mud holes, I hit a rock near the top & due to running 15psi, rather than my usual 18psi, the rim made contact & was dented. Initially was OK, but when dragging Mick's GQ back to the road, I hit another rock on the same part of the rim & broke the bead, so lost a heap of air pretty quickly. I limped it to level ground & changed to the spare, then did a partial fix, should I need to use it later.
The second rim was on Whitemans lane, on the last pinch. I was having a big go & hit another rock, basically pushing in the inside of the rim & tearing off a lug to the point where it started losing heaps of air.
I have assessed the damage & it look like I might be able to repair both rims & the tyre, but will have to go into my workshop to do it (at home) & I will run my ATs for a few weeks while I check balancing etc.

The hill in question comes off the track to the zig zag, where normally we sort of go right to the ZZ, I looked at the GPS & the screen & knowing where the rest of the guys were, took the chance that we could climb it. Should we have all made it, we would have all met at the top of the hill near the powerlines at the same time. Mick made it OK & Steve probably would have too, but with my drivers side hub not working, I only had 3WD, so on the larger step, I did not have enough traction to get the lil' troopy up.
Wasn't for a lack of effort, as mick said, I had them smokin'

I'm looking forward to the next one, and bringing my own 4WD which I hope they fix today.

All fixed. After around of 2 years of having a mechanic going WTF?, never heard of that.
I now have a "new throttle position sensor due to given error code"
If they could connect something to it and look at a log, why take 2 years to work it out??
Oh well it didn't cost me money.

Track turns right down the hill then 100m or so down it has a big banked turn to the left and off towards the zig zag ??? you went left up the hill

If it is, Gary W told me thats basicly a cliff, winch only :o

Nice pics too guys ;D

Humpy that track is i think alot easier than zig zag just bloody steep. i drove it with a mate just before christmas. i reckon the issue for most people would be wheel base as in tipping over backwards in a short car. like a zuk or shortie patrol. in the wet a winch one for sure or a death wish.
that hill is actually hell hill i called the one off old mill rd that some did on a previous trip by mistake
it is an odd feeling though just seeing sky :o
the bog holes are on malcutta rd i think that is the right spelling

Theres one ledge at the top that even with 8 inches of lift I belted my bullbar but you could probably go around in your suzuki anyway ;). Providing you keep the 4wd straight you can not really get on any side angles like you can on the Zig Zag. I really don't think a 4wd without a very good limited slip diff in the rear or aleast one locker would get up there though. :-\

I'm going to do Rope road on friday to try out my low reduction. :D

Cheers Mick.

I have straightened the rims out & the hole in the tyre is OK now.

I will have to run tubes in both though now as there is still a little air escaping thru the bead.

Greenbeast spoke to one of the rangers outh there at Easter about the proposed track closures. Apparently it is all rumour and BS.

He said no track closures are proposed and that the Watagans is too popular a place. Even though the greenies are trying to close tracks he reckons it will never happen.
