I'm from Hobart and am only really just getting into going bush. one of my best trips, was only a day trip, about half an hour drive from hobart to snug tiers, we only had the one car and drove into pelverata falls. these falls are like 80 ar 90m high and unbelievable, you actually end up at the top of them. this trip had heaps of mud, rocky climbs and descents, involved a bit of bridge building, but was definitely worth it when we got there. only needed the winch once to get us up a slippery rock slab we couldn't get traction on, lots of fun.
there was an article in one of the previous issues on the arthur pieman region on west coast of tas, apparently very good up there. actually, your best bet would be to get a copy of a book on 4x4 tracks in tas, about 30 bucks i think.

Recently did a trip down to tassie in my Hilux Surf and absolutly loved it. I'm a photographer so the main point for going was to photograph, and to have some fun in 4x4 !
We got the spirit from Melbourne (after driving from brissie)
Places to see would be:
-Ben Lemond - although winter, should be stunning, just out of Launceston, 4x4 track to the top of a mountain which is a ski resort in winter.
- Tasman Peninsula is a must to have a look around, especially the coast.
- Bay of fires has some nice spots for camping
- Lake St Clair
Cradle Mountain,
thats just a few of the places you must visit, theres soo much to see there, we only had 12 days and that wasn't enough. have a look on my website for some piccies www.hiluxsurf.net (http://www.hiluxsurf.net)
cheers

Hi 93 pathy,
We went there last Easter and going again this Easter. It is a great place!!
The Boiling Billy publication "Camping Guide to Tasmania" is a good book.
We did the Nth West corner - Cradle Mt > Stanley > Arthur Pieman > Strahan > Lake St Clair > Mt Field NP. That was basically the loop we did. Took our time, had a good look around.
This time around we are going to do the Nth East down to Hobart.
There is heaps to see and if you are into bushwalking then the tracks available are excellent.
Just one thing. Roads are narrow and winding and whilst a 50klm stretch of road may be short doing it at sub 40k/hr slows you down a bit.
To be honest, if you get off the boat at Devonport then flip a coin (or three) ang go left, right or down the middle you really can't go wrong! :)
The west coast has some pretty good tracks down to some awesome beach views and it is amazing to see the shacks and "holiday" homes locals have built along the shore, tucked behind thick bushes and rocks!
One other thing, don't rush. We came across a family, in one of those Winnebago style things, in Stanley. They were trying to do the whole of Tassie in 7 days!! Bloody madness! You could spend 7 days at Mt Field NP without even trying!
Regards
Graham

Hey Gamfish, just go to this web-sight for prices and all that
http://www.spiritoftasmania.com.au/fares/non_standard_car.htm
you should be right towing a camper around, but if you want to do any wheeling you might have to drop it off at a caravan park

Thanks Reddo
Prices seem quite reasonable. I am keen to get a hold of the 4wd monthly dvd to tassie...have a look at what i can expect. I understand it is a great part of the country...especially for fourbys!

Currently planning a trip to TAS around November. Kicks off from Launceston anti-clockwise through to Hobart. Will post closer to the departure date for anyone interested in a tagalong.
