I am looking to buy a winch for a 100 series...What type of winch with what type of pulling power can u recommend and could someone tell me the difference between a high and low mount winch.
Cheers Rob.

Go the Warn 9000. ;)

As for High vs low mount, High has the motor above the bar & low has motor behind bar (I think).

Darren will correct me if I am wrong. :P

I have a personal preference for the HiMount - a range of reasons....but for many people the mounting hassles just aren't worth it....
So looking only at lowmount winches - I think the best is the HS9500ti and that would be my pick any day of the week after the 8274 (HiMount).....

As for the differnces betwene Himount & low mount - here's a few:
Yes the motor ir located above the drum,
They are also spir driven not planetary geared,
They mount with forward feet - not bottom bolts...Ie the winch is pressed against the mount when under load, not try to rip itself away.
Himount is faster - not just for the comp lads - but better if you need to winch & drive at the same time - overrunning the winch is less likely.
External brake - means you can use Synthetic rope without fear of heat degredation that can be caused by the low mount internal brake.

That enough for a start ;)

Most 4bees will get you to the cape, provided it is well maintained & looked after.
As for my recommmendations, I would use a GQ / GU Patrol, 70, 75, 78, 80, 90, 100, 120 series Cruiser or either of the 2 Landrovers in diesel.

My current vehicle is a Grey Import 70 Series Prado 2.4 Turbo Diesel.

I left it out because it cane be a bit hard on the fillings on the corrugations.
The 75 was nearly left out for the same reason, but it is a little (emphasise little) more refined.

Roothie may be a bit upset with it, but I like my creature comforts & prefer the feeling of coils over the bumps.

I would love a set of coils :) Thats what the ford courier is for (IFS) :D

But courier has torsion bar front and leaf rear, why is it what thats for, when it doesnt have coils?

A torsion bar is a coil beforeits coiled?
or a coil is a torsion bar after its coiled?
What about the coil on the end of a leaf spring?
Im getting mudled up ???

A torsion bar works in the same manner as a coil, but straight NOT coiled.... ::)

The eye on a leaf spring is for mouning, not for suspending.....

i got a hi mount 8274-50 never had any problems mounting it but they are one of the dearer warns avail. yes they are quicker and better suited to run synthetic rope which is 1 reason why i bought it as well as being on a comp vehicle.
the portable 1's are a good idea but a bit heavy to be lifting in and out off the back when you want to use it. but very handy if you need to winch backwards.
theres nothing wrong either in taking an older vehicle to the cape as long as it's well prepared.
