I joined this forum a couple of months ago, and haven't really posted since.

I've been cutting out the rust in my 62, its almost finished, I should have it registered on Tuesday, just before christmas.

I have had this truck for about 4 yrs. When I got it, there were quite a few accessories on it that I wanted. I knew it had rust, didn't know it was quite this bad as you couldn't see it.

While I've had it off the road I have taken the opportunity to do a few things to it besides cutting out the rust.

Summary of stuff on it when I bought it:

Dual Batteries
OME suspension
IPF lights
Roof console with cb and 12 stacker cd
ARB front bull bar and kaymar rear bar with wheel carrier and towbar
recon 3f motor on dual fuel.
31" tyres
milford cargo barrier

I have added

Climax drop shackles
procomp shocks
heavy duty sound proofing
paratus seats
2 inch body lift
new a/c compressor.

The body is a bit wobbly, but I don''t care. And the rust will return, it always does, but I'll patch it as I go. This 62 has 373,000 ks on it, has been across the guts of oz and to cape york (previous owner) I reckon I'm gonna keep it and give to that kid in the first two photos (BTW, don't use him to judge the increase in height of the truck, little bugger grew while this was occurring !!!) I got the shits with the job one day, came upstairs and said "that's it, I'm sellin it !!!", little fella cried so looks like I'm stuck with it :)

Its been a long haul and I'm stinging to get it registered !!!

Not bad champ, just out of interest, I can see that you have angle grinded all the rust off and i expect used some rust converter.........what did you do then?

Im guessing it was to big to simply woppy up..........did u have to weld some new sheet on?

Cheers fellas.

I spent a long long time with the grinder, and the power tool I fear the most (that I've used) is the grinder.

I used rust emul on the areas - its some way toxic smellin sheeeit.

Then we welded some metal in, zinc primed it, heap more rust emul and then bogged away to get some sort of finish.

So I went for a bit of a play the other day to see how these drop shackles go.

Driving the front right up a dirt ramp while keeping the other wheels on the flat ground and I can't get the shackles to open.

I'm guess its due to my springs which are old man emu heavy duty. I base this on having to use a bottle jack to "open" the spring when I removed the old shackles.

Would it be possible to get the springs adjusted to allow the shackles to open or am I up for new springs ???

Hi there. I have a 60 series (see HJ60 rebuild) with similar rust problems in the roof plus the bonnet. I will watch developments with your 62 and the other guy with the good old 55 with interest. Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, what is the rust emul you mentioned? I don't know it.

Are you sure it is not just the length of your shocks stopping you? Undo one end and try again.

The rust emul is called exactly that, its made by Rustemul Pty Ltd in Dee Why.

Paint job was a $1000 done by a mate, was not a flash job, painted all over but the body is lumpy but I don't care, is gonna get banged up, not on purpose but its gonna happen.

Re the shackles - I figure its the springs coz when I took the old shackles orf I had to use a bottle jack to pry them from the frame so i could get the new ones in there. I'm sure me new shox will be long enuff. The springs are Old Man Emu heavy duty so I'm guessin its them.

geez great results.

Might have to attack the old 60 series out the back of the shed.

One question though, I thought/was told the rust comes from the inside out - something to do with a lack of primer on the inner surfaces of the roof metal, and there's no point on trying to fix it cause it'll keep coming back.

Is this the case, or does it vary from vehicle to vehicle?

Wow I got moved !!!!

Maybe the rust forms from da inside, maybe i don't.

I reckon it froms when the salty crap get in where the seam sealer dries out, maybe when ya got roof racks it squashes it.

But I reckon there is 3 things ya can be sure ofi in life

Death

Taxes

and rust returning.

It'll be back fur sure .......

nice 60 there scarper, a tidy 60 always looks good.

Have yo thought about getting a electronic rust proofing device to kprevent the rust returning. They work by (sorry for the chem lesson) replacing elctrical charge to the body work (the metal bits anyway) hence preventing the iron turning into iron oxide. So one of these thinfs litteraly does the reverse of the rusting process.

Keep up the good work.
