View Full Version : Gettin Hooked
Hey guys, I need some help.
Otis is getting ready for his first comp, and he's still got the standard hook on the Warn.
I need to track down a rated winch hook with a spring-loaded keeper, to save Roothie from having to use Bow shackles. It'll be much quicker, and I'm trying to minimise our excuses for coming last.
Anyone know where to find 'em? Or should I just visit my local lifting equipment specialist.
Cheers,
Pat
I always just used the Warn hook, never came off or hurt the cable, but yes, any lifting supplies will have what you require.
Of course the way you put the hook over the cable, will stop it coming off too.......

I'll have to read up on the rules, but I think you either need to use a bow shackle or closed hook so it can't slip off during the recovery.

I got my hook from Auto1, but seen 'em in Repco too - both with the retainer clip.
Lifting shop if handy should have one too...
As I recall plenty of the rules require a clip & for it to be painted red....
PITA getting the clip back, cable out when you have to wear gloves as well.....
Pat how does the truck go off road? Loove the Claws ;D ;D

Most 4x4 & auto accessories shops have them with spring loaded retaining clip.
Mine had a list price of 29.95 @ Rebel Spares, but I have seen cheaper.
It is rated at 10,000 lb.
If you are stuck, PM me as I still have one in it's packaging @ home. ;)
I got mine from Mitre 10, I would never use a standard warn hook again as they are just way to small for both ends of a tree protector. With the closed eye you know that once you have the ends in it they aren`t going to come out untill you want them to.
BTW what comp is going to be otis`s 1st?
Who puts both ends of a tree protector on the hook?????
you removed your first post MY45, and the reson is, just as you stated in your first post..............
so you would of answered your own question if you left your original post there........

Pretty good. It's now got Airlockers front and back, so it can climb walls. The nice wide track gives it good stability, and the engine is bloody awesome. There's a few teething problems though that I'll have to iron out, but other than that, I'm a happy camper.

If all goes well, Round Two of the 4WD Monthly ARB Xtreme Winch Challenge at Booral (near Stroud and Glocester). That's if my sphincter doesn't implode...

RIP Porters eh!
I noticed a few good test spots just near the Spanish Steps last weekend, he could probably look there too, but like you said, it is getting pretty crowded out there lately, we have to wait for another convoy to clear before we went thru.
Shed guy, I didn't remove any post ???

When i changed my hook i wanted one to be able to take both ends of a tree protector so you can throw the protector around the tree and attach each end to the hook.
The next thing was i thought that trying to get the strap ends in past the clip would be hard [and harder to get out] so i got a hook that opens outwards and then locks into place.....chris [my spotter] took a little while to get used to the way it opens but now is very quick and it doesn't matter if he's got gloves on.
whats your email and i'll send a pic.
shane
We always passed on eye through the other, and eye on the hook.....
Was super fast on and off.

if you pass one end thru the other, and then hook the free end, doesnt that place a lot of strain on the tree protector from the side, trying to rip it? also wont it pull tight on the tree and ringbark it anyway?
a tree strap is much fatter than a cable, and if the eye is offset when placed, its a straight pull on the strap, so to speak.....
Okay team,
Thanks for all of your valuable advice converning the winch hook for Otis. I've now settled on a hook from John L Robertson Pty Ltd (chain and lifting specialists).
It cost me $22.69 including GST, it's rated and is called "8mm hook eye safety" on the invoice. The hook has a springloaded catch. The product code is 808018. I'm mentioning all this guff because these guys have branches all over Oz (Perth, Dandenong, Brissie, Dandenong etc). And yes, I paid for the hook out of my own pocket!
Thanks again guys,
Cheers,
