View Full Version : Bungaree Ridge Trail

30-11-2003, 10:12 PM
Spent the day up at Barrington tops.... had a great day!! then i decided to try out Bungaree Ridge trail (Thanks for setting me straight BT) pretty steep and rocky for a newbie..... some of the sections where the ute just slid down the hills on the loose gravel and a few washouts on really steep hills sorted me out in a hurry..... found myself stopping on more than one occaison to fill some with rocks to get the car through.... My friend in his cruiser didn't have quite as much problem with a little more clearance and bigger tyres. The Rodeo went well considering it is factory stock in every way!! that 3" lift is not far away!! Overall it was a great day that tought me a lot about doin the fourby thing propperly. It was sphincter tightening at times...... but i loved every minute of it ;D. Just thought i would share a couple of pics with you all. Might not seem too bad for you seasoned guys..... but these hills were fuggin steep! my wife nearly shit!! hehehe :D ;D 8)

I reckon I might have to take a cruise through that track sometime soon ;D

It's a good drive! if you got plenty of ground clearance and a good set of tyres then ya got no problem. Experienced guys would probably only find it mildly challenging. Took me about 4 hours to get from the top down to Moonan Flat (including stopping to rectify a missfire in the cruiser), most people could prolly do it in about 2 to 2 and a half. I'm told that if when you get to the creek crossing after the washed out section, and stop and take a wander up and down the small creek you will get some great photos for those like me who like to take those kinds of pictures.

There is plenty of good tracks up there.... and fire trails that aren't on maps.

Do you have coordinates for the starting point for that track?
I will then be able to check it out next time I am up that way ;D

I don't have co-ordinates for it, but it isn't hard to find. After coming through the dingo gate, travel along the Barrington road for about a kilometre, on your left is Dundundra Rd, the track is about 50 metres past that on the right. Give us a yell when ya wanna go up and i'll tag along for a while anyhow, not sure i wanna do it again until i get new tyres and a couple of inches lift.

Don't you mean Bungaree Ridge Trail then ???
Coordinates for trail head are
31 Degrees 56.062' S
151 Degrees 21.349' E

Takes you down to Midle Ridge Trail

That sounds about right........ like i said, i wasn't overly sure of the name of it, it's hard to read on the map i have. I'm using a topo map 25,000:1 scale. It does take you down to middle ridge trail, which is closed and apparently the gates are padlocked. But, you can still get back to Moonan Flat along it. Crosses Moonan Brook about 8 times i think.

Looks like a good track to visit

it is :D There's lots of them up around there.... how they rate against that one i'm not sure...... but there are still quite a few unmapped fire trails around the tops and they are generally harder to drive than the normal tracks because they are not designed for cars, they are designed primarily to stop fires. The National Sparks & Wildfire Service used to close these off once upon a time, now they leave them open for public use ;D

Up at stockton beach if i try and climb the steepest longest dune an can't make it i often stop simply pull the handbrake up( the one in the car, oops, i mean the one that's mechanical) and get out to take a photo. a vehicle thats dug down in the sand pretty much won't move if ya push it.

But my missus. now thats a different story. glad i stole those earplugs from work. what did ya say, i cant hear ya very well.
