View Full Version : Maximum Ramp Travel Index

The RTI may just be a way of showing off your 4WD, but I was wondering what the highest index score anyone has seen is? I have seen some scores around 1500, but I am sure they were measured the wrong way, as the axle was no where near as vertical as Pete Antunac's, and the wheelbase was only slightly shorter. So if anyone knows of any great scores, I'd like to know. (Pictures would be a bonus).
The RTI score also depends on the degree angle of the ramp, which is stated after the score normally.

my GU ute got an RTI of 758 reversed up the ramp and 676 forward up the 30 degree ramp.
that was with a 7" lift and i just had caster plates then and all links and shocks were in original positions.
haven't checked it since i put the drop brackets on.
near standard GQ SWB blitzed it on the RTI score so the only thing an RTI is good for is to compare the same vehicles or as a tool to see if the work you have just done has improved it or not.

would the sway bars on an 80 series with a 3" lift limit the articulation? Is it legal to remove them?

Swaybars will most certainly limit travel, but theres a bunch of manufacturers around who make swaybar "quick disconnects". They just replace the standard links to the axle, and as the name suggests, allow the swaybar to be disconnected quickly (usually by pulling out a tractor pin or similar), so you can just pull the pin the moment your off the blacktop, but maintain the anti-roll effect they have on-road.

That's bit of a cheat there - the rear tyre should be ON the ramp..... :-*

Are ramps set heights and lengths ?
Asking cause , done it the Queanbeyan 4wd show , they compared various rigs on a ramp. Standard stuff to lightly modded then big Mods.
A Rangie apparently could actually drive over the ramps , but of course . . . its a long way down.

I reckon the White Knight is my favourite truck in the world. Have you actually seen it in real life BT?? Or even better yet had a ride in it??
Anyway heres I pic I stole from somewhere on the net of an Ozzie Suzi travelling pretty good up a ramp.

Not yet, but we chat online a few times per month.
He sent me a DVD of some of the mud bogs he gets involved in as well & seeing it in action on the big screen is brilliant.
He is a top guy & his wife drives the Knight like a demon as well.

Is there a set ramp angle for competitions or is it purly worked on the math of distance traveled and angle and wheel base type figures

I would say because if you look at the piccy , the tyre is actually below the ramp. Its riding up the side.
Its using the width of the tyre to get distance , not wheel travel.

Yup Mr Flappan got it in 1..... :-*
the tyre should be fully on the ramp......
But hey it's impressive nonetheless.....

Coilovers and a link setup. It was/is Steve Azzapardis. It was supposd to be in Tuff truck 02 but it wasn't finished in time and missed out on scrutineering so was scratched from the event. Don't know if it has ever seen the light of day since.
It was a piece of art. He had notched the frame rails to allow for the links to sit up nic and high when at full stuff. The rear wheel tubs where given thhe hot rod treatment of muchh bigger tubs. I think it was a Vitara 2.0L engine too. Awesome work done properly

Yes, very cool indeed! I'm about to redo my rear suspension, and I'm thinking that bent lower links will provide me with the most clearance on the rocks? What do you guys think of bent links?
Chris
That suzi is of the hook :o. What a top looking/performing truck.

don't know about performing, I don't think it has ever gone any further than that unfortunately. he used to be a member of the NSW Zook Club but since then i have never seen nor heard anymore about it which is a shame

I would disagree with that. Sure if you lift your truck and dont mod your linkages you'll be severly limited. I have a 3" suspension lift and lengthened the linkages by 3"s as well and still flex's well.

GUJOHNO - are these pics taken of you while 4wdriving through the Vic High country? I reckon I passed you on a track last Cup Weekend 04 (i think it was cup weekend). Myself along with 5 of my mates on Motor bikes. We had come from Tobacco Flats - just down from the 'Slate Mine'.
You were with maybe 4 other forby's if I remember correctly?

Last Cup Weekend we were camping at Wonnagatta and did a couple of drives from there...
The tube bar only went on about a month ago before I had an ARB bar.

GU unless you have exactly the same up/down travel swaybars will limit your travel, as they keep the axles moving up and down evenly (same movement up as down). Really it is just a link to equalise travel. GU im definant that if you ran your truck up a ramp with them on and then off you would find that it flexs better with them off.

It cant flex any better unless I get longer shocks. As it is the springs are 'almost' loose at full travel.
But my truck is a daily driver and the ride is much better with the sway bars back on.
