Jase

There are a number of tracks on private properties in the Townsville region. Unfortunately many are closed to the general public due to irresponsible behavior.

I am one of two trip co-ordinators for the Townsville and District 4WD club and as such am responsible for negotiating access to new areas for our club, and I have heard horror stories galore.

So all I can offer is that you join a 4wd club and gain access to some of those areas.

I know most of us are sensible and responsible but some aren't so we all pay the price.

Jase,

Aha!! so the name and the face come together :-)
OK well I was a little occupied at the meeting but I did want to talk to you about any photos u got from trebonne, I'd love to put them on the web site.

So that you can put two and two together, I was the guy talking about future trips, sitting next to Margaret at the commitee table.

Cheers
David

This may be a bit late,

But I spent eight years in Townsville, I loved the place. Alot of my touring was around the Malanda area. Nice and green after the dry area of T'ville.

One of my favourites was Blencoe falls, west of Ingam. Roughly a three hour trip. Beautifall place, light 4wd tracks. Some good scenery. From there you can drive to Malanda around the back way.

Most to all of my treks, was from 'discover Aust. through 4WD' book.

I even went to Cook Town for lunch, a little under 48hrs of driving. Dantree is another piece of eye candy.

I just loved getting into my truck and going, maybe pick up a map along the way. These treks, I find are usaully better than planned ones.

Garry,

The Blencoe falls track is a good one.
There are also some lovely soft tracks between Mt Fox and Hidden Valley.
Longer trips up to Mt Suprise, Georgetown are very much worth it.

I have driven a bit from Paluma dam. to Hidden Valley, Good track at wet season. But they started fencing it off around 2000.

Another, is south. Through Mackay a little west, then up through the burdikin. Only did that one, once though.

I am now at Toowoomba, left T'ville around early '02. Early Feb, hoping to drive around New Zealand, and if time permits, check out the Blue Mountains.

So the Blonde ;) and I will be searching for some good tracks around south QLD, and NTH NSW. 8)

Is the Bluewater track still open or have the Forestry closed it? That was a great track esp when it was damp...
Kirrama Range?
Valley of Lagoons?

As of late February the Bluewater track was closed, rang the Ingham parks and wildlife and they couldn't really tell me if it was open to fourbys but I know trail bikes still use it.

The same department issues permits to the state forests around the district but most are closed during the wet season their phone number is 4777 2822 ask for permits to traverse state forests.

I spoke to Forestry re Bluewater track in my capacity as Trip Co-ordinator for the club and was told it is now closed to vehicular access.

The Valley of Lagoons area is a great place but the property of the same name is, I hear, reluctant to allow 4wd access now. Still there are some nice places to camp in the region.

Gidday guys, just new to the board and thought i would say hi.
Yeah tracks in our part of the world are becoming increasingly harder to come by that's for sure, i know you already have the say so from the forestry dept in regards to Bluewater range being closed but i can tell you for sure this is true.

I live on Forestry Rd out there and was up the range last weekend, you can go up as far as the gates where the little shed is constructed but the gates are closed, not locked but closed, out of respect i didn't go through but i know for a fact plenty do, would love to go on as i know guys on bikes and quads who go through regularly and they say it is an interesting track. Still it is a scenic 1/2 hr drive up and back with a nice swimming hole at the bottom of the range can be very enjoyable.

Good for a drive but if you really want to test your 4wd's capabilities try Mt Louisa (eastern side) or go up to Ollera when it's wet can be very challenging but alot of fun. Hope this helps although you guys may already know of these places. :)

Thanks Freak for the info and yes Mt Louisa is a popular spot but I know with all the land releases in that area it will no longer be available in fact it will probably be cover with housing estates by the end of next year :-[. And you are right about the swimming hole ;D

I was thinking more about the bohle side of Mt Louisa but yeah your right with what you say even that side will fill up in the not to distant future.

I have only been back in Townsville for a year after living in Bris for 9yrs and was amazed at how much the place has advanced, i used to ride my dirtbike and 4 wheel drive all through what is now greenwood estate in kirwan from Thuringowa dr right thru to the bohle ck, would get arrested if i tried it now.

Have you joined the Townsville district 4b club yet mate? was wondering what it was like as i might consider joining once i take possesion of the Navara. :)

I currently joining the Townsville district 4by club well trying anyway I'am always out of town and it is very hard to go to meetings and Trips but I,m determined to join

The club has access to a few Properties so that alone is worth Joining

Thanks for the info Turbo i to have every intention of at least attending a meeting but i am in the same boat as you mate working fly in/ fly out is good for the bank account but a real strain on social life.

As for the property access yes i can see that would be an advantage, sad that so many fools in the past have wrecked it for others but you can't blame the land owners for protecting their interests, anyway when i make one of the meetings i look forward to meeting yourself and nqrangerover
