Have just had a great week at Steep Point, which is the western-most point of WA. If anyone gets the chance, it's well worth the trip. We camped out at the Point and had the place pretty well to ourselves, but typically it's very busy during the Nov- Feb period with many chasing Spanish Mackeral off the cliffs. We fished for 3 days and landed 8 Spaniards, and missed about another dozen. I took 3 mates up (my 100 plus a GQ) who'd never been before, so I took them sightseeing as well, south along the Zuytdorp Cliffs - many great spots. Great camping is also available on the beaches just before the Point - very sheltered and peaceful. The whole area is looked after by a resident ranger who keeps the bins empty and the dunnies clean for $20 per vehicle and $5 per person per night. A small car-top tinnie is also really worthwhile. Another top Aussie spot.

Sorry Munga, can't help you with the pics. Yes, Steep Point and the whole area is a great spot as long as it's not too crowded. From now on until the end of Jan the point will be pretty full with Spanish Mackeral fishermen - I normally go in Jan but will probably leave it and go again early March - still plenty of big Spaniards and not as many people - pretty good combination, I reckon. Another absolutely top spot is Dirk Hartog Island, off the end of Steep Point, if you can afford the $650 it costs to take your vehicle on the one-vehicle barge 3 kms across South Passage from Steep Point to the island - bloody exorbitant, but what the hell - you're a long time dead!! We spent 10 days camping on the island July 2002 and had a ball, despite the fact that my clumsy mate broke his arm and wrist on the second day while launching a car-topper, and he hadn't even had a beer!!!! But he had plenty during the next 8 days to wash down the pain-killers! We splinted and bandaged it and he eventually had it re-broken and set when he got back to Perth. But the island is a top spot (about 90 kms long and 15 kms wide) with terrific scenery right round the coast, excellent fishing, some top camping spots and VERY FEW PEOPLE. We might even go again next year.

Mainly spinning (big lures with triple ganged hooks) and we always put a ballon out if the wind is from the right direction, using big gardies. Success seems to vary according to the number of big tigers in the vicinity, and I mean big buggers. I've been down at the cliff at 5.30 am to start fishing and the bloody tigers have been cruising up and down waiting for breakfast - it's a good incentive not to fall in!!!

hey guys

I've just returned from a trip from brissi to up as far as exmouth. I was born in carnarvon and still have family there, my old man has been living there 4 more than 30 years. I visitted in aug/sept and I couldnt beleave how many travellers there were, staying in c'von & travelling north. I tell u what its good to see so many sotheners & interstate travellers getting to see the mid to nth west coast. My partner is from brissi & she loved it, the beaches, the water, the weather, how different the country side is. And the one thing I hope that never changes is the fishing. I love it.

G'day Toad. Hope you travelled down the Ningaloo coast from Exmouth across Yardie Creek to Coral Bay - some fantastic camping spots with great fishing and, of course, the Ningaloo Reef coral. Also a couple of excellent 4WD tracks leading up into the Cape Range off the coastal track. A couple of good walking tracks in the Cape Range, as well. All in all, another excellent Oz spot.

Gday Baldeagle
we actually travelled from cvon to ningaloo homestead then camped south of yardie ck bloody great up there. I recon the ningaloo is 100 times better than the great barrier which looks like its dying in some spots. you are right it is another excellent Oz spot. I hope we get back there soon.

Gday toad ,no I didnt spend much time at the sandy mostly out at sea,We only came home when it was a full moon. That was the worst time to go out to many fights, darkies onto whities I had never seen so much blood :-*.Some of the deckies would earn good $$$$$ come home and blow it all on alchohol, drugs .Every chance I used to go and watch the local footy, what an eye opener. Its a fair old drive to away games ,I thought an hour was bad enough try 4 hours one way to exmouth, just down the road to the locals . :o
