View Full Version : Barrington Tracks

I found a track up at the Barrington Tops last Sunday and was wondering if anybody knew where it leads........ i followed it down for a few kilometres... pretty steep and rocky, it is the track that is first right after passing Dundundra Rd (about 50 metres) it drops down into the valley, and goes from steep rocky to flat soft ground back to steep and rutted i couldn't go too much further because i knew nothing of the track and the storms that hit Sunday evening were on their way and i didn't want to get caught down there if it rained, i'd be sleeping there for a day or two before it would be dry enough to get out..... i'm interested in exactly where ti goes :) would appreciate any information you guys might have about it.

Found it.
If you are heading west & you pass Dunundra rd, the next track on the same side is Boundary Rd.
It comes back around & onto Dunundra Rd.
If you are heading east, the track is on the other side, so would be Bungaree Ridge Trail & brings you onto Middle Ridge Trail at a T intersection. TR to go towards Moonan Flat or TL toward mount Barrington.

ahhh ok kewl!! it's the first one on the right after Dundundra Rd :D ya got any idea how far it goes before ya get to the "T" intersection? the left turn to Mount Barrington sounds like the go to me...... have ya been there? i'm curious...... might go back in a couple of weeks and spend the day following it, if it's worth following all the way that is :D Take the family (sure to frighten the piss out of the wife who hasn't been 4WD'n yet!) I don't want to get into anything too extreme at the moment.... the track down the mountain is ok... but i am ill equiped at the moment and have next to no recovery gear.... so it's handy to know in advance what i will be up against. Thanks again for your help

Only a couple of km to the t intersection.
I haven't actually been that far up Middle Ridge Rd before, but the parts I have been on are very easy forest trails.
Not a good idea to go out alone, especially with limited recovery gear.
Be best if you can get out there with a couple of mates if you are going to get off the beaten track, but if you must, at least get a UHF radio, you might be able to reach some other travellers if you have problems, but I cannot guarantee it.
Also get some maps of the area.

The track i went down was more of a goat track than a forest track...... there was a couple of mild bits through some pine trees....... but the rest was fairly steep and rough (for me as a newbie anyhow) i already have a UHF, i made sure i got one before i went out into the bush....... i carry some recovery gear, shovel, ropes etc........ but as yet i have no turfor or snatch straps....... they are high on my list of to get things :) I am going to try to go with somebody else next time, i have a couple of friends with cruisers that rarely take them off a sealed road...... they might wanna come along for the day out ??? but they haven't been bitten by the bug yet........ i'm sure iu can find somebody that wants to go up there with me :) i'm actually looking forward to going back up there :D

If you want good tracks, play around near Devils Hole, Pole Blue or at the start of the little Manning river all of which is on the right side of the road traveling from Gloucester, and take a mate.

Hopefully at Woodpecker. What's ya rig? Theres harder tracks 15 min south of Gloucester. But on some tracks damage may be unavoidable, just ask my sill and door.

Gloucester is a lil far just for a few hours driving...... I'm in Scone. As my name says.... i drive a Rodeo dual-cab..... ground clearance is a lil limited.... i heard through these boards of a place that sells 3" lift kits...... am looking into that ;D

If Gloucester is to far how about Nundell Pines or Nowendoc Pines. These are good to awsome, rocky/stoney and slipery clay and dont realy need alot of ground clearance. Known alot of people to be winched or snatched out of there

i'll keep the tricky and muddy ones until i have a little more experience :) sounds like fun though!!

There are also a few tracks like that near Jerusalem falls.
Lots of fun ;D

You can get some good quality recovery gear for very reasonable prices from www.offroadshop.com.au

(No I don't work there)

some good prices there....... thanks! I am getting some prices from the local spares shop here..... he seems to be reasonably priced, if not, then that place looks like the go!

I have since spoken to somebody connected to the National Sparks & Wildfire, sorry..... i mean National Parks and Wildlife..... namely our local Fire Control Officer, and he drove that track a few months back at the end of the last fire season and apparently it's badly washed out towards the first creek crossing. he said national sparks were gonna send a dozer down there to fix it, but as yet haven't done it. Might drive down and take a look without trying to get through.

Washouts?

They sent a dozer down terrible billy a few years ago & it is still a highway (IMO)
Hopefully soon there will something more challenging about that track as it is starting to rut up a little (a few inches anyway) a few months ago

I plan on checking it out on the coming weekend...... he said it was impassible....... but i think he tends to er on the side of caution..... he said that he couldn't or wouldn't take the Jackaroo he drives through it...... i guess we will soon see

Be careful if the tracks are wet.
This area is mostly clay & can quickly go from a reasonable level of grip to zero in bugger all time.
Even mud tyres can be useless in the clay on the tops.

i don't intend to travel them if there has been rain within 2 days...... as you said, some of the tracks are black mud and as slippery as hell. And i am taking somebody else with me this time so there will be two vehicles 8)

Looks like we may be holding an impromptu trip in Jan to check out some tracks for future trips.
We so far have 2 definites with lifted cruisers, may be a few more, but waiting to confirm.
