Am just about to get my first 4X4 and have chosen to go with the little suzuki sierra, as i am on a budget, read student.
Most of the mods would be fitted at home and im wondering on a few things.
What would i need to do to clear 33" Mongrels without cutting the guards?
Also, what is the cost of getting a roll cage done?
Thanks
Have chat with some the guys over on Outer Limits, there are some running Mongrels.

Mongrels................................
I wouldn't use them on my trailer.
Spend the extra & get some "NEW" tyres, not remanufactured ones.
Like Darren keeps saying. Poor people can't afford to buy cheap things.

Sus out KAOS 4x4, they are jeep and zook specialists in Canberra. They do a lot of custom stuff and know what they are on about.
www.kaos4x4.com (http://www.kaos4x4.com) should do it.

I have a mate with 32 inche mongrels with just a 2" body lift and some trimming to the backs of the front guards (Namely the seam)
My main question is why dont you want to cut??, If you want to avoid cutting with 33's you are going to need some decent lift, I had to do a fair bit of cutting to fit 32 inch MTR's and that was with a SPOA, cut the guards and keep it low, unless its like a 97 coiler or something really clean.

Dont really want to cut the guards as im not experienced with that sort of stuff. Might be thinking of putting on bigger rubber instead of the mongrels, like 35" BFG Muddies or Wrangler MTRs.
Would 35" fit with some trimming (Still look fairly stock) 2" body lift, SPOA and 2" lifed leafs? Ths is starting to look like a pretty tall suzi.
Can you put up a pic of how much you had to cut?

If you have SPOA you need to fold the seams down on the back of the front guard and cut off the bumper mount for 31"
Anything bigger and cutting will be needed.

Yep I cut of the lowest closest cornber of that seem them hammered in the corner (have ran 34's also) which gave me plenty of clearance, cant post a pic of it though as i am between bodies at present.

Best thing to do with a zook, of course when no one is in it, it to stick a rag in the tank, then light it on fire and run like the wind. ;D :-X

Hmmmm Been embarrassed on the trail by little zooks out doing your rig hey :o ;D
35" would need heaps of mods I would think. Maybe if you put hilux diffs under with wide offset rims and really stiff springs so the tires sat outside the guards and couldn't flex ;D

Ok, looks like 33" for the little beast. Have to agree about Bruce, sounds like youve been burnt (excuse the pun) by some little zooks getting places where you had to turn around.
Im surprised no one has suggested extended shackles for body lift. Anyone know who sells them in victoria?
I dunno about Vic...... but i know that they are illegal here in NSW :-X

If you want 35' tyres without cutting i would recomend getting a floating coil suspension system about 2' to 3' lift installed and a 3' body lift

Dirty,
Since you are in victoria, might i suggest that you get in touch with the suzuki 4wd club - there are plenty of cars there that are well and truely built up to be running everything up to 36" swampers. Seeing these cars "in the flesh" and chatting to the owners / builders will give you a pretty good idea about what will be required to develop this beast you are planning.
See my www (on the left under my user name) for club web site address.
Cheers mate,

hey if u want to fit 33s on ur lill truck this is what i done was get hold of some datsun 120y rear leaf spings and get hold of someone with a press and re-set the springs with about a extra 4.5' curve than your standard rear springs then wack some 2' longer shackles on the back and do the same with the front but use ur old sierra rear springs this way gives you a shit load of articulation which is what you want ;D

why dont you just make your own extended shackles if you could get hold of some 40x5mm flat bar the a piece of cake to make and it will save you a whole lot of money 8)

Custom shackels! How can you even start to compare them to say a set of superior drop shackels? ??? Yeah they maybe a tad longer but no where near as flexible!
Go the drop shackels Dirty! ;D

Drop shackles are there for sensational droop. They will probably be the last thing that i do.
This will be slower than first expected as my daily driver is playing up. :'( :'( :'(

Don't tell them it's a Surf.
Try 4Runner or Lux.
Before you do though, ring a toyota dealer not in your area (eg Brian Hilton at Gosford) & confirm the part from the runner is the same, as I am pretty sure it will be.

Wow thats like 8 inches of lift for a 35, I'm running a 2 inch body lift, OME rears all round and and clearing 34's.
Stay low and cut, it will be soooo much more stable.

Been watching that on outerlimits and suzuki forum, nice work. Would love to have the resources to extend the chassis at home, but as a student i am struggling to find teh cash to start modifying.
35's would be soo cool 8) 8) 8), but the tyre cost alone is more than i paid for the car.
Have thought about joining the suzuki owners club, but i dont know how much value i would get out of it, as i wouldn't be able to attend many meetings due to work commitments, and uni keeps me tied down and limit trips to sundays only. Not sure, talk me into it. ;)

FYI if "Lack of resources" is your biggest concearn in a build a place like a 4x4 club is the perfect place to be. I can't weld, I have access to a mig in my dads work shop but for my chasis ext. & shock mounts I let another club member do the fabrications, I just did all the dirty work like cleaning back the chassis rails and stuff.
Like wise with the roll cage, I'm just after something that protects me (I do not care whatsoever about panels) and it needs to clear my head so I've picked a basic design but have said to the person eventually doing it that I want bar X to run across here and the rest is up to you, get as creative as you want.
Nuff said, convinced yet??? :)
