Very nice job from the pictures. A mate had an old 3F in his and decided to go the easier option of putting a Chev into his cruiser. It now goes almost as well as my Turbo diesel...LOL ;D

hey UDM, was the 3F still running ok with that amount of km or is that also why you swapped.

udm
26-09-2005, 08:09 PM
It was still going good (no smoke, etc) only that it[s an ancient low power/torque, carbie stalling, fuel guzzler engine.

Corry
26-09-2005, 09:37 PM
That's a great set of photo's showing the swap UDM. Well done, good to see the effort that is put in.
How did you go with the fuel lines. Did you change over the set up so that you can pick which tank, or is it still set at 'rear pumps into front'?

Well done.

udm
03-10-2005, 09:01 PM
The 80 series has a factory switch for the reserve tank, so... no need to modify there... what I did change is the side the fuel lines run, now they are on the other side of the car, opposite to exhaust sytem.

Done the 4" lift, but cant seem to get rid of the death wobbles.
Checked so far: wheel align/balance done at 1 place and rechecked at another, wheel bearings, all bushes replaced.

To check list: knuckle bearings, tie rod ends.
(Everything seems to be tight)

Im thinking of replacing the toughdog rtc damper for the XHD rtc toughdog damper.
This is what has been done so far, so I really dont know what to look at next.

Ive used 5.5 degree plates from snake racing.

If anything, the RTC will REDUCE the death wobbles, not make it worse, you might find going to the XHD unit is fatal!! Have you replaced the leading arm bushes, diff end and including the bushes at the body end?

udm
24-10-2005, 06:41 PM
RTC will reduce wobbles, not make it worse
Thats what Im after.

Going to the XHD unit is fatal!!
I didnt quite understand why.

Ulises

Peter @ Aawen4x4
24-10-2005, 06:51 PM
Sorry, play on your words! If you have the death wobbles with an RTC damper on, going to something lesser, like the XHD should be worse.... Worse than death, I could only come up with fatal at the time, I apologise!!

But seriously, if the RTC damper is set up right, it will be reducing the wobbles, and going to the XHD which has less ability to damp and rtc than the one you already have on, it could be fatal

udm
24-10-2005, 07:21 PM
Peter, we got it all mixed up, there is a ToughDog RTC damper for $165 (what I have right now), the other option was a ToughDog RTC XHD/xtreme big bore for $300, this is the damper I was talking about.

Peter @ Aawen4x4
24-10-2005, 07:27 PM
OK! Tough dog also do a gas charged XHD non rtc damper. THAT's the one I thought you were talking about!!

BTW spoke to a Wheel Alignment mob here in SA that specialises in curing death wobbles (etal), they said to check and replace the panhard rod bushes, both ends, and use genuine Nissan rubber bushes, the urethane and nolethane jobbies are too hard!

udm
24-10-2005, 07:35 PM
replace the panhard rod bushes

Yeh, the cars got brand spanking new genuine bushes all around, big bucks :o

Peter @ Aawen4x4
24-10-2005, 07:47 PM
The mob I spoke to also said to look at the "thrust" alignment. Apparently, it needs to be corrected, not aligned out at the front!

When I looked a little confused at that, they showed me a report from a Patrol that had its' rear axle travelling 6mm further right than the front, and there was some degree of toe out on that side, toe in on the other side, on the rear. The vehicle had been thrust aligned to counter that, and apparently that is OK for little cars, not OK for Patrols, lifte, big wheels, etc, etc. They put adjustable upper and lower arms in the back, and wheel aligned the whole thing straight and NO MORE DEATH WOBBLE!

Might be worth looking at, but you'd need to go to somone like Shim-a-line or Truck-a-line, not the local car wheel alignment place!

RedGQ
24-10-2005, 07:56 PM
Could be more simple...

I'm not sure how old your tyres are but...

With my previous GQ ute the old BFG Muddie were on their way out and even a wheel ballance and alignment couldn't get the wobbles away at 90 km/h. They got to the point of being scary wobbles, and so...

NEW TYRES ;D ;D

Problem gone. Like I said I don't know how old the tyres are, if they're new then it got me stuffed. It sounds like you've done the lot. ???

udm
24-10-2005, 08:08 PM
I don't know how old the tyres are

The tyres are bfg AT 33" with only 10000km on them.
The only thing left to check are the knuckle bearings, but wont do yet unless a cv decides to fu%$&up.

Sounds like you have just about done everything that you have needed to do. Just one simple thought remains, Have you jacked the car up and checked your wheel bearings?

Hace you been given a reading for the caster when you had your wheel alignment done? If so what is the reading? Have you fitted adjustable panhard bars?

BlackGQ has just got his hubs fitted, Iīve had them for about a year... heīll find out as soon as he hits something pretty hard to make the knobs internal clips break. You lose the knob and the bloody water will lead itīs way into the wheel bearings and cvīs, not good at all. >:(

As for the damper (4way = tough dog), Im looking at the next model up, which is a bigbore damper for around $300 (the spring itself is like 100mm diameter).

-33-12.5-15 muddies/wheels, bfg/mickey thompson kinda tyre (as soon as these atīs are cactus)
-a decent steel front bar

Just wondering how hard the air horns were toput in?

udm
30-12-2005, 11:37 AM
how hard the air horns were toput in?

It was very simple, just the usual stuff, relays, fuses, brackets. A signal comes from the original horn and feeds the relay, the relay feeds the air horns, itīs kinda like hooking the spotties to the high beam, only with a little more work, about 2 hours for the whole lot.

Seriously... I havenīt noticed any diference with the rtc, but I never drove the car with the 4" lift and the genuine damper on, and now that itīs leaking (still havenīt taken it back) it should be softer (worse) and it still drives good, so apparently, it doesnīt make much difference.

We got the tyres ;D. Iīm glad the blokes couldnīt find us the BFGīs cause we bought 2 sets of MTRīs instead, they are awesome 8), and look really good, they are pretty big, not what I was used to... but not going any smaller again. ;D

I love the rimīs offset, the tyres sit where I want them.

The n/a diesel seems to pull them pretty well, and the other one just rubs on the rear mud flap, nothing to worry about.

A lot of people complain about the gearing, but I like it, driving at 100km/h the engine doesnīt sound so over reved. Speedoīs out around 11%, before was 7% with the 33īs.

Got them at 5.00pm and at 6.00pm we were already getting them dirty. These things grip on to anything.

It was a Bocar two piece bar, so just got rid of the bottom section as soon as I got the car... had to gain a bit more clearance without changing it. ;) So if something has to be hit, it will be the snatch hooks under the car and not the soft alloy bar... but that doesnīt stop you from hitting the sides of it ::)

The front bar still in one piece, a bit over 1 year ago. (standard everything)

and i was under the car a few weeks before we found it changing the oil and didnt see any thing

funny enough it let go driving into the mechanics with the mechanic in the passenger seat discussing some thing else not related

Paul, I didnt buy a kit... I sourced all the bits by myself.

I also saved heaps by fitting it myself, and by searching for the right parts at the right price... pretty much ebay is your best friend.

I did all the cooling system with only $800 (cooler, alloy bends, clamps, silicone hoses, etc)

I got the cooler from JustJap (ebay) and the bends from Performanceoz (ebay), the rest is all from Rocket Industries.

Thought it would take me 2 days, but no way... took me 2 days for the piping/cooler, 2 days for the turbo and another 2 days to get everything to look pretty (gauges, etc)

Anyway, its all done ... and its only boosting 4psi, but still, nice difference. ;D

There is some smoke on hard take off, but probably just fuel set a little too high, even though the pyro has only reached 500c (at the manifold)

Some might not like it though... as for been in "3 loops bullbar" territory. ::)

As for the springs, I still have the 4" springs that I got last year... but now with all the new weight, the front end has dropped atleast an inch... so thinking now of going 6" all around... but hey, just found out that kingsprings dont come in 6".

It ended up all bent and twisted and they still expected me to wash it up (yeah right) so they could sell it again... WTF

Anyway... this pic came from the 1st winch job I did with the bar.

Only problem, it pulls a little to the left, but it was doing it before the 5link anyway.

I reckon it couldve cost up to $1500, but had links, bushes and lotsa stuff hanging around, so all up spent around 500 including some tools.

I cant compare with xlink (ive never personally seen one) but we all have seen crankys setup and it also works very well.

I didnt do an xlink cause I am still not convinced about the strenght on the centre pivot sleeve/bush. just my 2c though.

Sick of dragging the lower links over rocks too often, so put them over the tierod, clearance is heaps better now.

PS.The diff end is still running the factory brackets... seeing that the 5link works really well and stable, eventually i might just cut the brackets off, and make up new brackets for the diff and possibly making two new "no bends" lower links...

Geez, it took me a while to find my thread lol...

Anyway, thought id post up now that i have just fitted the rear e-locker.

Not much to say here just that I got a complete rear diff (housing, axles, e-locker 3rd, hubs, etc) and made my own control circuit which allows me to use a factory dash switch and can also use the lock indicator lamps that are already in the dash board. Even though the diff was complete, I still used my own hubs, brake rotors and calipers, cause they have been serviced not long ago.

Some pics,

I have front and rear air locks in my 80 and have hooked the dash's factory lock lights up so they work with them. Its was as easy as using 2 relays as the dash needs the earth switched where as the air locks switch the active.

Basically, I am trying to get rid of all the piping on top of the engine to cut down turbo lag a bit. Some people suggest running both pipes on the drivers side, but you cant.. without hacking into panels anyway.

UDM, sorry to hear about your bad luck with your bus. especially after all the work you put into it. I know what it feels like to lose your vehicle. recently sunk my Nissan hence recently bought my 80 to replace it
BTW if it's still valid, I have an 80 series RV. The body's are exactly the same as GXL minus the flares. Interior wise, no leccy windows and mirrors but the trim material and carpet etc is the same as GXL It has the same seating arrangement and it has the subtank and altimeter in the roof too. In fact I reckon the wiring is all there to GXL spec as well as I have a few dormant connectors in the kick panel for the windows and mirrors.
I have heard there is an 80 getting pulled down at the wrecker near me which I'm going to check out this week. if the body is any good I'll let you know..
