Just a few pics as it is so far
I got a list of 23 things to 'workout' from the engineer. Before I could take it back for a retest, so it was time to get to work.
The list is:
1.Front shackles not correct for spring width and are distorted. The plates require straightening amd a spacer adding
2.Front bumpstops require extending to suit the suspension lift
3.L/H/R brake pipe vibrating against lift block
4.Rear of springs on towbar when suspension operates
5.Front torque rod incorrectly designed and worn
6.Front torque rod mounting on chassis is distorted and badly cracked
7.Front lower shock absorber lower bushes are worn and R/H shock badly damaged
8.L/H/F brake hose fouling on shock absorber
9.Steering drag link lower ball joint requires adlusting and lubricating
10.Modified steering shaft requires removing for further inspection as its quality is suspect and it binds on the firewall
11.The hole in the firewall where the steering shaft exits must be sealed
12.Sever lateral movement of the front diff is evident
13. Steering arms foul on transmission cooler lines on both locks
14. Steering lock stop on L/H/F requires adjusting to correctly contact on lock
15.Front tailshaft does not have enough yoke slide and is bottoming out when suspension compresses
16.The rear tailshaft is contacting on the fuel tank
17.Tray support to chassis at wheel arch area are missing
18.Handbrake cable from body to rear diff housing is too short and is stressed when suspension extends
19.8'' guard infill is required and front mudflaps
20.Gear selector must have a quadrant showing which gear is selected and nust be illuminated
21.Correct speedo inaccuracy reads slow by 20%
22.Rear brake variable pressure valve not operating23. The vehicle failed the handling and braking tests and is very unstable when brakes are applied. This will need to be addressed when repairs are being carried out.
Ouch >:( I wasnt very happy when I heard this because the vehicle was engineered in NSW as it was but oh well.
I realise most of the problems are small and have so far fixed 22 (the red ones) I always forget to take my camera into the shed with me so there are not alot of pics of the proccess so far but I will take more as I progress.
And to think I could have just re-registered it in NSW :P
Cutting holes in the bullbar to fit low beams that comply with ADR's. Got the lights from a CBR 250 RR, they are the only headlight that would fit in the ARB bar

In the ACT mate, as for the things that have been done (I didnt do them) 8'' suspension lift, 3'' bodylift, Tyres are 35'' BFG muddies, Rear diff is open 40 series, 3.8 V6, TH700 auto....list goes on :P
As you can tell from the list, the original workmanship was
s#%t. So basically im just redoing everything as I go (budget permitting)

Absolutley.....I totally agree. Seeing it was registered in NSW when I bought it, I figured it would pass here. How wrong was I :o
sounds like a dodgy engineer to me :o
I would suggest no one should go to this engineer but there is no point as he died a while back :-\ I rang him to ask some questions when I found this out.
Damn, a 4" bodylift :o :o :o
The lateral movement in your front axle should be fixed now with the new ladder bar and bushes etc though so there is another job off ya list ;D ;D
Sorry bout the size of the pics but cant seem to resize them ???
Anyways, you can see the home made tray supports in the back and the mudflaps and bracket (also home made) Got 2sq metres of chequerplate style rubber for $50 from Clark rubber. It should've been $160 ;D
I also took off the tow bar cause the springs were hitting it. Fabricated 2 25mm spacers to put between the chassis rails and the tow bar. I cut the towbar on bothsides of the hitch to ensure it stayed in the centre. Then welded in 2 50x75mm box section on both sides. This gives the springs plenty of room now.

Before the mudflaps were made up. Wouldve hated to travel behind this in the wet >:( !
The pictures were bigger than that before ???
Here im trying to show what gear the shifter is in and then illuminate it. I picked up a console from a commodore but it didnt really work. Then I cut it up and tried again using the white bit and that didnt really work either. So im open to suggestions...

nice lux mate!! i see its keeping u busy then. do you know what rancho shocks they are? and how do you find them? as i am interested in them.

p.s. keep it coming im enjoying reading this
Fitted a new steering shaft yesterday. I used the 75mm snake racing extension and after a bit of farting around in the snow it worked out well. Except it (the shaft) still contacts the firewall.
Does anyone know why this is ? I thought it was just happening because the old one was bent. My chassis is twisted, could this possibly have an effect ???
I will get some pictures later, I really need to invest in a digital camera. Going backwards and forwards from the photo shop is getting annoying
After taking it for a drive I found it steered like a shopping trolly with the new steering shaft.
P.S please forgive my dodgy photography :-\
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/226095826-023_20.jpg
This shaft was off an SR5 that has a rubber joint, it was under enormous stress from steering the 35's. So I cut the original shaft (which has a slip yoke) and welded it properly. So turns out I didnt need the Snake extension, there goes $150 :P
Now it looks like this and steers much better.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/226095826-007_4.jpg
The shaft was still hitting the firewall so I cut a new hole, fabricated a new seal and thats another thing off the list.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/226095826-006_3.jpg
This is a 25mm spacer that I made to stop the springs hitting the tow bar.

have you thought of using a b&m shifter they display what gear you are in aswell that way you can just box the tras tunnel and mount the shifter
This way works, it doesnt look great but it still does the job.
I took this tonight, fairly bright I think. I just need to adjust them now and then its onto the next job. Sooooo close to getting back out in the bush !

I went to a 4x4 shop today and was told that they wont touch my Hilux cause it has a 4'' lift ??? The guy said it is unregisterable and there is nothing they can do to give the vehicle more stability.
Pffffft !
I will get it done even if no one in town wants to help.
What do you guys think, is a four inch lift too big ? And what can I do to stabilize the big black beast ???
are we talking body or suspension? i think 4" suspension is fine but imo 2" body should be the limit due to stresses on bolts etc :-X
Yeah i think that a 4'' body lift is way to much :-X
that might have a reason
Talking about suspension lift.
The front has a 3'' crossmember welded under the chassis and the back has 4'' lift blocks under the springs. The springs arent standard but I dont know how big they are.
Body lift is actually 3'' not 4'' :P I cant read a tape measure ::)

Holy cow, 4" lift blocks in the rear are shocking! That must give you bad axle tramp unless you don't have any HP to speak of? Why do you need 7" of lift anyway? It makes it less offroad worthy let alone on the road. Your centre of gravity is so high now and even your roll centre in the rear is 7" higher than the front compared to stock due to the front being lowered 3" but the rear being raised 4"! ( remember roll centre is wear your suspension leans through when cornering etc and is not the centre of gravity ). You should at least get rid of the blocks and lower the spring mounts on the chassis the same amount ( 3" ) as the front to keep the correct relationship. See my site on how I did this on mine and what it all means. Also you have not increased you track enough to keep stability on or off road as you should increase it at least the same as you go up, but to keep the same as stock you must increase you track by twice your lift height according to Land Rover engineers who tested it on a side tilting bed. Remember to get the engineers approval for all this and discuss it with them before doing any thing.

Im gonna try getting it through as it is. (even if it has a high centre of gravity) Then if it doesnt go well offroad, I will do what I have to do to improve its ability. Im not gonna spend all my time in the shed pulling it apart, otherwise I will never get it on the road.
What you say does make sense though and I will get it right next time ;D

Funny you should ask actually ! He tried once but coat hangered himself and landed on his back ;D Looked pretty funny :D Now I have to pick him up.
I just got my front driveshaft back from M&A Engineering. It had to be lengthened 25mm to stop it bottoming out when the suspension is compressed.
But it looks a little bit long :(

I also ordered a speedo correction unit from Marks 4WD, so after that, its back to the engineer for a retest.

I think you mean shortened 25 mm if it is running out of slip at fulll compression. Strange as most people have to extend their driveshafts when lifted high? Did you drop the bumpstops at all as this would stop the driveshaft running out of compression and also make the vehicle safer on the road should you need to do any high speed direction changes. You have to check with your engineer but some states will not allow you to increase the up travel by more than a 1/3 of what it is stock from memory for that reason.

Ummm yeh shortened, im a dumbass ::) I did extend the bumpstops, but only cause the engineer said so. I didnt know it had added benefits.

Just hope now that your slip yoke does not run out of engagement now on full dropp and drop out onto the road at full extension! I know of someone killed when their rear one did that after getting air over a dune and it pole vauled him onto his roof after digging into the ground! Was some one close to a good friend of mine too.
Good luck when you get it re checked...

Please keep us up to date.
Nothing exciting has happened yet, im still waiting on getting my speedo recalibration unit back from Marks 4WD. I got a custom one with 20% reduction, but its not enough ::) I need one that has 33% reduction. So I should have it (Hilux) back to the engineer by next Friday
Ok, I took the Hilux to the engineer today and got another list >:(
1.Vehicle must not start in drive. Must start in neutral and park only.
2.Fit safety chains to front mudflaps to prevent contact with tyres
3.Tray supports to chassis at rear wheel arch area are still missing
4.Front of front spring shackle to spring alignment not correct (thrusting to one side)
5.Front of rear spring shackle to spring alignment not correct (thrusting to one side)
6.R/H/R bump stop rubber missing
7.Reverse lamp must be fitted and operational
8.Oil leaks at swivel hub area excessive
9.Drag link to 3rdarm joint requires adjusting
10.The front to rear brake bias is incorrect and locks the rear brakes during testing
11.The rear brake pressure limit valve is leaking
12.An alignment and operational fault exists in the front suspension and steering causing the R/H/F springs to thrust forward and aft on steering directional changes. We suspect poor operating angle of the front diff stabilizer bar may be responsible and will require remounting.
13.The rear guard infill should be more ridgid.
General: The vehicle has failed the handling and stability and braking tests. This is due to many factors including some of the rejections listed above. The tests will have to be redone when you are satisfied the vehicle is suitable. The vehicle centre of gravity accompanied with the tyre wall height and large contact pattern is of concern when it comes to meeting the handling criteria.
Most of the things on the new list are easy to fix but it pisses me off that the engineer didnt pickup on them the first time round.
I'll give it another 6 months now ::)

Stock lux's dont have chains on teh front flaps... most of us fit them to stop the buggers getting ripped off when you reverse up ledges- cos at $100 a pot for genuine its a bit of an expensive hobby!
Do engineers give you a bill everytime you get the car checked or is it just a one time charge? Would think around $500 each visit, am I right?

He has already told you the outcome.........you need a different engineer.........or an NSW buyer who doesn't come to this Forum.
The BEST of luck.......you WILL need it!
fully agree with blu they are not going to pass it because they deem it unsafe and just to throw caution to the wind i agree with them its too high for the size of the truck if you want to use it so bad and its sending you broke fit 33s and lower it a couple of inches it would go a long way to getting it passed ;)

When i had to take a old escort i had over the pits here in SA they failed it the first time and said the second time that all they would check is what they found in the first inspection so you wouldn't have to worry bout them finding more stuff like they did with you!

I made the front guards out of perspex so it wouldnt touch the tyres. If I push them forwards they just touch but in a real life situation I would have to be doing 200km/h in reverse !
Changing to another engineer no would just be silly.

ahhh to be young and in love again. Good luck with your mission B-Lux. I'm no teenage girl and I don't back up, but I'm still impressed by 7". :o
I had a 86 Dual Cab with a VN V6 in it, I got rid of it after destroying 3 gearboxes in 3 months and pouring lots of cash into it. I can at least say you've got it right having the auto in it. You shouldn't have the same prob! It'll be worth it once you've got it done. A set of extactors and 2-1/2" system on it will make a huuuge difference, it did on mine. But i guess you've got a lot more important things in the eye of the engineer to be worrying about for now...Good luck with it.
Hi,
I have to admit it sounds like the old RTA pits if they didn't want you on the road they just kept on picking things the only way around them is to comply..give them there hour of power..find the australian standard on this and comply they cant knock you back.Anyway good luck.

What happened was...I had it jacked up in the centre under the towbar....took the lift blocks out.....then went to lower it down again but I had one too many pieces of timber under the jack....so I jacked it up again and put timber blocks between the springs and the axle...then the jack broke...so I shoved another one on the blocks...jacked it up to get the other jack out...and the whole truck went over...But no harm was done...all good fun too ;D

did the car port catch it on its way over
It didnt get quite that far...luckily :P
Are u puttin the lux bac to std or sumthing???
It all depends on if it passes this time. I will see what happens.
So I took the Hilux to the engineer today.
List No.3 :P
1. Mudflaps are too short (my bad, I didnt measure properly)
2. Dropped draglink needs to be replaced with a standard one (Luckily I have one)
3. New front springs (the second hand ones I put on werent good enough)
4. New brake proportional valve
So I said bugger it, do it yourself >:(
Now it cant fail because he is doing the work, even if I have to pay a little extra for the labour.
So give it a week and another handfull of cash and it should be right :)

man you've had to go through some sh!t to get this thing engineered. I would have gotten fed up along time ago and gone to a different engineer.
Then again 4" bodylift is a bit over the top.. :o
Spewin, it looked pretty farkin awesome before... Lookin at it, it almost made me want a toyota. Practically though, im glad i came to my senses ;D

At least now the truck should be a bit safer to work on without the need for all those blocks! Hey, and now your tyres will look a lot bigger too with less lift. I glad to see the list is getting shorter now and it will all soon be over. ;)

I know it willl be a better 4WD on and off road now that it is lower...but you shoulda seen it in the flesh before I took the blocks out

Yeeeha.
Looks like you are on your way (the long way) to wheeling legally again. You will have to update with before and after pics. (Just for a laugh)
I'm guessing that the original engineer's first name started with a D and his last with an R.

good luck mate..
Just got word from the engineer that the draglink I gave him wont fit. But he ordered another one and once he puts it on thats it...all done !!
Dunno how much its gonna cost this time :P
Now I just have to hope the RTA office at Dickson will pass it.
if the engineer signs off the work you shouldn't have any probs so does this mean it will be getting dirty this weekend

You would think this would be the case but ACT rego has a habit of taking the liberty of contradicting engineers. But on the other hand the engineer that B lux is using has a good rep with the RTA so you should go through fairly easy. I would suggest taking your old man or someone a bit more mature age to drive it over for you as they like to give young blokes a hard time.
Good luck
Well, I hope to get it dirty as im going to Yarrangobilly Caves this weekend....Yeh, my Dad will be taking it ;)
I'm guessing that the original engineer's first name started with a D and his last with an R.
Yeh, thats right...Dodgy McRoberts.
He was the original engineer of CanberraMav's 4b also....so im not the only one who had to go through some s**t to get this far.
I now have a fully engineered HiLux :D :D I have it booked in for a rego inspection next thursday, but chances are I could get in this thursday (fingers crossed)
Mmmmm, I can almost taste the mud ;D

But he kept my dropped draglink and front springs the theif ! I cant get em back till mid Jan as he has closed down >:(
Here is a little 'list of things' to get, that I knocked up
UHF Radio
High lift Jack

Congrats on getting it engineered!
Can't wait to see some pics of the mighty lux in action.

I will get some pics up when I get my camera back.

personally I reckon it looks better at that height than in the photos in your sig line. How did it go did it live up to your expectations ;)
You gotta be real happy of gettin it dirty again (doesnīt look too good in shinny boots anyway ;) ) and cause ya got ya camera back :D woohoo
What size are those bfgs? 35s? They look big now.
Ps. whats with the open bonnet? breakin things already?
I think it looks better now too...but dont tell anyone ;) It went really well, considering both diffs are open and I was runnng 35psi.
It has the turning circle of a bus and then theres the over heating thing...but theyre my only complaints...for now
Yeah, 35's...I dunno what to get next
The bonnet was open cause it over heated...I just let it sit for 10 min and it was fine.
Getting a new fuel pump soon and Im going diff shopping tomorrow.
Not good about it overheating again, but i'm sure you'll get it sorted, just might take a while. I wouldn't be going any bigger than 35's do they scrub at all if so how much. Did you decide to go another 40 diff or you changing it to something else
Nah it only overheated once...it stalled the second time :P
Not gonna go bigger than 35, but dont know whether to get Claws, MT/R's or BFG muddies again...But they dont scrub at all.
And another 40 series diff...no locker...yet ;)
If you are doing heaps of mud playing go the radial claws, they are awesome in the mud, otherwise I prefer my MTRs everywhere else to the claws.
It is rarely muddy here but when it is...you NEED good tyres. I like the MT/R's on road, but they might not have an open enough tread for the mud.
Do your MT/R's still perform well in the mud ?
Yeh their still good in mud but they are no claw thats all, but as I said imo they are a better tyre everywhere else.

Lookin' the goods now bud, a little bit more stable to I'd imagine. Man those 35's look huge under there - yay ;D. Just make sure you check the treads for small animals when you park up at night ;)
You dont want to come out in the morning a find an endangered hairy nosed big breasted bed thrasher stuck in there ;D
My fuel pump was from a VL...got a new one...and gonna get my diff done next week...I'll let them (southern differentials) see what needs to be done...I could just get away with new gears, hopefully.
My left rear wheel locks up when I brake, not all the time, just when I put on a bit more pressure, so gotta get that looked at too.
Knowing my luck, something else will probably brake...but if nothing does its time for a new UHF :D

Good to see you back behind the wheel again B-Lux. I have got both Claws & MTR's. Claws are better offroad overall but longevity is a real problem plus they are terrible on road. My MTR's are the best of both worlds the only area where the MTR's fall way behind the Claws is in heavy mud only.
Once again well done !!

That looks awesome. You have done well, a top looking rig B-lux. I hope the over heating is sorted for you soon ;)
Thanks Boxa, will get it sorted out when money permits...you know how it is ;)
I drove it in the rain for the first time today...yes, it doesnt rain too much here. It was a bit scarey :o Nearly lost it a couple of times...I had an empty tray which didnt help. So I have to get my brakes looked at really soon.

Probably would have been...but it wasnt to hard to match the body mounts.
What happened was...the original body got flattened in a rollover...so on went a newer body.
I got my diff put in today...naturally it ended up costing me over twice what I thought :'(
So now thats out of the way I have a small list of other things to take care of:
Put in new fuel pump along with filter and lift pump.
New front bearings
Fix my Speedo re-calibration unit
Fix my brakes
Get a bigger radiator with twin thermo fans

The 4x4 club Craig is in is the same one that I am in. Its called C.O.R (Canberra off Roaders). Its in its final stages and will be up and running soon.
The club is just a bunch of us who are mates that needed a club name to go under to enter competitions etc. It is invite only as we are trying to keep membership at around 20-25 people. Could prob get you in if you were keen to do comps etc.

Well THIS accessory is 18 yrs old (not quite new) but would still fit in a recovery box I think ;D
I have been trying to save some money so I can buy a new motorbike...but of course I spend it on this instead :P
I was coming home today and the brakes locked up, the back end came out and then I over corrected, did a 360, went up and over the median strip and onto the other side of the road (3 lane highway) :-[ But miraculously I didnt hit anyone.
So I got home and took off the front wheels to find my discs are warped and grooved to buggery. I dont know if this is the cause of the lock up (it has happened before) but now im up for new brakes, and my tyres are even more worn >:(
Sheit. :o Nice save Benny. And very lucky too ;)
You're not wrong.
Turns out 3 of the pistons in the calipers were seized, so its off the road for a bit till I can get them.
Hopefully no more lockups after that !

very close call mate... did it feel like flipping? always wanted to hand brake turn the lux hahaha. do you know how the rotors warped in the first place?
It felt very stable actually despite the spinning around.
But I dunno about the brakes :-\
I was wondering how to weigh the back of my Lux down a bit, with out taking up much room, as I dont usually have much in the tray.
So I decided on concrete (a block 1500mmx500mmx150mm weighs about 300kg) I was going to make my own mould ou of ply.
But then I thought I could kill two birds with one stone, buy a toolbox (dont have one yet) and fill the bottom with concrete.
So I got a Kingchrome unit
(which weighs 40kg alone) that measures 1200mmx440mmx330mm.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/toolbox002.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/toolbox001.jpg
So now im going to make a mould that measures 1200mmx440mmx100mm fill it with concrete, which will weigh about 120kg. Then cut it into 4 pieces so I can lift the blocks in and out with out any hassle.
This will give me a better ride and help stop my brakes locking up.
CanberraMav
25-02-2006, 03:53 PM
Dont fill it with concrete ??? :'(
Fill it with recovery gear, tools etc
Only a quarter of the toolbox will have concrete in it, but im not pouring it straight in there ;) And I will still have enough room for tools and the like, so its ok.
Gojeep
25-02-2006, 10:03 PM
Dont put concrete in there!! Try removing a leaf or two first and the brackes are only locking up because the load or brake bias valve must not be setup correctly if it is connected still at all? Have you still got the right length rod attached to the valve which regulates how much rear brake bias you have according to your load?
jlux3012
26-02-2006, 12:54 PM
I agree with GoJeep, sounds like something isnt right with your brakes, what your doing might only result in a bandaid fix.
Ok, im not taking out a leaf or two because I DO carry heavy loads, just not that often.
The brake bias valve is set up properly and has been adjusted to suit the lift. The brake bias is 70% front 30% rear. But it should be 90% 10% when my tray is empty, taking into account the V6 engine, 86 front end and the overall height of the vehicle.
To get it right, I would have to re-calibrate the master cylinder OR put some weight in the back. I choose option B.
Since getting new pistons, I have done emergency stops in all speed zones and the brakes have not locked up.
I took the Lux offroad and found the ride very good, now that I have the toolbox in the back. Yeh, im not going to put the concrete in it anymore...the few tools that I have were heavy enough ;)

I wanted to see if taking the torque rod out would effect the turning circle. So I took it out on the weekend and found the steering felt lighter but the car also jumped around a lot more on the rough (bitumen) surfaces. But turning circle still the same.
So while its disconnected I am going to remount it so it sits level (like stock) and put in a flex type bush. Hard to explain, but I will post pics when its done.
Now that the lift blocks are out, I notice the rear sits about 2 1/2" lower than the front. So on the weekend I am going to grind off the rear spring hangers and move them further back on the chassis so the shackle sits where it should. Hopefully the shocks wont run out of travel :P
Then once thats sorted its time for a tune up. I replaced the fuel pump 4 months ago added a fuel filter before the pump to stop any crap getting in there and replaced the one after the pump. But now its making a lot of noise again. Plus there is a leak that I just cant find, not to mention the strange noises and lack of power. So I will let the professionals sort it out. Hope its nothing serious :-[
It's bound to keep you busy Benny ;)
You're not wrong Boxa
I spoke to Shaun from ABT (Aussie Boys Toys) today about a high steer kit. But it doesnt look like its going to fit, the sump from the V6 sits right in the way ::) But when money permits, im looking at a whole new suspension setup. More lift, more flex and coils :D
This is where the shackle sat before

How did your mates lux come up with the sky jacker lift? I'm concidering doin it and would love some opinion if it's worth it. Pics??? ;D
It looks tough 8) But is still no match for a solid axle.
It rides really well (comfortable) on and off road.
I dont have any pics of it...yet ;)
My HiLux is forsale. Im in no hurry, but for the right price... ;)

Ouch!
Hey B-Lux, you didn't forget "protection" did you? ;D
I towed my bike to the RTA today to get inspected, and they defected me ! Not the bike (thats a different story) but my Hilux !
I explained to them that I used the engineer they recommended and they passed it only 8 months ago. But they decided to defect it anyway.
Gained a bike (just) but lost a 4X4.
That is some bad news Benny. What was there issue this time???

wtf, no way,
what did they have an issue with this time..
I would have thought if it was engineered they couldnt do that :-\ :-\
Mick.

Thats no good Benny. :'(
One minute they say it's ok the next they change their minds. The RTA down your way sound like a bunch of tossers that need a boot up the ass. >:(
I hope it's nothing serious and you get it sorted out mate.
Cheers Mick.

Yer mate, that sucks >:(
What did they defect it for??
It has all been fixed up. No mudflaps, that was the issue. When I went 4WDriving on the weekend they got ripped off and I didnt realise till I got home. I was going to make some new ones on the tuesday regardless, but they got me first. They also tried to get me for no front mudflaps, I told the guy it didnt have any when they passed it the first time. The best part is, they were going over the whole car trying to find something else but they couldnt.

I take it by the stickers that your truck was an ex Offroad Industries modified vehicle???
I want to take that sticker off, but im afraid it will take the paint off with it. Im not sure if ORI originally did the work, Thats what someone else said too.

I just ask cos we have fixed quite a few vehicles that were modified by the fore mentioned workshop. Just basically fixed up bodgy engineering/remake stuff that was clearly not up to scratch.
Then theres a good chance it was them. It had terrible workmanship when I first got it. And I've only fixed half of it so far ::)
A while ago the HiLux kept stalling because the fuel pump was struggling and it was incredibly noisy. So I got a new one and its starting to get noisy again.
So I decided it was time to fix it. My old man got two wave guides from commercial microwaves and is welding them together to create a surge tank. Then I have to get a lift pump and some hose and see how it runs then.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/ben003.jpg
Bit of an update, the surge tank is now in. The setup works really well, the tank holds about 5L and looks like this. All up it cost me $213, (the holly pump was $200) The wave guides are are worth $400, so thats not too bad And somehow I am now getting 12.5L/100km where as before I was getting 17+L/100km :D http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/bennylangers/Image006.jpg?t=1166770362

And my christmas present to me !! New Claws :D

I would suggest no one should go to this engineer but there is no point as he died a while back :-\ I rang him to ask some questions when I found this out.
This is a potentially a problem for me, that same guy previous certified my Lux's earlier mods (coil conversion, a-frame, 35's) so it's all going to get scruitinsed very carefully when it is presented to someone (not sure who) for engineering in Jan/Feb.

i'd probally cable tie that fuel line up or someting before it gets snaged and make a stone guard for that fuel pump.
looks sweet though.
have you fixed overheating probs and how because i've got a 90 single cab lux with a series 2 commo and t700 box and can't stop from hitting 140c on the highway and boiling on the beach with twin 14'' davie craig thermos and shroud checked everything as far as flow and blockages bought radiator recommended for conversion and everything, givin up on it know and just give it a hiding cause bought 93 dualcab lux and dropping lexus v8 in with manual and ALLY radiator ordered pro rock kit stage 3 from sanke racing and 2'' body lift should be her just after new year.
Also i have blown up 3 t700 doing things from clutch packs 2 making 1 way bearings turn inside out and thats with stage 2 shift kit in it and v8 internals. spent $2200 on the last rebuild 8 months ago so far so good.
Wow Benny, looking sexy with the claws. I have never seen a fuel setup like you have in a private vehicle before. Heavy machinery yeah, but not in a passenger vehicle. Nice job with it.

Yeh, I will make a bracket to mount the hose up out of harms way. I think I might make a guard for the whole setup now that you mention it. As for the overheating, mine only does it crawling up hills on 30c+ days. I was thinking twin thermo fans and a bigger radiator. So if that doesnt work, I dunno  Mine hasnt been offroad for a while and wont be again until I get a new front diff. I will have a look around the wreckers cause I dont want another Hilux diff.
Your Lux sounds sweet, should be good when its done.

Thanks man, if it wasnt for my dad finding those wave guides I wouldnt have bothered.

bj did ur old forum name used to be B-Lux?
bj did ur old forum name used to be B-Lux?
Hey, yeh used to be, I was going to sell the lux it and get a cruiser so I changed my login name.
I went down to Murramarang for a week over new years, and the steering was really vague and skitish on the kings highway going down, I almost lost it at least four times  So I am going to get a high steer kit as soon as I can, I also need a new front diff and eventually I was going to get a coil conversion done. So I am now thinking I might do it all at once if the bank lets me.
Also, the claws scrub, so much more tread than my old BFG's, so im going to get out the grinder to cut the body back but I dont know what to do about the flares as they are fibreglass
Mick.

That looks awesome with the claws on it Benny. She should flex well with the coil conversion too.
Cheers Mick.

I see you have blanked the recent number plate. Maybe it would be a good idea to go back and blank the earlier pics. I know it has got through the RTA this time but you don't want anyone complaining after reading this thread.
It would be a hassle having the RTA wanting to inspect it again.
