View Full Version : Progressive build on BJ40
Well guys I picked this 40 up for $500 and almost sold it after a few engine woes. I wasn't looking for a project but stumbled across it at a garage sale...
HOLD UP PEOPLE
What is it with my missus and garage sales, REALLY :-\. She goes out and picks up a boot full of crap then comes home proudly showing off this boot full of twice recycled after the op-shop crapola. I tell her that this festering pile of steaming garbage is both useless and offensive to even have sitting on our property, to which she normally replies...... "But this was only $5 and that was only $2". ARGHHHHHHHH
Well I guess it was time for some payback. I grabbed Jess and the local Herald, snatched the car keys and told her we were going garage saleing ;D ;D ;D. Little did she know that I wanted to go to a sale later that had both a BJ40 and a Mitcubishi 4WD ute advertised(I was just going to see if he had any suitable spares for my hilux).
So we go to a few garage sales and I both deny her of buying an edge trimmer(more work for me) and then try to convince her to buy an entertainment unit off and old couple who are moving into a unit(this thing was an absolute pos), I told her that the first thing we would be doing (and I exclamated the WE) is stripping it back and painting it black ;D ;D ;D.
Anyway, as hard as I tried I couldn't get a rise out of her.
OFF TO THE TENDER CENTRE WE GO ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
So I see this miniture motor bike, not like the lil ones you see on ebay NOOOO this one would be too small for a clown to sit on ;), I then grab a tender sheet and immediately put $100 on the bike, LMAO ;D. We see many other things including a black entertainment unit and I try my best to convince her we need it ;D though in the end I didn't even want it cause it was almost ready to collapse and I cbf putting it in the bin :o.
Anyway now to get to the point I guess ;)
We went to another garage sale out at medowie and I bought a 1979 BJ40 ;D ;D ;D
Time to get serious I guess eh.
Here are a few pics from when I checked it out.

The vehicle is straight and the interior is unbeleivable for its age, my first impression was that this vehicle has once been looked after very well and has been neglected for a while(thus the rust).
I bought it with the engine not in a running condition on the pre-requisite that if I couldn't get it running to a level satisfactory for a blue slip I would sell it. Well I put a thread up offering to sell it for $1000 after having a day of woes with it and was even knocked for putting that price on a 40 that wasn't running.
Patience paid off in the end. I had picked the vehicle up saturday, had a diesel machanic around on sunday with no luck and had it semi-running on monday though with a few problems. It seemed that the engine would start and rev freely with the key held in the start position but die when the key was released. This problem turned out to be linked to the electric motor that shuts the injector pump off and is still to be repaired by an auto electrician friend(I just disconnected it for the time being).
So now we had a running engine that was pissing oil out of the breather pipe(think hose pressure) and didn't know exactly why this was happening and after a few suggestions decided to flush the old oil with diesel(oil was like grease literally). We removed more oil than we put in diesel via the breather come drain pipe and still no luck. That was until we re-checked the dip-stick and found that it still had 18ltrs of oil in the sump :o :o :o :o
Turns out that the grease like oil in the sump wasn't showing a reading at all and Im guessing that someone before has thought of just adding oil etc.
We drained all the now thinned oil out of it and replaced with some cheap Bi-lo oil for the time being.
HEY PRESTO, BLOODY BRILLIANT ENGINE ;)
It takes a few minutes to warm up but it idles and runs quietly, revs freely and blows less smoke than any Nissan patrol Ive seen running around ;D
Next up was the seized wheel.
Once we had everything running fine we thought we would go for a cruise down the driveway and see if it would push this wheel around. It didn't, instead we ended up returning in reverse skidding a tyre up a shared rental driveway :( :(
No problem, Pagey went and grabbed a wheel bearing yesty and we were into it after work. I got busy on the phone for a while and Ben pulls the wheel off only to find that it was dragging very badly on the tie-rod end. I grabbed another rim with a different offset and we bolted it on.
THE 40 RUNS AND DRIVES ;D ;D
So here is the deal guys.
Firstly the whole body is coming off for a blast, weld and paint then being refitted and a few minor things like wiring tweaked for rego(I will never mod a truck out of rego again, you can't test things legally)
Wider diffs, gearing, lockers and a V8 with an auto attached very soon after rego though we are undecided 8) 8)
We need advice, ideas and input.
I had my eyes on a 1UZFE for its price, injection, strength and the fact thats its toyota (though thats not important) 'cept Marks adaptors doesn't have any adaptors for it and the 100 series box that bolts up to it is going to cost more than the engine so this is pretty much out of merit to us now.
This afternoon I took all the front panels off except the D/S guard. We will definately be needing a new bonnet and maybe some new guards though I will blast the guards to see exactly what we are in for.
I plan on keeping you guys up to date on cost aswell since the camel project in the mag was pretty simply bolt on extras and this to me will show the true costs involved in building up a project truck for the average Joe who doesn't have a spare 50K sitting in his bank account ;)

Is the lux on the road now?

Is the lux on the road now?
Lux is actually for sale Paul, I have chosen to leave it unregistered and supply an engineering certificate and blueslip to the buyer just incase it sells interstate etc. It has passed both ;)

Fair enough
You love the buildup stage dont you, whatever you can do to keep that "web wheeler" title ;D ;D
Im guessing the lux is gonna pay for your engine, are you gonna do tyres and everything in one hit?

I probably could but apparently between some states rego gets basically cancelled so it would be a waste of my $$$, I would have put it for sale for a couple of grand more if it was regoed so I figure who ever buys its will get a better deal anyway. As I said Pat its engineered and blue slipped so who ever buys it will get a full 12 months rego too(they pay). This may be a turn off for people looking to buy but I guess atleast I wont get any tyre kickers ;D ;D

As said, I have a partner in crime whom you have met. Ben has wanted a project on the side sinceI have known him and I figured since he was so good as to offer his services(he has his work cut out for him) it was only fair to tell him it was half his, you shoulda seen the smile on his face when I offered it ;D GOLD
So the mods are half each way which means we both get our bang for buck. Ben has a few goodies that might come in handy depending on which direction we take the diff swap etc but either way there is a set of almost new 35" STT's that we can use if we get rims(I guess I better buy them considering the tyres are his).
This is basically going to be a weekend truck and a spare vehicle, we both have daily drivers.
I will only give up my web wheeler status if you give me another title of my choice when I think of one ;D ;D

One thing has always been on my mind with 40s is wat are those large bracket/holder thingies built into the back bumper for? They only seem to be on 40s. Any ideas?

Like sands through the hourglass etc..........
I feel another epic adventure coming up ;D
Good luck with it Craig.
have you lost the plot completely craig, you spent months being a web wheeler while you did the hilux, finally finished it. (it looked good too), then you sell it without even using it for any serious wheelin, all it needed was 2 lockers and it would of been a weapon. personally i couldnt put that much effort into building something then sell it without at least using it a few times. looks like your set to be a web wheeler for another 2 years while you build this thing up.
sure its a worthy project, but the lux just seems like a lot of wasted effort to me. each to their own though
You are welcome to buy it Mark'o, I lost interest months ago after I was screwed for $14,000 through a mechanic and the trouble he caused me. I guess it is funny that I now have it up to spec and maybe even a bit better and am selling it but I guess if you knew all the shit this fella caused me you would have a bad taste in your mouth too.
RED 60, Im not sure about the bars on the back but they certainly don't seem to serve any purpose apart from backing into Harold Scruby's Subaru Forester. They will be amongst the things stripped after rego(really if I smashed Harolds car I would want some marks to tell the story by ;D ;D).
Thanks for the replies guys
Paul, comps aren't a high priority atm. We are focused on getting it regoed and then wheeling it between mods to find the best combination and hardware. Competition has been mentioned but it would defeat half the purpose of this vehicle though we have mentioned having a crack after a fair bit of driver navi trips and getting a good system going(we don't listen to each others directions much ;D ;D). So I guess the long and short is yes and no :-\.
After all we are going to put plenty of time, money and effort into this build and don't plan on breaking it every weekend, though once again it is a play truck and we very well may decide to compete at some stage after a few mods.
I shall arrange the nekkid pics tonight for ya Haz, havent done anything else to it today though...
Simon, what trade do you have to offer :D
A random pic from when we got it home.

As promised Hazza :P

A month later and all the interior is out including guages, flooring and steering column etc.
I have just had good look under it to try and answer a question for someone and have found some pretty bad rust(read no steel left) on the centre crossmember that crosses the rear of the transfer case.
This is a bad sign for me, espescially considering Taziiy convince me not to take the body off.
I am going to have to have some words with Ben and see what he thinks.
I may part this thing out and we buy a different project :-\
gee thats not good at all :-\
but if you do end up parting it out ;D ;D ;)

Dont loose hope dude, either build a new tube and brase it to the chassie, orrrrr look for another chassie. ppl give em away, and im sure it would be piss easy to find another one (2-BIG?). Stick with it mate, dont get a Crotch rocket just yet :P

It is decied, its getting parted ;)
There is no point throwing all this work into a pre-historic creature that will need a huge engine and huge tyres with many more other expensive parts and goodies when I could power a newer zook with a smaller engine with cheaper tyres and parts thats cheaper to initially buy.
This thing at this point is worth a whole lot more $$$ to us in parts.
I like the kiss method and this vehicle is certainly not going to support that theory.
