Default Adobe Photoshop, How much to buy and from where?

Pretty much as the title says Who's got Adobe Photoshop? How much did it cost and where from? Or have you got a similar program just as good? I went looking on the Adobe website CS4 US$699!!! For a program! Could buy another computer for that!

Cheers

Check out ht.com.au (Computers, Displays, Networking, Storage, Printing & Ink, Accessories, Servers, Software, Communications) for pricing. If you have a student in the family, you might be able to get the student version which is a lot cheaper. Some of the Adobe studio bundles are good value.

Does it 100% HAVE to be photoshop?

Alot of people get photoshop because they know its the best and the professionals choice but they dont use 99.99% of its features.

There are free alternatives, some of them very indepth, some less advanced than photoshop but better than paint or something like that. IMO none of these are AS good as photoshop but the price is a major factor.

Also, there are other things to pay for which are cheaper.

Heres a few links...

Corel PaintShop Photo - Its not free, but its cheaper and quite advanced.

GIMP - 100% free, opensource. Its very advanced, capable of some good stuff, and if it does what you need, cant beat the price. There are even versions which are designed specifically to have a similiar layout to Adobe Photoshop!

www.paint.net - THIS IS NOT MICROSOFT PAINT. It is not nearly as advanced as the above, but still very capable, and also opensource and therefore 100% free. This is what I find myself using most of the time because its just easier and uses FAR less system resources. Adobe is a hell of a system resource hog.

A good website for you to use is alternativeto.net and the link to photoshop one is here. This site is user-edited and people add alternatives to variety of programs.

This lists the ones I have and others I havnt as well as information on cost (if any), program information, how many people "like" it and so on.

Check it out, hope it helps.

I just had a quick look on ebay plenty of Photoshop Programs available , CS-3 , CS-4 and Elements ect

I'm sure you could find something to suit you at a reasonable price

I use CS-3 , but like Gav said I probably only use 1% or less of its potential , but I'm picking up tips all the time and learning to use new tools .

If you are switched on to computers and a quick learner photoshop might be the best

x2, Gimp is very handy, with similar functions and tools to PS.

The next person to suggest any illegal means of getting licences material like programs will have a week on the sidelines. This forum does not condone the illegaldownloading of any material

I think gimp is a bit of an aquired taste... I dont find iether PS or the Gimp particularly intuitive.... if you are new to iether you have to search the menus a bit for what yr looking to use and figure out how to use it. But once you get used to it gimp is good! (this from someone who uses about that .01 percent that jacko was refering to!!) (edit: gavo sorry, not jacko...!)

Lightroom 2 from educationsoftware.com.au would be my choice.

Why do people buy $2,000 worth of camera, yet baulk at paying for editing software?

A lot of computer magazines give away full version CDs when a newer version comes out.

I;ve seen them with photoshop CS3, paintshop pro, dreamweaver....all kinds of cool programs, for the cost of a magazine.

Dunno whats available at the moment, but if you keep your eyes peeled you might spot something.

yup...totally agree.

Photoshop is good, but for editting photos, I wouldnt touch anything else but Lightroom. Unfortunately, the original post doesnt actually mention what he wants to do with it.

...fair point... but then why pay for software when free stuff like Gimp does the job? Put the money towards a new lens...!
