I done an oil change today and slightly overfilled it (old corolla) on purpose because it uses a little oil so basically being lazy.

when driving home from work (of course I didn't use your oil boss, I promise :-X) the oil light came on and stayed on??? So I pulled over and check the oil level thinking I had left the sump plug out or sumfin when I filled it but it was still at the same level ???

I have never known a oil light to come on when over-full.

I am thinking that I may have a blockage somewhere in the system or a dogey oil pump.

did the engine sound rattly? If you overfilled it the crank might be splashing the oil and frothing it up causing your problem. Could also be a dodgy sender unit or you might have bumped the wire on the sender and then when you were driving it fell off.

I was thinking of the sender, I also "borrowed" some de-greaser and the karcher and degreased it aswell/

I correct myself.... It does flash a little when pulling up steep hills so the sender idea is out ;D

sounds like your oil level might be a little too high. How much over is it

A little higher than I would normally be comfortable with but not enough that I would have thought it would have affected it drastically. I guess I will have to drain that bit out tomorrow arvo and hope it returns to normal. the car is actually running smoother than normally though.

Have you checked the oil pressure?
That should tell you if the sender is crook, or if there is a problem where the oil is not coming out of the oil pump properly due either to a blockage, or faulty pump.

i once accidently put about a litre too much oil in the hilux, i thought ahh itll be right, then headed up to stockton beach. on the beach i got stuck three quarters of the way up a near vertical dune, all of a sudden the motor revved out to about 4500rpm and put out a big plume of smoke, i shut it down immediately and just let it roll back down the dune, and then fired it up again, it was all ok, i can only assume that being on that angle with too much oil in the motor, somehow allowed oil in to the cylinder, im always very careful when refilling it now. does this theory make sense to any one, or could something else of caused it to rev out like that, its never done it again since. scared the crap out of me when it happened, it sounded like it was going to blow the head off the motor, it revved that hard and fast.

Mark, that sounds like dieseling to me and I dont know how you where able to shut it off if it happened that way.

todays report: Started the car without any probs this morning. Still running very well.

I was thinking this arvo that I may have a crook oil pump (as Bt said). I will monitor the heat guage and oil light for the mean time but I definately feel that there is something amiss so will be inspecting the oil pump very soon.

H&M, you sound so concerned!

what exactly is dieseling and what causes it, its never happened again since

What happened was that when on the near vertical face, the oil that is normally all in the sump started to find the new lowest point. Oil enters the rocker cover area (either ran back up from the sump, or the oil lubricating the rocker gear couldn't drain back to the sump), then it gets into the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system.

You have a PCV hose connecting the rocker cover to the intake manifold which usually feeds any blowby gasses to get burned in the engine. On the steep incline, you would have had engine oil getting into the intake manifold, and the engine started to run on this as well as the diesel being injected.

As the injection pump governs the engine by controlling the fuel quantity injected, but you were feeding extra fuel (oil) into the cylinders, the pump no longer has authority and the engine raced out of control.

You were lucky that the engine shut off when you turned off the key. In extreme cases, the engine can run on the oil and eventually grenade as it exceeds the redline... kaboom!

thanks for that hdj, im assuming that this probably wouldnt of happened if it didnt have too much oil in it, its never done it again since i corrected the oil level

My mechanic friend took a customers T/D Jackaroo out for a test drive before rebuilding the turbo and it dieseled on him. Reckons that in top gear with foot foot flat-out on the brake it was locking the front wheels and still accelerating.

You must have only had a very small amount of oil bleeding in Mark(not enough to run on) and therefore very lucky.

High and Mighty,

You say you cleaned the engine, my old 4runner had a 3.8lt Holden V6 and I always got water into the sender when I cleaned the engine, they mount on top of the oil filter flange. This always set off the light. Take off the sender give it a blast of air and see how you go, if it fixes it like mine I put some silicon sealer around the sender.

Thanks JC, I will look to see where it is. The light has turned off though so I guess you may be on about the right track ;)

while out bush i had probs with oil gauges and lights, once i got home i started chasing problems and after pricing all range of things i ended up changing the sender unit and all is well now so try the simple things first. try earthing the gauge/light to make sure its not a fault with them and then try a sender unit before spending big dollars on pumps and the like
