Hi, in round numbers reco short 4.6 ( T sleaves,Hi comp pistons) will set you back $6600 From LRA. Than add all the extras!
I have just looked into this for my 89. Dont waste your coin on used 4.6 as they are prone to sleaves coming lose and they cook. They must have T sleaves put in.($2200). Hop this helps....

Im fairly sure Bruce Davis in Sydney can re sleave a 4.6 to accept the top liner sleaves as long as the block is ok, so all is not lost on the second hand front (I think!). The 4.6 is OK as long as the engine has never been over heated. So a second hand 4.6 is OK if you find a good one. You can use the heads of a 3.9. The main issue with the 4.6 is the computer, the ECU lets the engine labour to high before changing down on hills ect, which causes the engine to over heat, that and the thermostats are to high factory, so fit a lower temp thermostat. and a rechip then the motors fine.

Most Rover ECUs must have a engine run temp of 83deg or seder puts wrong votage for normal Runing. In my experience this is one of the most commonly overlooked. Hence 20L/100 or worse!

The 4.0 is a good block. Essentially the same as the 3.9 but has the cross bolted journals for added strength.
I would start with some head work. Getting the inlet and exaust manifolds ported will be a great start. mated to a decent set of extractors will give a huge increase in power. The engine needs to breath better, and the casting process leaves heaps of un wanted material there.
Polishing the ports ill rob the engine of torque so dont polish after porting.
The 4.6 transplant may require you to put a new ECU in aswell, so it may be easier to stick with what youve got.

You can buy new 4.6's LC engines for $5600, Why rebuild???

I agree 4l is a strong block. Supercharging is still made for these by Power Dyne (CAPA - Columbus, Ohio | New Haven, Connecticut (http://www.capa.com) .au) Will set you back $7000+ if set up properly! Lets not talk about insurance!!
Makes a cam, Heads flow, Exhast & chip look good.

Yes you can re chip the ECU to suit. a 4.6 transplant will requre an ecu up grade as well. the 4.0 ltrs ECU will run a 4.6 but not efficicntly. rebuilding a 4.0 to suit requiremnts may give a better result hence why I suggested it. It may also be a cheaper option depending ont eh condition of the original block.
