Hi Guys,
I fitted a front and rear LOKKA from www.4wdsystems.com.au
I only had the front one installed at this time when I went to LCMP and this was the first time I used it.
It performed well except for one time which was a little scary.
I found that when rock crawling it worked well but where you had to get a run up that it would throw me to one side and almost into the wall and then back over to the other side putting one wheel on top of the other side and almost getting myself into a rollover.
I think the main reason this happened was because there was a bump on the right hand side and where the right hand wheel would normally slow down it was travelling at the same speed and so getting traction and throwing me to the other side.
This is the only time I have had a problem and has now made me think that an air locker in the front would be better.
The rear has now been installed and so far not a problem at all :-)

What do 4wd Systems supply with the locker, if any? I notice they are presently offering Nissan Lockers buy one get the second for half price which sounds like a pretty good deal about $1117 for both plus your compressor kit of course

They are pretty much the same as Lock-Rite and the rest of the lunch box Lockers.
They are an Auto locker so no compressor needed.
Auto lockers are always locked and un-lock when going around corners.
A lot of ppl say only air lockers and I would seriously think about getting an air locker in the front.
For the back I would be happy with an Auto Locker.

Thanks for clarifying that Tibbsy
Why didnt you get air lockers at both ends. I have herd of automatic lokkas buggering up on the road. and youll find that a lot of the times your turning in mud and rocks exceterra, so your no better of then an LSD really. Air lockers once there locked there LOCKED!

broke the pins in my lokka 3 times and broke 3 cvs because i couldnt unlock my front on certain spots where i wanted too
would never buy an auto locker again. air lockers or nothing i reckon.

Auto lockers are locked too...... unless one wheel is trying to turn faster than the other...... which means wheel spin in mud or on inclines will leave both wheels locked until such time as one wheel tries to turn quicker than the other. I've heard lots of people say that auto lockers aren't always a good idea on the road.

if one wheel lifts off the ground or loses traction wouldnt it try to spin quicker than the other, thus un locking the locker??? (clearly this doesnt happen because they work but im just wonding how the locker knows if the car is turning or one wheel has lost traction)
hope that makes sense lol
This might help

I don't know about nothing.....
I have gone plenty of places so far that I would never be able to do if I didn't have the locker installed.
As for breaking CV's I think your more at risk when you don't have a locker installed as the wheel in the air will be travelling so fast that when you get traction it's going to put so much strain on the cv it's going to pop.
Remember that the wheel in the air can only travel as fast as the one on the ground which gives you greater control.
If you put one wheel in the air you just back off the revs until the wheel hits the ground again.
I have freewheeling hubs on the front so the front locker only works when I engage them.
So many ppl talk about lockers without actually using them.

the wheel in the air should get all the power from the diff as that is the way an open centre diff is designed.
lockers break cvs because:
often 1 wheel will be hard against something and not be able to move. The locker still applies power to both wheels and your diff, axle and cvs still turn even though your tyre dosnt. When this rotation happens something has to give, just simply laws of physics. It just happens to be the cv more often than anything else because they are not as strong as the other components. This is why people with open centre diffs more often break diffs not cvs, and people with lockers break cvs.
On automatic lockers. It is my understanding that due to the cut out for the small pinion shaft the locker always stays locked when the diff is under power. When power is taken off the diff is allowed to unlock. This explans why you dont hear the clicking when you power around corners and why you do when you take corners easy.

Of course if the wheel on the ground is stuck hard it's going to snap something and the weakest link is the one going to break.
I've heard of ppl saying there cv's have broken because they have turned a corner to sharp.
My CV's are already at a crap angle due to the suspension lift.
I'd like to know how extreme I have to go to get it that stuck.
And yes under power will keep it locked.

Tibbs why do you need a run up ? Dont you fit/use lockers so you can drive slowly ? With front and rear lockers you should be able to crawl up most hills.

At the time I only had the front locker in and even if I had both ends locked I think I would still need a run up.
It was at LCMP in the Bowl.
Very very steep, and due to such dry weather most of the surface had turned to a lite powder and so not really any traction at all plus no rocks underneath to grip onto.
