Hi all, got into the offroad thing earlier this year with, dare I say it, a Honda CRV. Needless to say, at 7,000kms, we nearly destroyed its underneath in Kalbarri. It was a very expensive holiday, as my husband and two sons decided enough was enough and they would trade my aging Honda Civic in for a Troopie! Well, we started looking at troopies for $10K, moved to $20K and then $30K quite quickly. As we hit the $40K mark (for 2 year old Turbo Diesels with 200,000km on the clock), we decided to buy a new one! We took delivery last Thursday, and I'm quite surprised how comfortable it is.

Have now spend a couple of days "shopping" for the accessories. I was told that the first thing I need to change is the shocks. Is this true?? I'm also after stuff like air compressor, generators, etc. Am finding the forum a mine of information. I've enjoyed reading the posts, but will probably lurk most of the time, as my troopie is obviously not nearly tough enough!

Can anyone tell me whether I need to put a big winch on the front (highly desired by one son as a status symbol), or would a hand winch be more useful?

Also, any of you other people in WA, can you recommend a good 4WD club?? I see there are quite a few. We're booked in for the training course in September, but I can see obsession looming and we'll want to talk to like minded people.

Didn't mean to send such a long post - sorry!!

;D

Greeting's ;D

Can this be our first lady???? ???

what you buy for your troopie will all depend on the type of driving you will be doing with it.
If you have a brand new one you shouldnt have to replace the shock's unless you are going to lift it a little bit.

A winch is a great thing to have if you are going to use it.

Myself I dont yet have a winch and dont plan on one for quite awhile, I did replace the shock's and spring's but I bought my Disco 2nd hand.

For a starting shopping list try this.
Snatch strap....or two
Good recovery point's...not the barwork
Air compressor

Welcome prairie fairie
As for accessories
snach strap and recovery points are very important as Big Bagga said.
Rest of it depands on usage, but maybe all terrain tyres(i dont know if troopy comes with all terains standard)
shocks if you want a lift or if you going to carry heavy loads
many other things but it's important that you get out and find it for yourself what do you really need.
You can spand tens of thousands of dollars on accessories but if you don't need them what's the point?

hiya Prairie Fairie
I own a 98 Troopie & it's an ex telstra rig it's had a lot of gear carted around in it I suppose. It's done 95k & it still has the original shocks & springs in it & I find there not to bad still getting a good ride & it's not to bad offroad.
I found the Troopie is a lot more stable on the blacktop with a decent set of tyres I have a set of 33"x12.5x15's & they feel a lot better than the butter cutters.

To be honest I have not seen a new troopie so I cannot say how good the standard factory recovery point's are.

Some one else here will be able to tell you but.

And is good to see a lady joining in.
Do we have to watch what we say now or what? :-\

Just noticed you mentioned Kalbari.
Do you live there or just visited?

Welcome Prairie Fairie.
Good to see a lady on the 4wd Monthly Forum, & good taste, getting a Troopy.
The 78 is a good truck right out of the box.
The only things I would be worrying about first is to make sure your basic recovery gear is in order & then learn how to use it (& the 4wd).
The best way to do this is to join an affilliated 4wd Club.
They will provide you with driver training (some people here have just completed theirs recently, so no need to be embarroussed).
Once you learn what you can do, then you can look at mods, & a good start is to look at the 4bes of fellow clubbies & get ideas from there.
There is no point spending 30 grand on mods if you don't know what they do, so best to learn first & then buy what you need.

First of all, let me say that I'd hate it if you moderated your conversations - I've really enjoyed the posts, had a good laugh at some of them, particularly the ones about the missing mags!! I've just subscribed after a few months of buying, so will probably experience the same thing.

We live in Perth, so went to Kalbarri for a holiday. It was great, but our soft off-roader didn't handle the conditions at all, hence the troopie!! We're enrolled on a course, and then will start buying the necessarys. I really appreciate your words of caution, and will resist the temptation to max out my credit cards!

Thanks for the comments on the shocks - it'll be great if I don't have to replace brand new ones. We got bigger tyres fitted before we bought - the standard ones make the troopie look like a tractor!

Glad we can make you laugh ;D

If you and the family want a few other's and myself are going to get out and play in the Harvey area soon.

If you can put up with the fact that we all drive landrover's then you are most welcome to join us.
There will be a few differant level's of knowledge and experiance so you will not feel left out.

PM me if you want to join in and I will give you all the detail's

Hi Big Bugga, we would love to come and play! Problem is, we're up to our ears until the footie season ends, and then I work on occasional weekends, but other than that, if we're free, we'll be there (if you can put up with a poncy troopie!)

cheers
Sue

Sadly, we do have football on that day (roll on end of season!), but would be interested in future outings.
