Hi everyone,

Im new at this game and am keen to learn the basic stuff on proper use of gear selections and tackling mild terrain.

Im also keen to do a course to instil some of basic stuff that stays with you for life.

can anyone recommend a good course to attend. Im from Melbourne (Blackburn) by the way.

I look forward to receiving advice from this forum.

G'day billjov, you don't need text books or vancy courses, just a basic feel for ya wheels, an a healthy sence of adventure.(an a healthy bank balance when things go south) No need to be rippen it up to start with, but the best advice I can give ya, is that inertia can get ya a long way.

The reason Im wanting to do the course is to get a feel for what it can do in a control enviroment while I support around me. There's been times where I have go bush and I have choosen not to go thru certain sections of a track simply because I was chicken/ lacked confidence (no back up vehicles in case I got stuck). It not so much the theory or "text book stuff" but more the experience of pushing the car while there are instructors around to give me the basic address. I dont have the luxury of taking mates who have 4wd experience.

Hopefully, then can gain enough confidence to tackle more tricky situation when Im solo in the bush. I still think its money well spend if I go to reputable course. So what Im looking for is course where I can take my pathfinder to see how a novice like me can push it with having the full recovery gear.

If anyone has been on one of these courses that has a great outdoor course which they were happy with, please let me know.

Check out the 4wd TV site, carn't remember the name of the company, but they have been supporting the show since day 1. If you're in Melb, there's a bloke by the name of Melbourne/Werribee 4x4 training and proveing ground. Best of luck, but remember that in the world of offroad driving, there's no such thing as a 'controled environment'

Welcome mate and it's good to see you are keen to learn the right way first instead of the hard/dangerous way!

Firstly, welcome!

Something else you can do to gain a whole lot of knowledge is to join a local 4wd club. Clubs are full of very knowledgeable people who can give you some of the best advice, and will always help you along the way. You also get the chance to meet some new, like minded people.
