Hasn't been put up here yet, but ARB offer a rear step tow bar that is powdercoated in black and can be colour coded, I have got a quote for $1100 fitted, and it does away with the standard ugly low hanging plastic rear step / bumper bar, not to mention the added protection with these rear step tow bars.
I just prey the missus reverses into something before me, then I won't feel so bad when I do it......:thumb:
Cheers, Shane.

I really wish I hadn't got the factory tow bar now...
dammit. I haven't even used it yet ! 10,000 klm later *grr*
Slot, is that the ARB canopy? If so, how do you like it? Flip up windows?
Been looking at the Black Widow storage $2090 + $60 postage + $275 fitting
*gasp*
Then 2k + for the canopy.. *another gulp*
I need a 2nd job..

Yes mate it is a colour coded ARB canopy.
I chose the lift up windows primarly for access. As you would know there is not a huge amount of room in the tray, the addition of a canopy increases the carrying capacity incredibly and IMHO is a definite addition that should be on your list. Having the lift up windows means I can pack items in the tray such as my recovery bag or first aid kit, towards the front of the tray and still be able to get to it quickly without having to unpack all the other stuff.
I recently went camping and had 4 in the cab but carried all the gear for 5 people (one was in another vehicle) including 3 tents, all their sleeping gear plus the usual tarp, kitchen, table, chairs, blah blah.... There is no way I could have taken all that gear with the hard Tonneau cover on. Not only does it give me extra carrying capacity but it keeps the rain out and is secure.

ive used mine with a recovery shackle, not the ball, to yank one of my guys falcon utes out of axle deep sand all the time, he doesnt get that its not a fourby and cant carry a tonne of bricks over soft sand. and to tow a car trailer a couple of times.. truck tows over 2 tonne like theres nothing on the back.. i was so shocked.. very different to my previous vehicles
canopy would be soo useful.. but a pain in the ass for my day to day use of the vehicle.. and how do you move a fridge with it on.. hehe does it come off as easily as the hard cover?

A couple of questions if I may...
do you have a storage system under there as well?
How have you found your rear-vision effected (looking through 3 sheets of glass)
Any other observations you care to share with us who are thinking of taking the plunge?
Thanks,
J.

I was down at ARB Moorebank NSW a month or so ago and was admiring a shiny Red Planet Triton parked out in the front car park.......this wasn't yours by chance?
Seeing that ute chanced my opinion on the styling of the new Triton. I quite like the shape of it once it has been ARB'd all round.
Got a quote on a new Red Planet VR today.......hmmmmm 8-)

What is this new VR model, is it next up or just below GLXR?? Don't know much about it....

It's a GLXr minus the hard cover, roll bar and nudge bar from my understanding.

No mate, not mine, I'm in the ACT.
Just came back from my little Outback drive. Did 6,000K's in 2 weeks. Including 300+k's on those lovely corrugrations!!! The Ute was loaded up to the hilt with camping gear and it performed without a hitch. We did the tourist Uluru , Olgas and Kings Canyon - all sealed. But we also did Palm Valley, Chambers Pillar and the Old Ghan road to Finke. That put it through a bit of a test.
I now have the Simson Desert crossing on my list of must do's. I loved driving in the sand.
The ute is off to get upgraded driving lights on friday as we did a lot of driving at night ( > 1,000 K's) and my little IPF's were just not up to the task.
I heard a 115 L Fuel tank is now available and upgraded suspension.
I also heard a rumour that the Rangers in the NT are switching over to the Triton and having lots of trouble with the front end??? No details sorry, but I am wondering if they are driving the GLX rather than the GLX-R models? I understand they are upgrading the front struts and coils to adress the problem. Anybody heard any more about this???
Cheers
Mal

Hey Mal, do you have any more info on the 115L fuel tank?? Brand or supplier?

It was a dead ringer for yours....it had either Victorian or ACT number plates.
It really stood out amongst all of the boxy 4x4's in the carpark.

I have ordered a few goodies for my VR Triton and the rear step tow bar turned was the first thing to turn up on Friday afternoon.
I just fitted the RSTB this afternoon. Overall I am very happy with the design and strength of the bar. The only down side was the poor alignment of the towbar hitch pin holes. I had to cut about 7mm off the back of the 50x50mm RHS hitch to get it to line up with the holes in the tow bar AND massage the hole a bit with a drill bit to get the pin to line up and slide in.
As it is a tow bar it hangs down a little bit lower than the factory alloy step, but I think it would still offer a better departure angle than a normal tow bar hanging down under the factory step.
Fitting only required drilling of two 12mm holes in the chassis. A zinc coated bracket with captive nuts slips up inside the chassis rails each side. The whole unit is secured to the chassis with four 12mm dia. and one 10mm dia. bolt in each chassis rail.

Hi Brett - looks good.....!! I was fairly keen on one of those too, but the tow rating is 2300kg on them, whereas NZ spec Triton utes now have 2700kg tow rating, so I went with the genuine towbar in the end.
BTW - your sidesteps appear to have 'fell-off'...........much as mine are about to next weekend too. :) Trust me, they're only slightly stronger than plastic - I bent the one on my driver's side the other day, & I hardly leaned on it.......!! Have only left them on in the meantime, to save sill damage, & also because they help keep it a bit cleaner...............

I saw a GLXR in Jindabyne this morning and he had rear protection bars and a tow bar but they were higher than mine and he didn't have the plastic pos bumper/step. Couldn't spot the owner but I guess that it was the GLX extras, better departure angle than mine and at least as good as the ARB but surely not as strong.

Hi HC,
Yes took the steps off about 3 days after getting the ute. My driveway is about 600metres of dirt and the ute is always dirty. Everytime I got out of the ute I would rub my clean pants down the side of the step.... they had to go!
Besides they hang down so low!!! I think taking them off gives the impression the ute has a suspension lift. :thumb:
Now all the mud just sticks to the side of the doors and my pant legs stay clean. :D
