Hi all have an intermittent wiper problem and was hoping for some advice
The problem is that my wipers and water washers will come on of their own accord ie. the wipers will go and the water will continually pump. I cannot stop them apart from pulling the fuse.
I have replaced both the front and rear washer pumps and still have the same problem. It seems to help when I disconnect the washer pumps but does not rule out the problem. It seems (I think, can't be entirely sure) to happen more when the car/engine bay is wet.
Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated because my next step will be an auto elec and I would be quite scared of that bill!!

Might be a dicky wiper/washer switch or relay. My manual is a bit vague, but it looks like the relay could be under the steel plate behind the battery (position should be marked). I had a car once where the high beam decided come on when it felt like it one night when driving from Ulludalla to Sydney & it turned out to be a problem with the switch on the steering column. Have you tried wriggling the switch when the problem occurs?

I'm putting my money on a rubbed throuigh wire somewhere. It'll be a pain in the a$$ to find, and maybe send you around the bend. Because of that, I'd be inclined to try changing the control stalk, or maybe checking all the control wiring/connectors/contacts in the steering column first.
Good luck.
A tip is to wiggled wiring, and tap controllers and relays to see if you can simulate the fault manually.

That little area under the steel panel by the main battery can fill with all sorts of goop, and it can give you a short thru the back of the relays! Plus, where the wires run out thru the holes cut in the surrounding panels, they rub, just like TonyH says!! Both will give you the problems you are experiencing. And one other thing, often the wiring for the washer motors runs underneath the washer reservoir, and just the driving on corrogations is enough to get that bottle to drop onto the wiring and creating its own short, doing exactly the same thing to the wipers and washers!! Lift that panel, clean out all the goop, and clean out the bottom of the relays individually, giving them a good squirt of cleaner/de-watering agent/sealant and then look for shorts or rub marks in the wiring! You'll probly find the cause of all your ills!

Hey thanks all for that :D I will get onto it. I have replaced the stalk too (sorry forgot to mention that).

Yep, sounds like a rub through between two wires. They will both be positives, hence one will give feed to your wipers etc when it's not asked for. That is of course of the problem is still there after you clean out the relays as Pete mentioned.
I;ve spent days and days looking for wiring faults in aircon plant, so with that in mind I wish you good luck hehe

i had the same problem with my shorty. i got an auto electrition to look at it and he found that the main wiring loom was pinching on the chassi rail. we zipp tied it to one side and have had no more problems. we did the same as you in the begining, by pulling out the fuse. it was more of a problem after washing my engine bay. even a day after it happened.

just had a look. it's the main wiring loom on top of the steering box. it gets pinched between the body and the steering box. we zip tied it to the power steering hose. we haven't had a problem since. i also spray lanotec on all the connections around the wiper washes and head lights. hope this helps you.

Hi thanks everyone
I think that it was where patrol head said. There were some wires that had rubbed through.
It has only been a day now though so will just have to wait and see...but so far so good. :thumb:
