G'Day, I have a 82 range rover auto. At highway speeds there is a vibration but if i put it in nuetral, no vibration. Does that meen it's the motor? The motor is tired and will be replaced by my 4.6L out of my 2 door. If it's something else it needs to be fixed while the motor is out. Ths is my first 4wd auto, yet to decide if I like it. Sorry about the title

Sounds like there's some problem with your drive train if the vibes go away when you put it into neutral.

If you've checked your uni joints on your driveshafts and they are greased and flexing properly, then it's gonna be something like a crook auto gearbox. Does it vibrate in 3rd or 2nd or 1st or only on the highest gear "D"?

wouldn't the drive shaft still be turniing and therefore vibrating even in neutral...?

When at HWY speed as you said, try riding the brake and accelerating at the same time. If the vibration goes away I'd be gaving a good look at your uni's.

Also, might sound simple but, check your wheel nuts are tight, no studs are broken.

uno joints sound like they are out of balance mate-try greasing them and see what happens

Centre diff bearings are a big problem, check them and replace them if they need it (go non genuine , cheap as shit!) its hard tosay what it could be over the net but knowing rangies i'd start there.
Good Luck

yes the DS will still be turning, but it wont be under any load.

as other have said check unis first the check for play in the input/outputs of the trans case and diffs.

not necessarily, if the shafts arent under load they might not do it, i had this problem on my disco a while back, the uni on one end had seized so there was a nasty vibration under load, i couldnt work it out, after a few days the vibration went away and a rattle started, the Uni joint on the opposing end of the seized join had flogged out so it could move freely. Thanks have decided to swap body's so the vibrating one might become a buggy in the future. A bit of vibration wont be noticed crawling over rocks. Or it will fail under the stress.
