QUESTION!!!
This question is pointed at those with 'lifted' prado's.
Have any of you changed your brake proportoning valve at all? Plugged it? Linked it?
I only thought of this the other day but logic suggests (Scuse my ignorance on the topic) that if the valve now sits higher off the rod, then am I getting less braking from my rear brakes?
If so, then how do I get it back! running 33's and a big lift means I need all the brakes I can get!!
Cheers for the input fellas...... and ladies maybe?

i never touched mine.... i think it maybe have lost a little braking with the 33' but in the end the proportoning valve only adjusts the rear braking and the mojority of the braking it done by the front.... i just put new bendix 4wd brake pads all round and it will lock up on the black top!

Haven't touched mine either, but when mine was done I replaced all my lines with braided stainless ones, so I didn't lose any braking performance despite the 33's, and I have slotted (maybe cross drilled, undecided atm) rotors on my shopping list, so it's all good

ive been told sloted and cross drilled aint worth it as they get full of mud and dirt causeing them to get hot and crack

Has anyone mounted a compressor in their Prado, if so where? I have the new arb compressor and am wondering where I am going to mount it in my current model Prado. I have looked at mounting it on the left hand skirt but it would be a tight fit and alot of mucking around. I have heard the get put under the front seat alot.. Anyone else got ideas or experience??
Cheers, Kustom.
Yer Kustom ,
I have a 06 GXL same colour as yours with a fair bit of fruit on it too , I ended up putting my Blue Tongue Comp on the right hand guard under the bonnet . I have had to make Brackets for it but they came out ok . the only thing that I have found is that it is starting to crack the inner guard where the bolt goes throu. So to fix that you would need to put some strengthening plates bettween them. Also ensure that you put it back towords the fire wall so that you can fit that second battery in. The Comp came out of my 80 series and I had it under the seat for years the only benifit i had was it was easy to get at , but it was noisy . Althou the missis did like it ,also good for playing tricks on unknowing people lol.
I hope this helps.
Cheers Parksy
Heres a pic of mine.
Bits that you cannot see are; Rear air locker, Compressor , 50mm Tough dog HD lift , Outback roller drawers , half cargo barrier , 52 ltr water tank , Michelle Sacs seat covers front and rear , With more bit to come.

U shudnt hav to worry about it to much with anything under 3" lift, Cant remember off the top of my head but is the bracket mounted at one end to the panhard rod like the 4runners? if so u can make a 25-50mm bracket to bring it bak to standard.

The rotor will get really hot at the best of times but I dont believe under normal offroad and general onroad driving that it wud get hot enough to expand the trapped mud and crack it (compared to say a performance car which is going from high speeds to corners in quick intervals causing the pads to smoke), I have heard of cheaper brand ones cracking between drilled holes but sumthing decent like DBA golds or similar shud be fine. Slotted can be benefical more so on 4x4's as they clean the pads also when applied.

DBA themselves will tell you not to fit crossdrilled to a 4wd, its not just the mud its the dunking of hot discs in water and the other multitude of abuse we as 4wders put our vehicles through ;)

Yes thats true I suppose, straight slotted rotors better suited then I guess, I doubt u wud notice much difference in brake performance between slotted and cross drilled and slotted on a 4x4 anyhow. Cheers.
Not that its much needed but just for knowledge sake do use think 110 series master cylinder/calipers/rotors cud be fitted to a 95 series (or r they similar)? I know that the 95 series master cylinder is a straight swap on my 4runner and am looking into the calipers and rotors also.
unrelated I am thinking of doing a similar thing to my RS liberty in going to late model STi WRX brakes luckily its a straight bolt on virtually, looked at brembo kits also however they require 17" rims and $2500 an end but r the best as far as track performance goes, look shit hot to.

22-11-2007, 05:54 PM
I might just go slotted then. My rear rotors are rooted, so I have to get new ones anyway (my 'to do' list is getting rediculously long, lol), so I figured some performance ones wouldn't go astray, especially with the weight of a full touring setup in the making.

This is the sort of thing you'll need (obviously there are cheaper versions), pretty sure they use H3, but yeah, very easy to get yellow globes for the driving lights.
Thanks taresk, i'll look into them.

HI, just want to know if 80 series sunraysias will fit on a prado and will there be any problems or difference with the offset?
A1 Mech
01-12-2007, 01:51 PM
Standard cruiser offset in a 8" wide rim shud be -25, the stud pattern will fit fine and the wider offset shud be beneficial if ur guards will still cover the rubber.

01-12-2007, 10:21 PM
Hey jammin if you look at couple of threads back on my green prado it had 80 series 16x8 cheviots on it they do tend to stick out a little more but they fit. I couldn't go to bigger tyres because before i lifted it cause it rubbed the inner guard when full locked once i lifted it it was fine with BFG 265/7016 A/T.

U shudnt require a wider offset rim to run a 265x75, we run that sized tyre in ST-C form on out 95's standard 16x7's and it doesnt rub. It does hav a 2" king spring/bilstein lift tho.
Does anyone know if there is any decent suspension kits readily available in australia to suit the 95 series prado's say 3-4", I know they r available from overseas but havent come across any on the net so far. Has anyone here fitted a 50mm bodylift to a 95 series prado also? I remember reading about a white prado in the mag sum years ago with one fitted btu cant recall the addition. Cheers

I pissfarted around with mine for a bit after fitting the slotted rotors.
Endned up putting it back to where it was as I felt it gave the best all round result and balance.
I found mine to be finiky when adjusting with the slightest change making the rears lock up to easy.
Prados tend to dive a bit when braking hard so if you do muck around with it, be extra carfull and mark it so you can go back to where it was.
On second thoughts, leave it alone as it works just fine (mine does anyways)

Be carefull how high you go on the front of a prado i went high and had lot of trouble with cv angles.I had heavyest duty front suspention i could get i think it was 2' but mine was 4cyl petrol with alloy bar and i had fully optioned turbo desiel with winch and compressor suspention put in as mine didnt have these options it raised it considerably and had heavy duty 2' with approx 30mm spacers in the back.CV boots cracked so not knowing how long since done, I had new cv's put in and new ones cracked the boots after i think it was 4-5000km dont make the same mistake i did do your homework first cause i wish somebody had told me about angle of cv's as i didn't relise. sorry about lousy phone cam pic My brother in law had a bodylit on his 01 td but not sure details

You can do a diff drop on the Prado. It's like the one for the gen 3 4R seen here (http://www.sonoransteel.com/store_tapered_diff_drop.html) I'm led to believe.
I duno how it's go on the Prado due to being constant 4WD tho.

It lowers the height of the front diff for cars with lift kits so to reduce the severity of the cv angle so they are not running on to much of an angle otherwise cv's and or boots dont last long hope this helps Cheers Steve

the diff drop only lowers the front 2 diff housing mounts and as far as i know you can still run the factory bash plate with a few slight mods
dhula
06-12-2007, 09:46 PM
It's this dropping of the front mounts only that has me concerned about whether it is suitable for the Prado. The Prado as constant 4wd might develop failures in the front prop shaft (the one between the t/case and front diff) uj's due to the front diff and t/case being in different planes after the diff drop.
I think a discussion is somewhere around the place and I can't remember the outcome or what was said, but I'm very interested in hearing how it's going on taresks car if he has one fitted.

Guys, sorry to interrupt the "flow" of such an interesting and challenging discussion.
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a place where I could get a quote for a set of Bilsteins for my 2002 TD Prado RV. I have managed to get a set of HD Raised Lovells for the front and progressive rate HDR Kings for the rear after lots of "ebaying".

Any assistance would be welcomed.

Hi all.
Sorry to barge in on this thread but I've just signed up and I've been looking at some of the postings and there are some nice trucks on here and its good to see the Prados get a mention.
I have a 2000 GXL 3.4L with Dobinsons springs and shocks all round and a set of Cooper ST's but not much else worth mentioning. I'll post a photo when I can either figure out how to do it or they let me do it?????
Anyway just wanted to ask a bit of advice from my fello Prado owners about recommending a new clutch kit. My throw out bearing is making a hell of a racket so it's time to bite the bullet and replace the lot.
I have recently moved to the Sunshine Coast from the Gulf and Mount Isa. I currently tow a 14ft Polycraft boat that weighs about 700kg, but I have ambitions of getting a camper trailer later.... much later.
I'm looking for heavy duty (is there any other type?) so any advice on which breed of kit is good for Prados and where to get it from would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

Are there any issues with putting 35's on the 98 model prado's. Are reduction gears needed or will the bigger tyre not affect it on or off road?

to fit 35's a bodylift, extending bumpstops, and alot of body hacking is required before you even look at gears
A1 Mech

35's will also effect the way it drive considerable with standard diffs. It will be a slug off the mark and hav no low range crawling. But cruising on the highway it wud rev lower and use far less fuel. As stated u wud hav to chop heaps of guard to fit them, its hard enough to get a 33 to work well in a prados guards. But it wud look great I rekon if done well.

Well I don't know if this is relevant to the actual axle shaft diameter, but something I find useful is things like the ARB price list for parts, or another catalogue or something. It has the item code and for various vehicles which you can match up. I'll put an example.
Landcruiser Prado to 02/03 (older style ones)
ARB rear locker: Rear (RD23)
ARB front locker: Front (RD90)
Hilux/4Runner to late 1997
ARB rear locker: Rear (RD23)
ARB front locker: Front (IFS RD90) (live axle RD23)
Hilux late 1997 to 2005
ARB rear locker: Rear (RD23)
ARB front locker: Front (RD90)
So you would presume that the axles were also the same?
All this info was taken directly out of my aprist 1st 2007 ARB price list catalogue that I have here on my lap.
Luke.

Yer Im pretty sure they wud all be the same 30 spline axle and diameter. Its the strength that im mainly concerned with. A plan of mine for the future is to hav a whole prado rear axle put under the rear of my 4runner, the only problem is that I hav read of the prados having weaker axles due to the constant 4x4 and the last thing I want is to be snapping axles. The main benefit of doing this to my 4runner is for the disc brakes and tad more width. The prado master cylinder all bolts up to where the standard unit goes and has an inbuilt disc/disc bias.

Hey Grubby.
The new clutch feels great. It's very light at the pedal, which is something I was a little worried about being a heavy duty clutch, and very smooth. I got the clutch from repco so you should'nt have any worries getting one in qld.

i looked into getting 35's on my prado. you can fit them, you need a two inch body lift on top of coil and shock lift. new rims as the stockies make the tyre too close to the upper suspension arm. turning circle will be a bitch. but all in all 35's are possible. just dont drive it like a drag car.

Well i finally stepped into the world of 4b's. I have sold my 03 commodore and bought a 01 prado, GXL auto 3.4L V6. So far im pleased with wat this car has to offer as i was scared it would feel as comfortable to drive as my commodore. But after the drive back to Rocky from Brisbane I was fairly happy. Just a little dissapointed with the power but i was to expect that it wasn't goin to go as hard as the commodore. First few mods (once i pay me old man back) will be a 2" lift and 33's. Also storage unit in the back. Its a good sized car i guess for a 17 yr old and from wat ive seen very capable.
Thanks

I notice that everyone has 2 inch lifts with suspension lifts. Is that because that is all thats out there or is it not possible to go higher with a suspension Lift. I am soon to get one and are looking to get the highest, safest option. Two inches seems a little low especially with this models starting height being quite low. I do a lot of soft sand driving and so height is important.

if you go much higher then a 2in lift you have to start changing otner things than just springs and shocks... which for most people its not really worth it but but if you wanted to it can be done
A1 Mech

It is possible but It requires more modifications and dollars. If u hav airbags a 2" bodylift is out of the question so u hav to look into taller coil ova setups and dropping the front diff to keep reasonable CV angles or imported custom/bracket kits designed for later 4runners/surfs. The rear is easy to get height out of as its basic 5link coil but the IFS front is the tricky/pricy part to get performing well at a decent height. Cheers

Thanks Guys I thought it might be the case, all my previous 4wds have been leaf sprung so this coil suspension is kind of new to me. I just emailed Wa Suspensions for some quotes.
Anyway my next thing is to look at tyres and MT MTZ's are what I am looking at: would they perform a lot worse on the bitch than the ATZ's or not that much worse. The other thing is when the road gets real hot would that destroy the MTZ's or not. What kind of kms do you get out of MTZ's if you use your Prado for everything work and play.
This is great having a thread totaly discussing Prados.
I have a 99 snowy with a 50mm lift. I trying to find out where I can get a rear adjustable panard rod from. The 50 mm lift is pulling the diff to the right on an angle. Its stuffing the r/h rear outer of tyre and l/h inner of tyre. Im from Victoria. Theres on big problem on where its sourced from.

Anyone no of a site where you can actually see the price of MT tyres.
Ta Steve
I've got an adjustable one, you need it with any decent lift, otherwise the rear axle ends up way out of wack, even a 50mm lift will put it about 20mm out.
3rds Productions made mine, took a while but mine was their first Prado bar, so now they have the dimensions, should be quick to make, and they should have a RRP for it too by now.
Baby Troupe, have people started mistaking yours for a 70 series Troopy yet?
This is great having a Prado thread. I've got a 99 Snowy .50mm lift running Tough Dog shock and springs.Arb Bullbar and lightforce 240 spotties.
I need to know if any one else does a rear adjustable panard rod. The lift is kicking the rear diff to the left and to the rear. So the l/h/r tyre is wearing on the outer and the r/h/r is wearing on the inner.

I havnt had mine for long but my 1st shallow water crossing there was water in the passenger side.(Not a great deal but wet the carpet floor)
It seemed to be coming from just in front of the passenger seat .
I lifted the carpet out to dry and found like an oval shaped hole, so have sealed that one up.
Just wondered if there was anymore i should be looking out for before i venture out again?
Cheers Guys.

I am running MTZ on the Hilux and STTs on the Prado as they werent quite as aggressive as the MTZ both are great tyres the STTs are quieter but have not been given a hard time in the bush yet, if it was my Prado and not the wifes I would have gone MTZs again in a heartbeat.

there are a few there but not a lot you can do about it. ive had four inches of water in mine when i didnt check ground hardness of the sand. it mainly came in up under the door and in through the interior door trim. it took me two days to clean out the 4b.

Steve
i do alot of river sand driving and havent been stopped yet. bigger tyres and lower pressures is how i go about it. its not that much lower than a 80 series diff when lifted.

nothing special yet but need a lift and tyres which are coming early in the new year just clocked over 50000 ks so tyres will need replacing soon and what a shame that means a lift to fit them on.

I'm looking at putting 17" alloys on the camper trailer to match the prads (for extra spares e.t.c). Anyone know where u can get some at a reasonable price (unlike $500 per original rim from a wrecker) or any other rims that look similar.

Kustom,
I have the brand new ARB compressor mounted under my 07 TD for the lockers and for tyre inflation. ARB installed it and placed it in the engine bay on the passengers side against the firewall. Fits perfect and inflates tyres like you wouldn't believe.

Heres a pic of mine.
Bits that you cannot see are; Rear air locker, Compressor , 50mm Tough dog HD lift , Outback roller drawers , half cargo barrier , 52 ltr water tank , Michelle Sacs seat covers front and rear , With more bit to come.

Hey guys, was looking at getting a D40 Navara, but i have decided that i want a 03' upwards Prado GXL, i need to find out if anyone has a 4.0L Petrol on Gas, how many litres the gas tank is, and how many km's you get from the tank, what the total range of the prado is still with petrol/gas used together on a long trip etc.
As there is not much purchase price difference between petrol and t/diesel it is hard to decide which way to go, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Upgraded from the V6 petrol to my new D4D this year and have never looked back. The V6 is a very capable and punchy motor, however, compared to the diesels - the V6 has a drinking problem.
I had the 6spd manual in the V6 and now the 6spd manual in the D4D. Around city driving, I have dropped about 8l/100km and on the highway I have dropped about 7l/100km. From my last tank of diesel I got just under 1700km and refueled with 170ltrs. So around 10l/100km from that tank - this was a combination of about 70% highway and 30% city driving. I have heard of guys getting close to 2000km from the diesel's standard.
I use to use around 170ltrs for 1000km around the city if I was really lucky and soft on the loud peddle. Anywhere around 18l/100kms was the usual.
My advice would be to go a diesel. Hope this helps, cheers.

yammysj I've got a 2006 Turbo Diesel GXL, had it since new. It has a massive 180L fuel tank (2 x 90) and it works out about 10L/100km which is pretty bloody good considering the weight of the vehicle. I only have to find a service station every 1,300km or so!
I have spoken to other Prado owners, and other 4WDers. The petrol is of course more responsive but much thirstier. My drama with gas is....if you wanna do a big trip out west or up north....can you get gas? Diesel is everywhere, and it is economical and with 180L in your tank your range is enormous.
That's about as technical as I get mate. I love my Prado. Will never drive anythiing else again!
For more info check out Pradopoint.com (no au on the end).

The wifes 03 is getting between 1100-1300kms from the 180L tank. I actually think I could better it as she has a bit of a lead foot. I wouldnt bother with the Gas for long highway trips.

More of an info thing not really a question. THought some might find it interesting.
I've just returned from a month trip to QLD towing a Goldstream wind up camper. .All up the combo weighed in at just a smidge over 4 t (4012 to be exact) when we left. I'm guessing as we went on things got lighter then heavyer and so on but I digress.
We had a roof rack fitted as well so were a little higher than normal.
Travelling at 90 kph with no a/c = 17 l per 100 km
Travelling at 90 kph with a/c = 18 l per 100 kph. not much difference considering it was on all day.
No the good bits.
Travelling at 95 kph with a/c on = 15.3 l per 100 kph (work that out) This was from Lithgow through sydney (the tunnel and bridge as I've never driven on it before)
Travelling at 100 kph with the a/c on = 16 l per 100 kph. This was on the Hume freeway so no to hard but some hills
I thought it interesting to note the difference in fuel economy and the fact that driving fast made it better.
Either that or my maths sux big ones.
The way I work it out is
fuel used/kms travelled then x by 100 gives litres per 100 kms
Interesting huh

Nothing too outrageous at all, just followed the marked tracks through the National Park.
Yar right though, travelling in convoy with other people - everyone on UHF - was a lot of fun. Travelling home by ourselves the kids and I remarked how "boring" it was travelling by ourselves.

Its an increase in one size so while technically illegal as is a 31" on a Hilux most will run the risk and never have a problem of any sort with it ;)

Hi all.
Sorry if this has been asked a million times. I've just purchased some bilstein shockies for my 99 rv6 and was wondering which springs to use. I'm keen on lovells or kings +40 - 50mm but was wondering whether to go heavy duty or not. The car is only running an alloy bar at this stage and not many other accessories presently. A steel bar is on the shopping list and when on trips things like fridges etc will be onboard. I guess the question is are heavy duty springs unbearable in a unladen fourby.
Thanks for your help.

heavy duty springs give a tight ride when unloaded... i have heavy duty raised kings in the front and stock 80series fronts in the rear. it has a good height loaded and unloaded. at the moment i only have a second battery over the front, i think when the bar and winch go in ill put coilovers in the front!

Ive just picked up an 02 Prado with 3.4 auto. It has Peddars springs and shocks which seem pretty high at the back, but sagged out at the front. I will be looking for replacements to get 2-3" lift up front.

Big day today. I ordered 2x air lockers with compressor, winch, tow bar, Safari snorkel, Airaid inlet tube and spacer, wildcat extractors, looking into Uni chip.
Next question, lifting the front. I can either get bigger springs which most people are doing, but then what about the Rancho Quicklift front struts from 4wd1? They are adjustable for compression damping, but also adjustable for ride height, giving up to an extra 45mm with the standard springs. Has anyone used these?

Maxtrax unboggers
Side steps and side bars going to bull bar
Rancho 2"+Quicklift struts with adjustable damping.(Rear is already raised)
Safari snorkel
Sandgrabba mats all round inside
Icom 400 Pro UHF
Wildcat exhaust
Airaid throttle spacer and inlet tube
Heavy duty towbar
Bought a K&N filter but took it back as it is half the size of standard filters
Next week I get a wheel alignment, front and rear airlockers and ARB compressor. Week after that will be a unichip. Its getting well setup now.

Hi Stevo,
Mate I looked into this very thing when I first bought mine and came up with a few interesting facts.
No1. Mr Toyota only sells them in pairs if you want new ones, my memory is a bit vague but cost about a $1500 each !
No2. You can get them rebuilt to "new" specs or better by a specialist seat repairer/maker ! I only know of one crowd in WA that does this as a full trade and so I went to see them... cost about $1000 each and I get better (more cumfy and supportive) seats than I originally had and you can't tell cause they use the same fabric as the old seat !!
No3. You can go buy a set of Recaro's (best quality aftermarket seats IMO) fitted to your rig for about $2000 each (average for adjustable ones) which includes fitting and seat mount for your vehicle. There are cheaper ones out there both in Recaro and other brands so it is up to you !
No4. Go to a Wrecker and buy a front set the same as you existing model which are in good nick... if they exist. Cost... dunno ! There were none for my 120 at the time but they figured around the $700 - $1500 mark for the 2 depending on condition.
What did I do........ Nothing I couldnt afford any of them at the time
Hope this helps...................... :thumb:

$2000 each for recaro's??? u serious. Its a bloody moulded foam/cloth seat with a bit of modified angle holding it to the original mounts. Ther r plenty of very comfortable (adjustable or non) bucket seats out ther for less then a $1000 a pair. A seat is a seat, If u like the feel of any vehicles seat and it physically fits into wher it needs to go in ur vehicle its rails can modified to mount ther. Go hav a browse at an import wrecker, various subaru, toyota and nissan seats r very comfortable. I've got a set of 04 wrx Sti buckets lined up for $550 pair perfect condition, they r awesome. Just gota decide which car to put them in now.

The wildcat exhaust comes with extractors and goes back halfway down the car, deleting the first resonator. I got the airaid stuff from USA, cant say that it will make huge amounts of difference, not as much as extractors and chip.
I will post some photos soon.

I couldnt find this anywhere else on the forum and thought it may come in handy.
I recently had the timimg belt replaced on my 2001 TD and the mechanic said he didnt reset the light as he ran out of time & to bring it back, also mentioned he needed to remove the dash to reset the indicator.
I found this after a bit of research and it does work on a Prado. Took a couple of minutes to do and is a lot quicker than removing the dash :)
Timing Belt Warning Indicator Reset Procedure
For LandCruiser UZJ100, HZJ105 and HDJ100
________________________________________
1. T-BELT MODE DISPLAY
a) With ignition turned ON, using the trip switch (select/reset button) change the display to ODO, and turn the ignition OFF
b) While pressing the trip switch, turn the ignition switch ON and hold it for 5 seconds.
c) Release the trip switch, then press the switch again within 5 seconds.
d) The digital display should change to T-belt mode. The initial display "15" (0,000km) is displayed (ie. 150,000km).
2. REWRITING REPLACEMENT VALUES
While in the T-Belt mode, each press of the trip switch will change the displayed value by 10,000km increments. Once " 20 " (200,000km) is reached the display reverts back to " 1 " (10,000km) again. Remember, this setting is the number of kilometres to be travelled before the light comes on next, and once reset this counter will start from zero.
I believe the timing belt interval for all the 100 series engine variants is 150,000km, but this should be checked against each different markets servicing recommendation. This being the case, you shouldn't need to change from the default setting of "15".
Obviously for the US, the ODO is in miles, and I guess the T-Belt warning would be set in 10,000 mile intervals.
3. T-BELT WARNING RESET COMPLETION
a) After setting the replacement setting value, hold the trip switch ON for more than 5 seconds then release the switch.
b) Check that the display has now changed back to ODO and that the warning light has gone off when the engine is started.
NOTE: If the T-Belt mode is completed, even though the belt replacement has not been performed, the T-Belt warning IS reset.

Just a question
My 3.4 v6 was starting on saturday then dieing again. There seemed to be a click from a relay then it just stopped pumping fuel. I checked all fluids and it all seemed fine, even bypassed imoberliser but did nothing. Was wondering if it was maybe a faulty sensor or something cutting off the fuel.
Any thoughts or ideas would be great

Hi,
I have a 2000 TD RV Prado and I have bought a cargo barrier off ebay. Its a Milford, does anyone have photos or could take photos of where you fit this too or does it have pre drilled fitment points.
I have just fitted a ride pro suspension plus polyairs and Cooper St's. Couldn't be happier.
Thanks in advance

I'll see if i can find my fitting instructions and post up.
You will need to drill holes in the roof and just below the rear windows,
Did you get the fitting kit with the barrier, if not you will need one.

Will look at getting the pump rebuilt as i have run out of fuel on the sub tank a few times and this has worn the pump out, vehicle has done 130,000k's from new. Yeh I can understand why people want the diesels but given the cost of purchase, service and then the dearer fuel for me it wasnt worth it. The wife gets around 13L/100k from ours around town so I am happy with that.

Hi guys, I have just traded the wifes 05 Mitsubishi Outlander in on a real 4x4 and bought a 2002 Prado GXL. Most of our driving will be done on the beach, so my questions is "If you had $1000 to spend on improvements for the car, what would you spend it on" I was thinking lift kit, snorkel? My neighbour just converted his 2000 Prado to gas and install Lovells 30mm lift to rear. WA suspensions did the lift and it only cost $250, thats using the existing shockies though. Look forward to your comments.
PS I am happy with the stereo.

snorkle your looking around $500 you would probley get away with using standed struts in the front if there still in good working order. try and get a set of shocks for the rear that have a little longer travel then the factory ones. and 4 new coils. if your lucky and look around a little maybe $600-$700 could do a lift!

Petrol i would say snorkel and a K&N air filter.

Thanks Turbopradie, it's a petrol. Not sure on the snorkel. Think I might look at lift kit to the rear first as it will be packed to the roof when we go camping. The tent alone weighs 45kg. Does anyone know what the standard height is from the ground to the bottom of the wheel arch. The car has done 110,000 k's so I would be interested to see how much the rear has dropped.

Spoke to the guys at Wa suspensions, they quoted $690 for 4 Lovell coils 50mm lift, using the standard shocks. They said there would be no problem using the existing shocks? Not really into rock hopping, more the beach, sand tracks and dunes. Mate recommeded I get it done. He nearly ruined a rear mudflap and flare, they cost nearly $ 1000 to replace! so anything that stops the sidesteps or mudflaps hitting the ground could save you money in the end.

I would say that it has as most prado's sit down after the 100,000k's on factory suspension.Try and measure the diameter of the coils that would give you a fair idea as the factory coils are only 18 or 19mm in dia. Are you in Perth Mike? would be good to catch up if you are.

Factory coils are about 15mm, Heavy Duty aftermarket are ones up around the 18mm mark. Stock off memory, you'd be looking at around the 740mm point from bottom of rim to bottom of guard on a GXL

No sub tank had less than 1/4 left. Had the Lovells installed today. Looks great. Now has 825mm back and 810mm at the front. They had to put spacers on the LH side to compensate for the lean. Not sure what the probelms was as the exisiting coils were the same height when they took them out. It has hit something fairly hard in the RH front, and they pointed out the repair work. this may have had something to do with the lean to the left, but it drives straight and sits good now. Although it sits higher, there seems to be less body roll. I also used the existing standard shocks.

With such a difference in height side to side and the evidence of a hard hit on one side indicates a possible bent chassis. I'd go get it checked out and straightened if possible if it is the problem. It's a far better solution to the lean then spacers in the suspension.

Should be ok, it's only lifted 40mm (high side) although it look higher than that. I think the bull bar has compensated for around 10 mm height. Reading throught this thread, most I the Prado's Iv'e seen have a 50mm lift kit.

Mike
Most prados are lifted 50 mm above standard height. As Trojon said, standard height is abut 740mm from rim to guard.
Yours seams to have been lifted 40 mm above your already lifted springs (770 B4 and 810 now at the front)
If you do the sums using Trojans measurments then yours has gone up 70 mm give or take.
IMO way too much for the CV's and boots to handle in the long term
As an example I only just measured mine 2 mins ago and the front is 775mm rear is 800mm (both measured rim to guard). I have HD ridepro in the front and HD Pedders with polyairs in the back.
I don't want to go any higher than that due to CV angles
If your game leave em for a bit to see if they drop (settle) down a bit, but IMHO change em for slightly lower ones to protect your CV joints and boots.
EDIT: Just checked my OME fit card from ages ago and standard height of mine pre OME springs was 745 front and 755 rear
mike1100
31-03-2008, 12:29 AM
I dont know??? the left hand side seemed to be standard height, and the right hand side was high. They put spacers in the left to compensate for the lean, hence the extra height. Did not think about CV's. The guys at WA suspensions said they seemed to be the original coils???

U shud be alrite as far as boots go as long as ther is a decent gap between the folds of the boot, if they r only a few mill apart or constantly touching then they will wear thru eventually (U cud always drop the diff?). It isnt really a problem to hav a little less height on the passenger side as it will compensate for when ther is only one occupant in the vehicle and the right mounted spare tyre, but if u suspect a bent chassis I wud be gettin it checked out. Cheers

Of late my '99 Prado RV6 has developed a whining sound that appears to be coming for the power steering pump.. i think. It increases slightly when turning wheel. I'm confused as to what it might be...
I originally thought it was low fluid levels so i topped it up and it helped slightly then came back. It does seem to be going through a bit of fluid but i can't find any leaks. Anyone have any ideas?

Could be the steering rack leaking. Mine had a leak and it was not dropping fluid anywhere noticable. What it was doing though was leaking from the rack end and filling the rubber boot, which eventually filled and dumped fluid everywhere.
If this is the case, you're either looking at a new rack, rebuilt, exchange or 2nd hand. Obviously a new one is very expensive and in my searches a 2nd hand one from the wreckers was about the same price as to have it rebuilt which is the better option. Exchange is a little more but a good option if you don't want to be off the road for a few days.
Also for power steering, Toyotas recommendation is Dexron III AT/PS fluid.

Hi Chris,
tyres are just 265/75/R16 BFG A/T's at the moment. I will be going upto 285's when they wear out (6-12mths) either MTZ's or STT's. The BFG's arent noisely at all compared to some off road tyres.

Nice Prado weasel
Thanks Boof
I've also ben busy lateley, I've fitted a cargo barrier, a Safari Snorkel even though they don't make one for the 2.7ltr so I modded a V6 snorkel to fit, I've fitted reverse lights and I've also fitted dual batteries with two power sockets in the rear!!!
What's the story with reversing lights. Are there any limitations legally on size/wattage e.t.c. Is the norm to wire them off your existing reversing lights through a seperate switch or have them seperate so you can use them when your stationary (camping e.t.c.)?
Cheers.

Mine is run through a relay using reverse as the switch, I could have run it through a 3 way switch but all I wanted was a basic reverse light, I don't need a work or camp light as I have a twin tube cold cathode light in the car at all times!! As far as I know they are legal as long as the are run off reverse and that they aren't over 55watt, mine are VZ Crewman fogg lights so they spread sideways and not in people's eyes!!!:thumb:
Thanks for the comments Madcore I'll keep a look out for your truck around town or pop in to Opposite Lock and say hello, I'll be out the back running the workshop!!:thumb:

Hey dazzler mine is an RV4 2.7 petty and it absolutely goes anywhere!!! I just got back from a weekend club trip at P7 offroad at Childers and it was very wet and sloppy and that wouldn't stop it!! They have a great low range ratio even after I've fitted 17's!!! One downside is that they only have the 90ltr rear tank but the fact that they are good on juice helps there, they have ample power offroad but can get a little sluggish on the hyway when you hit the hills. There are plenty of aftermarket goodies you can get but they don't make a snorkel for them but you can modify a V6 one like I did!! They flex really well with a full ToughDog kit with no rear sway bar too, here are some pics of mine in the wombat hose on the weekend and it didn't lift a wheel the whole way!!

Fellas,
This afternoon whilst driving my prad I noticed by brake warning light, air flow/filter light and battery charge warning light all came on simultaneously when braking. When accelerating again the lights went off then back on again under brakes. This went on a few times this afternoon.
Driving my car again tonight the 3 lights came on and stayed on regardless of braking or accelerating. I assumed it might be just a lose wire somewhere so I kept driving, with full lights stereo etc. When I arrived home and turned the car off to unlock and open the gate... Flat battery. :( Pushed it into the garage where she is now. I've had a surface look including fuses and can't find anything out of place.
My prado is 1999 RV 3.4L V6 model.
What you all reckon?.. anyone have any ideas?

Anyone help?
I recently bought a 2000 Model GXL Prado 3.0 Turbo Diesel, and I have to say it's bloody awesome! Already have got plans for it and a huge trip.
But, I have a query about fuel consumption?
I bought the oil burner for all the usual reason, but feel like I ain't getting enough Km's from each tank.
It's got a SD180 Dtronic Computer Chip, a free flow mufflers system, and has been serviced regularly, if this has any effect?
I don't thrash it at all, I'm not carrying a load.
Can anyone tell me what they get from the same engine?? Litre's Per/100kms etc.
I will be sure to get some pics up soon..
any help would be great.

Hi Fellow Prado Owners !
If anyone is interested I am putting together a Toyota Prado owner's convoy along the Bridle track, from Bathurst to the historic goldmining town of Hill End from Friday the 5th September through to Sunday the 7th September 08.
I know a good camping spot (no facilities) halfway along the Bridal Track, known as the Root Hot River crossing. If you are interested, and would like to come for 1 or 2 nights, or even just track us down for a day-trip please message me, or check out the Trip Section at Toyota Prado Owners Community : pradopoint.com : Index (http://www.pradopoint.com) (no au)
regards
Bender.

Hi Frippy,
I have a 2001 TD Prado with a DP chip & Beaudesert exhaust fitted + 265/75 FC11's (ST's before them) and have averaged about 11.5 lt / 100 km over the last 160,000 km.
Normal running, I run the 2nd to 500km then switch to the main tank and fill up at around 1200 km. I dont drive for economy but I dont thrash it either.
The worst economy I have got is 13.8 lt on a trip to the snow with 4 people & 4 snowboards on the roof. Aerodynamics seem to effect the economy more the weight, as my economy dosent change much when we are loaded for a big trip. Last big trip was to the Flinders and averaged about 12.5 lt over 2 weeks driving.
Hope this helps.
Frippy

Thanks Bender,
I'm half way through working out some figures. If they don't come close to yours I guess I will have to sort something out.
Any ideas what I could try if my figures are much higher than yours?

Reply to 'frippy's' question :
2002 diesel.. getting under 9l/100 k's on highway cycle..
Secret weapon... controversial... but 3 hi-clones seem to be doing the job at keeping my fuel expenses lower.. snorkel has improved it by about 9-10%... was getting consistent 10l/100k's..

That is correct if you lift a vehicle the lift would push the axle to the right hence pushing the right rear wheel outside. I'm looking for one too. I reckon you can find it on certain 4WD shops that do custom fab or try Google

HI, just want to know if 80 series sunraysias will fit on a prado and will there be any problems or difference with the offset?
Yeah they fit, and you can safely go up to -25 offset the tyres would still sit flush under the guards, that is if you have a GXL or flares installed. King wheels, Speedy and ROH they all make steel wheels with minus offset

Hey have any of use guys thought about SAS'in ur 95's. I was thinking about it the other day while looking at the oldgirls prado and it would be no different to SAS'in a KZN185 surf or gen 3 4runner as they and the 95's share the same chassis. You could sell ur R150f/transfer and buy one from a surf/4runner so the transfer is on the drivers side and use a widened lux axle up front. Wouldn't be that dear also if the TG front leaf kit can be used. My 92 4runners having the front and rear TG kits installed at the moment and it is turning out cheaper then I expected. Just a topic for conversation. Cheers

I dont really think so, on par in orice with sum of the more advanced IFS kits and far more capable. I got away with the 3" front and rear kits and longfield 30 spline axle set+ chromo hub gears for $3950. Thats alot of gear for that price. Ud also be able to change to parttime 4x4 at the same time which is good.

i think if i was going to do an SAS i would use coils and maybe do a custom 5link or somthing..... but really i cant justify the cost.... to me it just aint worth it!!!

08-09-2008, 08:09 AM
also i think superior make an adjustable panhard rod
A1 Mech
08-09-2008, 04:35 PM
I was gona use coils but decided against it in the end, a coil SAS is more expensive, far more mucking around and u get roughly the same wheel travel as the TG leaf kits in the end. A 5link up front is a bad idea as far as on road handling and simplicity go, ther aint much room for 4 control arms and a panhard to move around. Leafs are simple, work well and handle fine onroad. U wudnt consider it unless u planned on mainly using ur prado offroad as a bit of a toy tho as the IFS is no doubt better on the black top. Just threw it out ther as a possible alternative to the more expensive IFS kits gettin around.

i think you would want to be doin some pritty hard core stuff... i take my prado pritty much any where unless there is a large risk of damage! the only real thing i hate about the IFS is when a front wheel drops into a dip the whole car follows. in planing on trying some softer coils in the front to maybe lessen the dipping a little by allowing the suspension to move a little more freely!

ok i just put in the lift in the prado... before the centre of hubs to guards measurements were 520/525mm front and 525/530 rear. after puttin in the new coils in the front it came to 600mm :| and 570 in the rear... so fixed them up and now the front and rears are sittin bout 580mm.. gotta get a wheel alignment as it drives like a pig. will post up some pics soon.

Soft coils wont make a difference in that reguard, That is a problem that All IFS has. The front can only travel as far as the bumpstops allow, To get any decent articulation out of the IFS u have to replace the control arms with longer custom units and long travel CV's as well as dropping the diff to straighten CV's a bit and removing the swaybar. locktup sell sum items for the 95 prado which may be if interest to use.

3rds productions will make an adjustable panhard rod (they made mine)
As for the dipping, removal of the swaybar will stop that, because it effectively makes the front fully independant, being the only link from one side to the other, you can get used to the extra body roll (I had mine off for 6 months), but quick-disconnects are the go.
