When Alan’s wife picked up a new (for her) LandCruiser 100 Series GXL, he couldn’t believe his luck.
Originally meant to be a replacement for their 1HZ-powered ’98 model, Mrs Alan (not wanting him to put big wheels and suspension on it) told Al he may as well keep the old girl and “do whatever you want with it”.
I’ll say, if any wives of 4WD Action readers have come across this article, I’m sure you could learn a thing or two from this girl.
Alan’s family are no strangers to the 4WDing lifestyle. Before the ’Cruisers, Al used to get around in a pretty serious HiLux Dual Cab. Enough lift to fit 33in muddies, 2.8L turbo diesel, and that’s not to mention the front and rear lockers.
However, try as it might, that HiLux has nothing on his new truck.
Because the ’Cruiser unfortunately stayed pretty standard for a few years before Al was able to get stuck into it, he had plenty of time to think about what he wanted. It definitely shows as well.
Unlike a lot of projects that are built up over a long period of time, just adding things as finances become available, everything on Al’s truck was picked for its performance and compatibility with the other products fitted.
The result, as you will see, is a real head turner.
With the ’Cruiser now finished, Al and his family of five kids have been able to find a whole lot more time to get out and enjoy some great camping and 4WDing spots.
They are now regulars up at Stockton Beach, towing their Central Coast Canvas camper trailer, Jenolan Caves and also love going on 4WD and hunting trips up to his uncle’s property.
Hey, with a truck as good as Al’s and a wife as understanding, I reckon he’s going to be the envy of quite a few of us 4WDers.
Inside
With five kids taking up all available space in the back of the ’Cruiser, Al has kept the interior alterations to a minimum.
The ’Cruisers have built part of their reputation on being spacious and comfortable anyway.
Up front, the only addition is the Uniden 40-channel UHF. An ARB turbo timer prevents any turbo-related shutdown issues.
In the back, with only limited space left, Alan made up his own drawer and fridge slide. On top of the slide sits a Waeco 110L fridge/freezer.
The drawer also allowed him to create a handy alcove to keep things like his compressor, snatch strap and other 4WDing paraphernalia.
A couple of 12V power outlets have been installed to power lights and chargers from the back of the vehicle.
