State Government Closes Sandy Cape 4WD Tracks
Tasmanian State Environment Minister Brian Wrightman has decided to close more than 15 4WD tracks in the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area on the Tasmanian West Coast.
A report released early this year outlined to the State Government the need to close 22 4WD and motorbike tracks in the area due to the need to conserve the cultural aspects of the area. After consideration, this number was reduced to around 15.
Minister Wrightman has accepted the request from Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service in a report that states the decision comes as a balance between natural and cultural values.
The report states:
“Many of the tracks have been used for stock management, shack access, mining and mineral exploration, or fire management. Other parts of the track network have been unofficially developed to make new routes to access more beaches, campsites and fishing spots
“Environmental damage caused by off-road vehicle use affects the ability of animal species to survive, by affecting their habitat through changes such as altered run-off, sedimentation and pollution.”
Former leader of the Tasmanian State Government Tony Fletcher told the Mercury, the decision to close these tracks by the State Government showed, “Wanton [needless] disregard for more than a century’s worth of camping, fishing and recreational culture”.
Sources say much the 4WD access will be restricted south of Sandy Cape to Pieman heads.
At this stage, changes will likely come into effect on July 1st, 2012.
4WD Action has visited the Tasmanian west coast and Sandy Cape on a number of occasions. If the tracks remain closed, this could possibly put an end to any future visits and DVDs.
