Packing for a Trip – Interview with 4WD Action Cameramen
As some of you might know by now, we’re about to head off to film another DVD out on the tracks.
Before they left, we caught up with the two 4WD Action cameramen that you’ll recognise from a lot of our 4WD Action Facebook posts: Gavin Rawlings and Shawn Peach.
Between the two of them, they’ve driven every track of the Victorian High Country and cruised the open plains of the Kimberley.
So we pulled up a stump to ask them how they go about preparing for an epic DVD trip.
You’re both about to head off this afternoon on a DVD shoot, what are you expecting from this trip?
Gavin: A lot of rain!
Shawn: We tend to expect the worst these days. We've been in so many nasty situations on past trips, the best thing we can do is just be prepared for it all and tackle it as it comes.
As cameramen, both of you must carry a hell of a lot of gear for the 4WD Action DVD trip. How much do you end up taking for a shoot?
Gavin: I try to keep my camera kit simple and basic. Just what I need.
Shawn: While Gav keeps it simple, I have to carry everything he forgot. But these include spares and backups so storing it soon becomes a problem. Nothing a few hard cases can't fix! Then there is camping gear on top of that only leaving enough room for a driver and a passenger.
Quite often you’ll take the work Troopy and maybe the 100 Series. With all that gear you carry, is there any method behind your madness about how you pack the 4WD?
Gavin: We have a drawer system in the 100 Series that fits pelican cases, laptops and other bits and pieces nicely. As for packing the Troopy, that scares me...
Shawn: The 100 Series was easy, it has a cargo barrier and drawer system and we have pretty much nailed the packing system. The Troopy is a whole different beast. It mostly carries our camping gear and food. The intention is to stack nicely and make it all accessible, but after day one you can forget trying to find anything in there.
From all your DVD trips over the years, what’s the strangest thing you’ve seen?
Gavin: An incident with Steve Robson and a thong in the Cape that will never make the DVD. Trips with Graham are strange because he can make it rain anywhere! He's cursed and I think he needs to see someone about it. I don't know anybody else that can bring rain to a desert...
Shawn: I can’t really think of anything at the moment, but there is literally a laugh a minute when you’re out in the bush with Roothy or Graham.
Have you got any questions for the camera crew?
