NSW Floods Dampen Spirit
The recent floods in North West NSW have certainly taken their toll in the visitor numbers over the past two weeks, but as the skies clear the opportunity to head out on a 4WD adventure is looking good.
The unseasonal cooler weather for this time of the year is making planning for a trip out west quite attractive.
But after the recent floods, it’s hard to gauge if it’s worth taking the risk.
We got in touch with Moree Farmer Jason Hunt who told us after being cut off from the town for 10 days; things are finally starting to settle down.
"About 20kms south of here [Thalaba Creek], at its peak it was 0.4 metres above record levels’ said Jason.
Jason’s farm lost 10 head of cattle and one of the levee banks broke flooding one of the houses on the property.
"In terms of 4WDriving, whilst rain is still occurring in significant amounts, the water has receded and access should be increasing. However, the flood has done considerable damage to many tracks, and I've heard of 4WDs getting bogged on roads and tracks with severe washouts" Jason explained.
We spoke to NPWS Ranger Jessica Stokes of Mt Kaputar National Park just near Narrabri who told us,
“Like everywhere in the northwest of the state Mt Kaputar National Park has been affected by wet weather and flooding.
“Flood damage has forced us to implement closures in some areas but we will be working quickly as soon as conditions enable us to repair damaged areas and restore access.
“Waa Gorge is closed due to ongoing wet conditions delaying repair work.
“Sawn Rocks’ scheduled walking track maintenance closure is likely to be in place until Easter.
“Dawsons Spring, Bark Hut and other attractions on the Kaputar Plateau remain open.
“Travellers should also bear in mind that it is still difficult to travel west of Narrabri due to flood waters. Narrabri, Gwydir, Moree and Walgett Shire Councils have road closure information on their websites” said Jessica.
Before you head out on any trip check both the weather conditions and any SES warnings to come through about the area you’re travelling in.
