Interview: 4WD Action Photographer Anthony Warry
4WD Action Magazines are known for great photography.
Jam-packed with everything from amazing customs to epic travel destinations with breathtaking scenery, the in-house photographers are rarely in the office. But we managed to find time in the busy schedule of Senior 4WD Action Photographer Anthony Warry, to have a yarn and see how he got into this line of business.
4WD Action: So Anthony, how did you get into the photography business in the first place?
Anthony: Well my grandfather was originally a photographer, when he sadly passed away in the mid-90s I inherited all his photography gear and that’s what really kicked it all off.
4WD Action: Photography is usually a pretty tough gig to get into, what was your first paid job?
Anthony: Before 4WDing I was actually really into surfing. I went off on a surf trip with a few mates and sent a few shots into Tracks Magazine. When I got home I found out they’d given me the cover and a double-page spread. From there I went on trips with blokes like Mick Fanning, Kobe Aberton and Owen Wright.
4WD Action: Not bad for your first gig. How long have you been working for 4WD Action now?
Anthony: About three years now. I remember the first trip I went on was up the Cape with Roothy, I rocked up to work for the first time on the Monday and Glenn Wright asked me what I was doing on Wednesday, naturally I asked him where he wanted me to go and he said “Cape York”. In an instant I said count me in, and that’s how it all got started.
4WD Action: Ha. Straight out of the gate you head on an epic trip with Roothy to the Cape. By now you and Roothy go way back, what was it like when you first met him?
Anthony: He is by the nicest, funniest, charismatic and wisest man, I have ever met.
4WD Action: Too right. So in your opinion, what’s the best photo shoot you’ve been on?
Anthony: As great as the Cape trip with Roothy was, it would have to be the Kimberley back in May 2010 with Graham.
4WD Action: Yeah that was an amazing trip, but what are you hanging out for now? What’s the one shoot you’re keen to get your hands on?
Anthony: To be honest I wouldn’t mind having a go at the Supercharged Range Rover for Overlander 4WD Magazine, but otherwise I’m really keen to head back up to WA around the Kimberley or Ningaloo.
