4WD Action Visits Fraser Island

A lot of 4WDers get the idea that at Christmas time, Fraser Island is a write off, thanks to all the tourists that head up that way.

Our very own Production Editor Aaron Rankin went up there over the Christmas and New Year period.

“To be honest the island isn’t that crowded at this time of year. Sure there are plenty of people on the island, but thanks to the sheer size of Fraser there is plenty of room for everyone. A lot of the smaller inland camping grounds were totally empty!” Aaron said.

As we all know, Mother Nature rules this world and as usual there has been a fair amount of change over the past year since we last travelled in the area.
“The first few days we planned on staying up the very northern end of the island,” Aaron said.

“After crossing the rocks successfully the day before, we returned the next day to head south for a look around when we discovered that overnight the big surf and tide had completely washed the track away.”

When you travel to Fraser, make sure you take into account fuel usage. While you can get fuel from numerous spots on the island, the price currently is around the $2.10 per litre for both diesel and petrol.

Fraser Island is certainly an area of Australia that everyone should see at least once in their life. Just make sure you plan well, have a well-maintained and serviced 4WD and most of all have a fantastic time!

From your own experience, what’s your best advice for those travelling to Fraser?
